Artist Joe Black, who created the two-metre-tall piece, said: ‘This portrait was created to celebrate David Bowie being named the most influential artist of the last 50 years. ‘David Bowie coming in at number one was the cherry on top of a brilliant judging process, and it was great to be a part of it.’ ‘The judges took so much time and care with their scoring to ensure the Top 50, Top 20 and Top 10 lists were truly the best of the best in terms of influence, and the final list are artists that are so deserving of their places. The judging panel, led by broadcaster and DJ Lauren Laverne, were challenged by TV channel Sky Arts to create the list and crowned Bowie for his ability to transcend a variety of mediums. David Bowie has been named Britain’s most influential artist of the last 50 years for his ability to transcend music, film and fashion, with a unique piece of art commissioned to celebrate the news. The Starman musician topped the Sky Arts list of 50 influential artists ahead of 12 Years A Slave Oscar-winning filmmaker Sir Steve McQueen and It’s A Sin writer Russell T Davies, who revived Doctor Who in 2005.

For David Bowie everything had value. TV broadcasts, overheard conversations, cartoons: all of them could be used as source material.

In 1939, the illustrator decided to introduce a new plot device which would allow him to expand his choice of storylines. Bowie also makes reference to a second cartoon. The same was true of cartoons, two of which David Bowie makes reference to in his manic post-modernist collage ‘Life On Mars’. In this way, the Hunky Dory track is itself cartoonish. Bowie offers us a warped but undeniably recognisable reflection of the world we inhabit. They are then free to reconfigure this jumble of isolated phrases and words, juxtaposing disassociated ideas to create powerful new images.

The Ziggy Stardust musician was given the #1 slot due to his aptitude for multiple mediums: music, film and fashion.
