Australia outclass England to reach Commonwealth Games netball ... (The Guardian)

Defending champions England lost their Commonwealth Games semi-final against Australia, who were inspired by star shooter Gretel Bueta.

With Australia renowned for their ability to retain possession and England finding no tangible answer to Bueta, who shot 43 from 44, Thirlby’s side were unable to locate the turnover ball they needed to mount a comeback. I think she got too much hand on ball and her getting herself back into the circle exposed us. She’s brilliant and versatile coming out of the circle. Thirlby rolled the dice and made changes, but the nightmare only continued for England. The onslaught of defending pressure applied by the Diamonds turned the Roses’ attack end into treacle. They seized the game from start and never relinquished their grip, leaving England to now tackle New Zealand for bronze on Sunday. The disruption favoured Australia who found another gear, picking off an England ball and delivering it to the star shooter Gretel Bueta with relative ease.

Watch video of the moment England goal defence Layla Guscoth ... (7NEWS.com.au)

England's Layla Guscoth forced the most bizarre stoppage you'll ever see after destroying a goal post in last night's semi-final.

The Australians took command midway through the first quarter and never released their vice-like grip. It was a surgical triumph, built on the brilliance and fluidity of the Diamonds’ movement as they repeated their Quad Series final demolition of England in London in January. The game started extremely physically, but nothing would compare to one of the players crashing into and breaking a goal post in the first quarter.

Commonwealth Games: England title defence ended by Australian ... (Sky Sports)

England's Commonwealth Games title defence has been ended by the Australian Diamonds in the semi-final after a 60-51 defeat at the NEC Arena.

The Diamonds gained the first turnover of the quarter though. Australia will go for gold against Jamaica. The unit had just over six minutes to make an impact. They opened the gap out to 10 goals in the third set of 15 minutes before withstanding England's gutsy fourth-quarter comeback. While the post was replaced, both teams had a chance to reflect on the early moments. However, the Diamonds avenged that result in style.

Diamonds avoid historic loss to knock out England in spiteful semi final (Fox Sports)

The Australian Diamonds have won a spiteful semi final against England, 60-51 to keep their gold medal dream alive. After the Roses triumphed with a shock ...

The crowd was silenced when Harten couldn’t pull in a long ball and Australia regathered. There was some confusion from England as Malcolm came to the bench. The Roses opted for Jo Harten at GS, with Helen Housby and Nat Metcalf leading the attack. Housby returned to the action at GA with Cardwell pushed back to shooter and Harten benched as the Roses looked to capitalise on a Wood miss. Gretel Bueta at goal shooter with Steph Wood and Liz Watson out in front. Like the final quarter of the loss to Jamaica, Australia’s attack end stalled early in the final term as down the other end Bruce was cautioned for her physical attack. Clarke had a wing defender bib on but needed to go to centre as Francis-Bayman returned to the court as GD. But an offensive contact call on Liz Watson gave the Roses the chance to get one back as Bruce put her body on the line to keep Australia in possession. Jo Weston got a tip from behind Harten to create another turnover for the Aussies and Wood was able to convert from long range. A held ball against Harten gave Australia another opportunity in the second term as Wood pushed the margin to eight. The impact was so forceful, the post shifted and the game had to be stopped so a replacement could be brought out. Ellie Cardwell tried to drag England back into the match with her 22 goals, as her physical battle with Courtney Bruce threatened to boil over with elbows thrown.

Guscoth, who plays in goal defence, was unharmed during the incident, though England did lose the match 60-51. “Losing is meant to hurt,” said England’s head coach, Jess Thirlby after the game. The Birmingham-born star was a member of the England squad that won bronze at the Netball World Cup in 2019 but missed the majority of the tournament through injury. Others compared the incident to footballer Phil Babb’s infamous collision with the goal post during Liverpool’s match against Chelsea in 1998. Defeat to New Zealand costs England Commonwealth netball bronze (The Guardian)

England's netball team will leave Birmingham empty handed after a 55-48 defeat against New Zealand in a bruising Commonwealth Games bronze-medal match.

“I believe 100% we are capable of taking the teams in the top four. If the shortcoming in England’s defeat against Australia was an inability to turn over ball, then it clearly had not been addressed in their hunt for bronze. The second quarter was the only quarter of a margin that most probably killed us. But it did little to change the scoreline; New Zealand entered the break five goals up. New Zealand’s grip on the centre court tightened in the second quarter. New Zealand’s 6ft 3in Kelly Jury wrapped herself around the Roses shooter Eleanor Cardwell while Geva Mentor tried to blunt Nweke. The deadlock was broken by the Ferns, reaping the reward for their zonal pressure to edge 14-13 ahead.
