We thought it was a great opportunity to go and contribute and help them win a medal, and so we don’t regret the decision. The key for him is to get back and get into footy, and then we will see where things lie, late in the year. It is great having him back because he provides another option and provides more depth in the spot.” Will Skelton would be an obvious call-up, given he has been dominant in French and European rugby this year, but there isn’t a long list of other candidates. “Will [Skelton] is an option,” Rennie said. Rory who is now in Japan.”

Fresh Cooper injury sours courageous Wallabies win in Mendoza (The Sydney Morning Herald)

The Wallabies came from behind to beat Michael Cheika's Pumas but a serious calf injury to Quade Cooper marred the win.

The Pumas led 13-3 but they got back into the game with a bold decision to turn down easy points in the 16th minute. The game still had plenty of twists to come, though. Leading by 27-26 in the 70th minute, the Wallabies boldly went to the corner again and Folau Fainga’a did what he does so often in Canberra and pounced over. McReight burst through the middle to finally jag his first Test five-pointer. Another chance went begging soon after when James Slipper couldn’t hold a Cooper offload near the line. “We’ve got more in us, but I’m really happy with the character,” he said.

Wallabies overcome gritty Argentina but lose Quade Cooper to injury (The Guardian)

The Wallabies scrapped to a 41-26 Rugby Championship victory over Argentina but it has come at a cost, losing Quade Cooper to a leg injury.

Cooper’s replacement Reece Hodge then banged over a long-range penalty while Argentina lock Matias Alemanno was yellow-carded, for the Wallabies to take the lead, 27-26, for the first time in the match. The Wallabies lost another of their most experienced players when playmaker Cooper slipped on the turf while in attack seven minutes into the second half.

Five things we learnt from Wallabies v Argentina (Rugby.com.au)

There was real character to this 41-26 win by the Wallabies in Mendoza to launch the eToro Rugby Championship.

Halfback Nic White’s telegraphed first ruckbase clearance was charged down in the opening minute. Instead, the Wallabies showed excellent poise with a 31-point second half. It was a huge moment. The Test was opening up at that stage so it was extra disappointment not having the veteran No.10 there. Cooper was putting on some footwork when the Achilles gave way. Reece Hodge did really well for more than 30 minutes as a fill-in flyhalf. Cooper ripping the ball back from Pablo Matera shortly after was an excellent comeback. Holloway picked up the pass clean at bootlace level. When pressured, his backhand flick pass in front of his posts only turned a tricky situation into something worse. Cooper’s presence at flyhalf was positive overall while he was on. Like Hooper, he was everywhere as an openside flanker and has a wide range of skills. It wasn’t because everything was precise.
