Nothing Phone (1) Australia review: Tough competition for the Pixel ... (7NEWS.com.au)

A new smartphone brand has made a lot of noise in the tech world, but is it really ready for the prime-time? We find out.

Nothing Phone 1 is an impressive first release, and it will be exciting to see what comes next for this new brand. While the clarity is good, they don’t have a lot of bass. There are two colour profiles that can selected to suit your tastes, and these can be further tweaked with a colour temperature slider in the settings. Overall, it’s a practical choice, rather than something that has top-tier specs - and that could be part of the appeal for Nothing Phone 1. It has a mechanical whirring sound rather than a simple silent vibration, and this could be a turn-off for most people. The 50MP ultrawide (Samsung JN1) tends to be a little soft when pixel peeping. The LEDs can also be activated to provide an almost ring lighting effect for photos and video. These run around two camera lenses, the wireless charging coil and towards the USB-C charging port - which creatively doubles as a battery indicator. White may be the better option if this is something that would trouble you. Therefore, if you love trying out the latest gadgets and want something a little different - Phone 1 is right up your alley. Phone 1 is certainly a tech enthusiast’s product. The company has already released its own wireless earbuds called Ear 1 with a very striking see-through design language.

Nothing Phone 1 review: an Android with funky lights on its ... (The Guardian)

Novel design, good cameras, solid performance and battery life make a competitively priced package.

Four years of promised software updates is good but not the best, and relies on Nothing succeeding in fulfilling its commitment, which is not guaranteed for any new entrant. The glyphs can be lit up to create a fill light at night instead of using the flash, which is novel but produces a blue hue to the images. Its design is distinctive on the back and simple elsewhere. It is good to see something different and fun, though. The company plans to publish an environmental impact report for the phone, which it says has a carbon footprint of 58.5Kg CO2 equivalent. The main camera produces the best images that have generally good colour balance and detail. That’s decent but a year short of that offered by Google and Samsung’s competing devices, and well behind Fairphone and Apple’s six- to seven-year support. Setting up the phone without restoring my data fixed the problems. Different light patterns show who is calling, which app is notifying you or even different types of notification from the same app without having to see the screen. Nothing rates the battery for at least 800 full charge cycles while maintaining at least 80% of its original capacity. Only those mid-range phones with top-spec chips such as Apple’s iPhone SE or Google’s Pixel 6a will perform markedly better for the price. The recycled aluminium sides and flat OLED screen look remarkably similar to an Apple phone, leading more than one person to ask if I was holding an iPhone 13.

But, for what it is right now, the Nothing Phone (1) is a no-nonsense, upper-tier smartphone that does its job well. Stereo speakers are a must nowadays and the Phone (1) has them — a bottom-firing driver and an earpiece that doubles as the second speaker. But, for what it is right now, the Nothing Phone (1) is a no-nonsense, upper-tier smartphone that does its job well. The Nothing Phone (1) holds a 4,500 mAh battery to keep the lights (all 900 of them) on. So, if you want to veer away from that beaten path, break that Samsung - Apple mould, then the Nothing Phone (1) is a good choice. Stereo speakers are a must nowadays and the Phone (1) has them — a bottom-firing driver and an earpiece that doubles as the second speaker. At the time of writing this review, the Nothing Phone (1) runs on Nothing OS 1.1.2, which is based on Android 12. Most of the photos taken with the Nothing Phone (1) look pretty good! For day-to-day activities, the Nothing Phone (1) is pretty snappy and responsive. But what is the Nothing Phone (1) right now? But the Nothing Phone (1) also nails a feel that is pretty nice – it’s light and well balanced, yet reassuringly solid. Nothing Phone (1) Review: It Is Worth the Hype! (MySmartPrice Gear)

On paper, yes, the Nothing Phone (1) has very mediocre specifications – a dated Qualcomm Snapdragon 788G+ SoC, dual 50-megapixel cameras, a funky naked rear ...

Speaking of videos, the phone can click up to 4K at 60fps, but HDR videos can only be shot at 1080p at 30fps. Nevertheless, they can be unnerving when trying to do important things in a hurry, like paying the cashier using the phone at a busy superstore. We have used the phone for about three weeks, and so far, it has received two major updates in this duration. The Glyph interface, along with the new ringtones, was very exciting, and it even prompted us to change our habit of using phones on vibrate. But the haptics are top-notch, good enough to compete with the iPhones. The vibrations can be felt precisely on your fingertips and aren’t buried somewhere in the frame of the phone. There were several concerns surrounding the dust and water resistance of the Phone (1). Yes, it does have an IP53 rating, but it’s not waterproof. Holding the Phone (1) in your hand for the first time is an experience that will stay with you for a long time, no matter how many smartphones you have seen. The right has the power button, the left has two individual volume buttons, and the top is nearly clean with a single mic hole. The Phone (1) is a smartphone that was so hyped at its launch that it became cool to hate it. The naked, lit-up design of the Nothing Phone (1) has been the talk of the town for months. And having fought both for so long here’s our review to make it clear if it’s the right choice for you. But then, at Rs. 32,999, it falls in the same performance-centric line-up of smartphones from Redmi, Poco and iQOO.

Nothing Phone 1 vs Apple iPhone 13: The newest Android takes on ... (XDA Developers)

We compare the newest Android phone in town, the Nothing phone 1 to the most mainstream iPhone in the iPhone 13.

The iPhone 13 has a more capable processor (if you do intensive tasks), iOS is surrounded by a better app and hardware ecosystem, but on the other hand, the Nothing Phone 1 has a better screen and endurance. In my opinion, the iPhone 13 is a slightly more capable phone, but I think the Nothing Phone 1 is a better value. From my personal use, the Nothing Phone 1 can last about 14 hours on a single charge, while the iPhone 13 can go about 12 to 13 hours. In fact, the faster refresh rate of the Nothing Phone 1’s screen makes the phone feel faster than the iPhone 13. iOS is obviously well optimized for the iPhone 13, but the Nothing OS that runs in the Nothing Phone is quite smooth too. (Note: the photo below is of the Nothing Phone 1 with an iPhone 13 Pro Max, not the standard iPhone 13 — but it gives you a good idea since the iPhone 13 is just a smaller version of the Pro Max). Importantly, the Nothing Phone 1 display refreshes up to 120Hz, while the iPhone 13 is just a 60Hz panel. The iPhone’s main system is a pair of 12MP cameras, while the Nothing Phone 1 packs a 50MP main camera along with an 8MP ultra-wide. That is to say, they’re both fine during the day but shoot at night and you see major image detail dropoff in both phones, more so on the Nothing Phone 1. The phone only ships with Google’s suite of apps (though in my opinion, there are far too many of them) and just two Nothing apps: a camera app and a recorder app. With a 6.5-inch OLED screen, the Nothing Phone 1 is a bit larger than the iPhone 13 (it is, in fact, closer to the iPhone 13 Pro Max in size), but the rough in-hand feel is very similar. The Nothing Phone 1 features an attention-grabbing transparent back panel revealing some flashy light strips, but it also has an overall shape that’s very similar to the iPhone 13 series.
