All the other four women remaining missed at the height meaning Kennedy was guaranteed gold on countback even if she didn’t clear a new height. Here she cleared the same height and won gold. She cleared a low height then at 4.35m ran through the mat twice and retired injured. The weather started to conspire against her with a cool wind blowing up gusty and strong. The conditions were super tricky but I got the gold and I thought why not? She was shattered.

The Gold Coast 2018 bronze medallist has enjoyed a golden return at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Nina Kennedy has restored Australian supremacy ...

Young Australian Ky Robinson took full advantage of the cracking pace set by rising Ugandan star Jacob Kiplimo and the Kenyan contingent to make a real mark in a red-hot 10,000m final at the Commonwealth Games. After narrowly missing medals at both the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth and then the Tokyo Olympics, the big man of Australian athletics has his sights set on a Birmingham medal. The Athletics Australia star has progressed to the 800m final where he is attempting to become the first Australian man to win the 800m since Peter Bourke at the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games breaking a 40-year drought. The first Australian to win a medal in the 2022 Games at Alexander Stadium was para-athletics sprinter Rhiannon Clarke who was third in the women’s T37/38 final won by Olivia Breen from Wales in 12.83. To the delight of the crowd, Kennedy defied tricky windy conditions to then have three unsuccessful cracks at what would have been a new Commonwealth record of 4.76m. The Gold Coast 2018 bronze medallist has enjoyed a golden return at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games: Nina Kennedy's 'remarkable' journey from ... (The West Australian)

The transformation of Nina Kennedy from broken pole vaulter to Commonwealth champion was a painstaking process.

“I don’t think the World Champs have really sunk in yet, but this Commonwealth gold has. Her performance was all the more remarkable coming as it did after a disastrous 12th place at the Olympics last year. But there was some light amid the gloom when she became the Australian women’s pole vault record-holder by jumping 4.82m at last year’s Sydney Track Classic. Kennedy celebrated her win on the landing mat with a clap of her hands — one completely blackened by the friction tape on her pole — a punch of her fist to the sky and a few blown kisses to her fans. They combined to turn Kennedy into a more professional athlete — more purposeful in her training, more trust in her strength, more diligent in her goal-setting, better understanding of performance in balance with her everyday life and more belief in her capabilities at the elite level. “This time last year I was at the bottom of my whole career, so to come third in the whole world and first in the Commonwealth is incredible,” the 25-year-old said.
