"They've showed what a good team they are and new winners in both men's and women's (with Australia to play Fiji). The focus will then immediately switch to the final leg of the World Series, where Australia are just two points behind South Africa and able to pip them for a maiden title. Philip Wokorach scored brilliantly, kicking and regathering so close to the line. Actually, if we can stick with Uganda and South Africa for a second, there are a few examples of crossover here. And the score that squared things up was exceptional entertainment. Played at whiplash speed, there were big collisions, superb tries and, dare we say, some of the errors in decision-making that makes a game tense. Here, it was a tight, special showdown, befitting their rivalry. So we pulled together several highlights from the event.

Having the Ballymore redevelopment in Brisbane completed next year with a new National Rugby Training Centre is ideal timing. Superstar Caslick is an unbackable favourite to be World Rugby's Women's Sevens Player of the Year for a second time and a third Olympics beckons for her in Paris in 2024. The Aussie women have been a revelation this season with master coach Tim Walsh back in charge. Did the team cling to some of the 2016 heroes too long? The efforts of Charlotte Caslick, Ellia Green, Emilee Cherry, Sharni Williams, Emma Tonegato and Co stirred a revolution in 2016 by making rugby sevens Australia’s growing women’s sport. The ponytail express opted out of an equally bright future with the Gold Coast Suns in AFLW to pursue the world stage that is the differentiating appeal of sevens.

'They weren't going to lose': Australia write their perfect rugby ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Australia's women's sevens side has atoned for Commonwealth Games heartbreak four years ago by beating Fiji 22-12 in the gold medal match in Birmingham.

“Now that I’m in this role I’d love to inspire the younger generation because I think it’s such a great sport. They’re the best team in the world.” “Mum had a bottle of champagne ready at 6am in the morning … so I’m sure she’ll be on it all day celebrating,” Levi said. “We framed it as the girls were a bunch of journalists just trying to promote a bit of a story,” said coach Tim Walsh, no doubt thrilled with the progress of the women’s program in the 12 months since he has returned. “You look at Australian women’s sport right now, there’s so much competition for different sports now,” Williams said. “Like the whole weekend, our team had chances.

Aussie redemption is oh so sweet (NEWS.com.au)

Australia have wrapped up the Commonwealth Rugby Sevens gold medal in a 22-12 win over Fiji in a dominant display.

After a semi-final loss to South Africa earlier in the day, the Aussies fell 26-12 to New Zealand in the bronze medal match to miss the podium. And it was more redemption after Australia was bundled out of the Tokyo Olympics in a 19-0 quarterfinal thrashing by Fiji. It had been the one medal Australia had been missing, having won in Rio in 2016, and coming into the tournament as the reigning Rugby Sevens women’s world champions after winning four of the six tournaments in the 2021-22 World Series.

So as a coach it's a good sign for the future." "Now that I'm in this role, I'd love to inspire the younger generation. "Emilee Cherry is the assistant coach and she knows exactly how I operate and the vision for the future, so she's a winner. We've achieved a Commonwealth Games medal, not many people can do that in their lives, let alone have their sister side by side." "When I first started, I aspired to be like Charlotte Caslick and the likes of Ellia Green," she said. "But by winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, or going to the Olympics, that's what's enticing players to come and play rugby."

Four years ago the women's team suffered Commonwealth Games heartbreak on the Gold Coast; in Birmingham they atoned spectacularly.

“Mum had a bottle of champagne ready at 6am,” she said. “You look at Australian women’s sport right now, there’s so much competition for different sports,” she said. The men’s team settled for fourth place, losing 26-12 to New Zealand in the bronze-medal game. “I don’t know if I can say [what they said] on camera; they were definitely happy.
