Tania Choudhury will also feature at the same time in the Women's Singles Sectional Play Round 1 event. Cricket makes only its second appearance at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with women's event featuring for the first time. However, India faces a setback this year as Shooting -- where India boasted of multiple medal contenders at the Games -- has not been included in the final roster. The match is scheduled at 2 PM IST. Six hours later, they will take on Fiji in their second group game. India had finished a dismal 9th in the Women's Hockey World Cup earlier this month, winning only 1 match in six. India are currently ranked fourth in the all-time medal tally at the Commonwealth Games, but they are unlikely to make a climb anytime soon.

Ace boxer Shiva Thapa outclassed Pakistan’s Suleman Baloch in the first round of the 63.5kg category while India expectedly made mincemeat of Pakistan in a lop-sided 5-0 win in the mixed team badminton event. The Indian women’s hockey team was also off to a winning start but it was far from impressive in a 5-0 victory over Ghana in its Pool A game. The men’s team first beat Barbados before thrashing Singapore while the women’s side prevailed over South Africa and Fiji.

All that stated, they have a number of match-winners in their ranks, and perhaps even one individual brilliance could prove to be enough on a given day. A powerful, free-flowing strokemaker, Deandra Dottin had struck a 38-ball hundred against South Africa at the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2010 - still the fastest ever in Women T20Is. She was still into her teens then, and has continued to evolve as an international cricketer over more than a decade. She was West Indies’ standout batter at the World Cup earlier this year, and led the run-scoring charts in both - Women's Super50 Cup as well as the Twenty20 Blaze at home recently, offering plenty of promise ahead of the campaign.

Aussies survive big scare in Comm Games opener (cricket.com.au)

A commanding innings from Ash Gardner dragged Australia over the line at Edgbaston as cricket returned to the Commonwealth Games.

Healy’s catch saw her become the first ‘keeper to complete 100 T20I dismissals, but the celebrations were short-lived when she missed a leg-side stumping chance to remove Verma, removing the bails with the ball in her other glove. But express quick Darcie Brown ensured the damage was limited, etching her place in the history books as the first Commonwealth Games T20 wicket taker when she had the dangerous left-hander caught behind slashing at a wider delivery, out for 24. She put on 33 off her next 15 to reach a half-century off just 34 balls, putting Australia in sight of victory before King sealed victory with a four on the final ball of the 19th over.

England became the first country to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in the Artistic Gymnastics Men’s Team event, ending with 254.5 points to top the podium. Kaur’s 34-ball 52 was instrumental in taking India to a respectable 154 for eight before Ashleigh Gardner eclipsed the captain’s brilliance. Earlier in the day, India had blanked Barbados 3-0 in the Men’s Team event with Sharath winning his single’s fixture in straight sets. Ace Indian paddler Sharath Kamal pulled off a remarkable comeback during India’s men’s team match against Singapore. After leading 1-0, the Indian trailed 3-9 in the second game to Pang Yew En Koen. Kamal then won eight straight points to take the game 11-9. Thakur ended with four for 18 from her four overs but the spinners leaked runs as Australia rode on Ashleigh Gardner’s fifty to clinch a three-wicket win in the first-ever Women’s Cricket match at the Commonwealth Games. Yee’s timing for the swim was 8:49 while he completed the cycling course in 26:07s. For the running course, Yee clocked 14:31s.
