Swimmers dominant as Australia get off to golden start at ... (The Guardian)

Superb in the swimming pool and tremendous on the track, Australia is in a dominant position on the medal table after a superb opening day in Birmingham.

The quartet initially set a Games record of 4:14.605 when qualifying fastest and lowered the time to 4:12.234 when far too good for New Zealand in the final. Australia’s world-beating cricketers were stretched to the brink by India in the first ever women’s match held at a Commonwealth Games but ultimately prevailed by three wickets. Tokyo gold medallist Zac Stubblety-Cook also has a Commonwealth Games gold medal to add to his trophy cabinet after winning the 200m breaststroke in Friday’s penultimate final. At the Lee Valley VeloPark, Jess Gallagher and her pilot Caitlin Ward combined to win the nation’s first gold medal in Birmingham in the women’s tandem B Para-track event. Titmus, a dual-gold medallist in Tokyo, drew on all her star power to hold off compatriot Mollie O’Callaghan in the 200m freestyle. The nation also filled 11 of the 21 podium spots in a dominant display, though Canadian teenage sensation Summer McIntosh was the standout swimmer when producing an incredible display to win the 400m individual medley by nearly eight seconds.

Australia tops Commonwealth Games' medal tally with eight gold ... (SBS)

Matthew Hauser claimed Australia's first medal of the Games when he won bronze in the men's sprint triathlon, with Para-track cycling duo of Jess Gallagher ...

Silver medalists from England, gold medalists from Australia and bronze medalists from New Zealand during a medal ceremony for the Men's Team Sprint Gold Final at the Commonwealth Games track cycling. The big shock came with the men's pursuiters, as the Australians had won gold or silver at every edition since the event was added to the Games program in 1974. "Definitely the start of a new era," beamed Baker, the elder stateswoman at 27 next to Edwards (22), Moran and Plouffe (23), predicting that "definitely, we could be world record breakers." Already the only Australian to win a medal at the summer and winter Paralympics, she added: "To think I can have an impact on others, inspire them to chase their dreams - whatever part of life - that's an honour for me, very humbling." The trio set a new Commonwealth Games record of 42.042 seconds, after also setting a new mark of 42.222 in the qualifying ride. She's hungry. Still, though, amid the flag-waving, there was a sense of frustration about the end of an era as Australia's flagship men's pursuit foursome failed to make the final at the Games for the first time ever. She's feisty. It came after the remarkable Paralympian Jess Gallagher and her sighted pilot Caitlin Ward kicked off the gold-digging at the scene of the 2012 Olympics by earning Australia's very first gold of the Games in the tandem blind and visually impaired sprint. "She's what I was like - and I am still like that - but it's exciting to have a bit of a battle out there." The silvers went to Sam Short (men's 400m freestyle), Mollie O'Callaghan (women's 200m freestyle) and Emily Beecroft (women's 100m freestyle S9). And Australia's 4x100m mixed freestyle relay team - Emma McKeon, Mollie O'Callaghan, Kyle Chalmers and William Yang - won gold in the last event of the night.

This is part of a much longer saga, one that involves considerable bullying and denigration of the work I’ve done over the years. There could be a huge swathe of media releases and updates issued to showcase the efforts of our athletes… The great shame, however, is that cycling – and cycling fans – will only get the official party line. The re-branded organisation is essentially still in its infancy, but many of the nasty old habits of what had been a rank management by Cycling Australia remain. This is traditionally when I go into overdrive in front of the computer, posting stories and interviews, highlighting how and why this is such an important event in Australian cycling history. Medals have been won and fast times set in racing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, but you won’t see any coverage of the event on RIDE Media this year.
