Hunter Moore became despised by women as he used his website to profit off revenge porn and hacked photos. Here's where he is now ahead of Netflix doc.

When the women went to the LA police they were dismissed, with claims asking why the photos even existed. It was finished while he was in prison, ready for publication on his release. But to Moore and his readership, the "fun" came from those who weren't complicit in their information being shared. It’s been noted that Moore no longer has a social-media presence, however there are several sites that claim to be him, including a Twitter page. According to the Communications Decency Act of 1996, website owners are absolved of what’s posted by their users (it's what protects Twitter and Facebook from a billion defamation suits). In some cases, according to the documentary, there were people who were paraplegic and blind, aged up to 70 years old or were disabled. Things then took an even more sinister turn when more women made claims they had never sent anyone the photos that were suddenly appearing on the site. In turn, the friend started sharing photos back, and soon they were both collecting a cache of explicit photographs on the website. From there, other people started to hear about it, and the site started to grow. Moore started embracing internet fandom, publicly declaring himself the owner of the site, which at its height attracted more than 350,000 visitors a day. This would include phone numbers, social-media pages and locations of their homes and jobs. In the foreword, he explains he wrote most of the book while it was happening in real time, through to his conviction and beyond.

Netflix's Most Hated Man On The Internet: How we caught Hunter ... (Metro)

Hunter Moore, the creator of revenge porn site IsAnyoneUp.com, is the subject of Netflix documentary: The Most Hated Man on the Internet.

Moore was determined to return more debauched than ever, announcing he was starting a new website that had the same premise as IsAnyoneUp.com, but with an added ‘map’ feature, so fans could turn up at the homes of those with nudes on the website. ‘As I researched the site, I could tell some of the girls were underage and Moore needed to take some of the content down,’ James says. In the UK, cases of revenge porn are thought to have risen by 41% between 2020 and 2021 alone. But both James, and Charlotte, found themselves another powerful ally in the guise of Anonymous – the ‘chaotic good’ internet vigilante group comprised of highly-skilled hackers, who also wanted to bring Moore to justice. Moore accepted a plea deal for charges of hacking and identity theft in 2015, and received 30 months jail time, as well as being banned from Facebook. Since his release, Moore has kept a low profile, saying he wants a ‘peaceful life’ after serving time behind bars. ‘I went to his site and within 10 seconds on being IsAnyoneUp.com, I just knew I really f***ing hated the guy. Moore was now receiving thousands of submissions a day: teachers, nurses, elderly women – even a paraplegic’s nudes were leaked on the site, all with their contact details attached. He often replied to cease and desist letters with ‘LOL.’ In another instance, Moore responded to one request about removing photos with a picture of his own penis. Moore’s internet infamy saw his antics covered in the media, seeing him land somewhat fawning interviews with high-profile magazines such as Rolling Stone and Vice, which had more than just a touch of admiration for his outlandish behaviour. Now, everyone is going to be made aware of Moore, and the website’s grimy history in Netflix’s new documentary, The Most Hated Man On The Internet. Another devotee wrote: ‘If you had AIDS, I’d still f**k you just to say I have AIDS and that I got AIDS from you.’ IsAnyoneUp.com emerged from the primordial ooze of the primitive days of social media in 2011, with 20-something party prowler Hunter Moore having initially bought the domain for club promotion.

McGibney then redirected the site to his anti-bullying resource BullyVille.com. As a condition of the sale, McGibney asked Moore to write a letter apologizing to victims, in which Moore stated he "might do some writing on bullyville.com to help people who have been bullied," as he's "been on both sides of the fence. Charles Evens, the hacker Moore paid to break into email accounts, was sentenced to 25 months. Former Marine James McGibney says in the docuseries that he offered Moore less than $12,000 to acquire Is Anyone Up? in April 2012. "There's no way I'm just going to abandon all of these women that I said I was gonna help," she says. "At the end of the day, I do not want anybody to hurt themselves. In February 2015, Moore pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information for purposes of private financial gain, and one count of aggravated identity theft. He accused McGibney on Twitter of being a pedophile. She also exhibited her grit as a determined celebrity chaser who shared her secrets in the 1988 book "Meet the Stars" (written under the name Missy Laws). His reaction, as relayed to Rolling Stone: “Oh my God, this is gonna be the best post ever.” When photos of Charlotte Laws' daughter appeared on Moore's website, she began to suspect Moore was relying on hacking for content. The more traffic I’d have that day, I’m going to get paid for.”

The show tells the story of Hunter Moore, a Sacramento native who set up a revenge porn website.

Moore, from California, started the project when he was trying to send nude pictures of a woman to his friend. At this time revenge porn laws had not been created, and he even mocked the cease and desist letters that were sent to him. Netflix says: “Hunter Moore was the most hated man on the internet – that is, until his online presence saw its day of reckoning. This meant if someone, such as a potential employer, Googled that woman then this could come up. He wrote most of it while the events were still happening and finished it in prison. The self-proclaimed “professional life ruiner” is the subject of the new documentary, and the story is as troubling as it is vindicating.

Moore was sentenced to time behind bars — followed by three years of supervised release — but has completed his sentence.

“I’m still contacted by women every day and I expect that number to rise when the Netflix show is broadcast,” she told the Daily Mail. “I’m just a mum who defended her daughter, but I will make it my mission to defend anyone’s daughter.” And while Moore initially agreed to take part in the docuseries, he subsequently backed out. A little over a year later, Moore entered into a plea deal, under which he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine. He was also required to notify of his probation officer of “every computer, computer-related device, screen name, password, e-mail account or ISP” he used or created during his three years of supervised release, according to his plea deal (which VICE shared in 2015). The site launched in 2010, and was only live for about two years, but had an outsize impact — both for its victims, and its founder. The site didn’t require that those featured in the images had consented to sharing them; often, the images were submitted by the subjects’ exes, who had received the pictures in confidence — hence why the the site became famous as a destination for revenge porn.

New Netflix docuseries 'The Most Hated Man on the Internet' follows Hunter Moore, the self-described "king of revenge porn.

Upon gaining access, he redirected the site to his own, called BullyVille.com, and posted a public letter to Moore explaining why he took down the ultimate bully. In January 2014, Moore was arrested on charges of conspiracy, unauthorized access to a protected computer (a.k.a. hacking), and aggravated identity theft. The mom took her findings to the FBI, and through an investigation, law enforcement found that Moore did have an accomplice who he paid to hack women's accounts. Despite the efforts of the people who were posted on the site against their will, there wasn't a specific law against what Moore was doing in the early 2010s. Early in the doc, we are introduced to Charlotte Laws, whose daughter Kayla Laws was posted on the site. As told by the women who were posted on the site, Moore did not care that he was ruining their lives.
