Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is officially on the way. Forget the Hellfire Club. There’s a brand new group of adventurers in town. For a while, it seemed as if a Dungeons & Dragons film might never see the light of day.

The New Dungeons & Dragons Movie Looks . . . Surprisingly Great (Forbes)

The new Paramount Dungeons & Dragons movie, Honor Among Thieves, is surprisingly faithful to the D&D experience.

I mean, it could still be terrible—I’m jaded enough to not get my hopes up too high—but this trailer is definitely a pleasant surprise. I did make it to both the Severance and Dragon Prince panels Thursday and am sallying forth to many more today. Ben Stiller, at the Severance panel, was revealed to also be a Comic-Con virgin. So, in very broad strokes, this looks like the kind of campaign where the Dungeon Master (or DM) has tried pretty hard to craft a serious story only for the players to basically turn it into a running gag. The Chris Pine-led adventure film appears to actually understand and appreciate what an actual session of Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming is like. . . . D&D nerds?

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Wins Over Hall H With ... (Game Rant)

Two clips at Comic-Con establish the tone and reverence that the filmmakers and cast are bringing to Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

The other clip from Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was more action-oriented in nature. For incorporating D&D concepts and lore, the scene worked well enough to ratchet the tension and offer some fun surprises. Essentially, the scene was like a mini-D&D session, where the group is trying to reach an end-goal while avoiding an enemy. The filmmakers and cast behind Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves took to Hall H well-prepared. The first Dungeons and Dragons clip sees the four main characters, played by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis resurrecting corpses in order to gain intel on the whereabouts of a special helmet. The Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves presentation included three exclusive clips: one behind the scenes featurette and two clips from the movie.

Chris Pine battles a flesh-eating jelly square in the first Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves toy.

Other D&D toys based on the movie and the game at large have been promised, so we expect additional figures to be unveiled shortly. Full-size Dragonborn and Aarakokra mannequins have also been seen at the film's pop-up tavern, so it seems as if this D&D flick is going all-in on the game's deepest cuts. Judging by items stuck to the outside (you can see what looks like Michelle Rodriguez's axe from promos in one of the product shots, for example) and the skeleton parts that are included, we can only assume these poor souls failed their Dexterity save and were gobbled up.

Comic Con: Hugh Grant cracks racy Dungeons & Dragons joke on ... (Metro)

Hugh Grant recently made an appearance at San Diego Comic Con, and he cracked a risque Dungeons & Dragons joke that had his co-stars shocked.

The joke then carried on throughout the day, as Hugh and Michelle attended several of the convention’s panels and spoke to more and more fans. The movie is set to premiere in the spring of 2023, and will star Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman) and Bridgerton’s Duke of Hastings, Regé-Jean Page. And during the middle of the film’s Comic Con panel for the movie on Thursday afternoon, Hugh cracked a joke that had the audience laughing and co-star Michelle Rodriguez shocked.

The official description for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves reads: "A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. The red dragon is likely Themberchaud, who appears in the Out of the Abyss adventure. That's because that red dragon is almost certainly a specific red dragon pulled straight out of D&D lore.

Dungeons & Dragons movie: trailer, cast, synopsis and everything ... (British GQ)

Watch the new Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer starring Chris Pine, Hugh Grant and Regé-Jean Page.

The Comic Con trailer gave us our first look at Pine, Grant, Page and Michelle Rodriguez in the movie. Remarkably for a cultural object often relegated to nerd fodder, it will be the basis for a multi-million dollar Hollywood adaptation led by some massive stars: Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Hugh Grant. If you'd have told us this could happen five years ago, we wouldn't have rolled the dice, we'll tell ya that much. If it wasn't for Stranger Things, with the Hawkins boys being the noted D&D aficionados in contemporary popular culture, would we even be talking about a Dungeons & Dragons movie right now?

Both games have Intellect Devourers, but the art is slightly different between D&D and Pathfinder.

It seems BossLogic might not be enough of a D&D fan to have known the difference between Pathfinder and D&D monsters. The one you see in the poster is actually from Pathfinder, not D&D. There’s plenty of Dungeons & Dragons references in the trailer to satisfy even the most ardent D&D fan, but those fans might have noticed something a little strange about one of the movie’s posters.

The History of Dungeons & Dragons Isn't What You Think (WIRED)

In 'Slaying the Dragon,' author Ben Riggs goes deep into the backstory of TSR to reveal a company in disarray.

I thought that I was going to tag 3rd Edition on as a chapter of my book. At one point TSR claimed to be the largest publisher of fantasy fiction in North America. They claimed that there were millions of Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance novels in print. Because we can certainly agree that role-playing games are something worthy of being created, but how are we going to make sure that the people who create them make a decent living?” “Even though it’s an artistic high point for the company—and maybe ever for the brand of Dungeons & Dragons—it didn’t make any money.” It was not at all the story I was told. “That was the story I was expecting.

John Francis Daley, co-director the new D&D movie, has the most heartwarming connection to the franchise.

“It is really the feeling you get when you play the game and that really is what we tried to do here with this film. “I’ve been an avid player since I was 14 years old and I was an actor on the show Freaks and Geeks,” Daley said in Hall H at Comic-Con, to much applause. Anyone skeptical that there’s a new Dungeons and Dragons movie coming out is completely warranted.

Similar to how the Marvel movies take liberal interpretations with the comics, Dungeons & Dragons fans should be okay with the movie not following the Player's Handbook to the letter. If a game's Dungeon Master says that it's okay for a druid to transform into an owlbear....then it's okay for the druid to transform into an owlbear. Well, some Dungeons & Dragons fans are forgetting about the most important rule in Dungeons & Dragons: having fun.

'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' Trailer Breakdown ... (Collider.com)

The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer released at SDCC 2022 features all the magic, creatures and locations fans will recognize.

The team of thieves can be seen venturing into the Underdark and navigating the vast underground cities in search of the sorcerer's helmet. This subterranean realm is home to creatures who have never seen the light of day, such as aboleths, mind flayers, and gray dwarves. Upon its conceptualization for the film, the prison was added to the 2020 game update, with stories and encounters that take place within its walls. Three enchanted weapons are shown in the trailer, including a Flame Tongue Ax, being wielded by the fierce Barbarian, and a Green Flame Blade. Additionally, a powerfully enchanted helmet with yet to be revealed powers is found in the Underdark and worn by the party’s sorcerer. The statues may have once been the Walking Statues of Deepwater, ethereal guardians created to protect the city's vaults, fortresses and temples. In a battle within the forest, the Tiefling can be seen turning into one of these powerful monsters and destroying the human soldiers who stand in her way, throwing them about like ragdolls. It is presumed that this Lich will be the main villain in the Honor Among Thieves story, as the powerful sorcerer uses its new, terrifying powers to the chantings of a cult-like crowd, and red vine-like shapes spill into the air surrounding them. A Gold Dragon is seen ferociously roaring in the face of the bard, though some speculate this is not a true Gold Dragon, but a Stone Golem carved to look like one. Displacer Beasts have a similar build to that of a large black panther, though this monster has six legs as well as two tentacles rooted in its back, used to grab, drag and thrash those it hunts. Though, they have emotional and moral range, as well as the ability to be any class, such as Druid, Mage or Fighters, they aren’t tied to the ongoings of the realms below. The bard is joined by Michelle Rodruigez (The Fast and the Furious), who takes on the role of a powerful, Flame Tongue ax wielding barbarian, and Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) who will portray a sorcerer with a few enchanted tricks up his sleeve. He is seen wearing a pin with the symbol of the Harpers upon his lapel, signaling that he may be part of the secret Sword Coast faction dedicated to good and the preservation of history.

SDCC has trailers coming out its ears! Watch teasers for the Dungeons & Dragons movie, the Teen Wolf film, and the new National Treasure show.

Nicolas Cage, who anchored the National Treasure movies, is not in the series, and per The A.V. Club didn’t get mentioned on the SDCC panel until a fan asked about him. Naturally, there are quite a few trailers coming out at SDCC. Another one is for the movie sequel to Teen Wolf, which wrapped up after six seasons in 2017. Also, I’m getting Thor: Love and Thunder vibes from the classic rock score.

Dungeons & Dragons' Background Changes are a Good Sign for 6th ... (Game Rant)

Dungeons & Dragons has started making backgrounds much stronger lately, and that could be an omen of character design in the next edition.

For instance, in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, players can choose backgrounds based on the college of Strixhaven that they belong to; depending on their choice, they gain a feat based on that college, as well as access to additional spells. Feats are usually pretty inaccessible in D&D 5e, since players generally have to sacrifice an Ability Score Improvement to gain one of these powerful features. Ultimately, it remains to be seen if backgrounds really are such a big priority for D&D 6e; the new edition could instead pour its energy into class features and new race bonuses while keeping backgrounds simple. If this is the case, then D&D 6e will be a major leap forward in player empowerment, making characters far stronger from the beginning of the game than they ever have been before. Some background features are decent, like the Outlander's ability to find food and water consistently in the wilderness, but the majority fall short. D&D 5e's backgrounds are one of the edition's most fundamental features, providing players with skills and items based on where they come from.
