Everton suffer heavy defeat to MLS club Minnesota United as Frank ... (Sporting News AU)

After narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League last season, Everton's preseason form suggests those struggles are far from behind them.

Though the club pocketed a sizeable transfer fee, the 25-year-old's goals were crucial in their Premier League survival and he needs to be replaced. The Toffees next face Blackpool in another friendly on July 24 and will kick off their Premier League season against Chelsea on August 6. The Toffees named a relatively strong starting side for the friendly match on Wednesday with Jordan Pickford, Micheal Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all on the team sheet.

Everton player 'ratings' against Minnesota United as few positives ... (Liverpool Echo)

Jordan Pickford. This will have been a hugely frustrating match for the England No.1. He actually produced a number of really good saves throughout his half ...

However, he couldn't take advantage of any and left the field at half time without a goal to his name. He was always keen to put defenders on the back foot and set up chances for teammates. Otherwise, he clearly showed his frustration on a number of occasions with some tasty challenges on his opponents. Defensively he was faced with some stern tests and wasn't quite up to a few of them on this occasion, so there's work to be done before the campaign starts. However, the winger didn't get enough opportunity to really stretch his legs and have a go at the opposition defence. He's still a player that will clearly need time in the side to get back up to speed following an extended period on the sidelines.

Inchy's men take the plaudits in romp over disappointing Everton (Toffeeweb)

Everton's pre-season preparations continued in St Paul, Minnesota with a game against Adrian Heath's Minnesota United that ended with a heavy defeat for ...

At least it was a beautiful night in Minnesota. I’m hopeful only because a new squad takes time to gel, and also because Mina is fit and we have Tarkowski. Beyond that, unless we find some composure and creativity in midfield we’re in big trouble. That’s funny, I’ve been running the squad through my head all week and keep coming up with 31 names so missing one but I was determined not to cheat. If nothing else, he once got stuck in and was at least involved in the game, but even that seems to've left him. So unless some decent players sign, unless the useless fuckers fuck off and the fans remain the same. They're incapable of stringing more than a couple of passes together, don't supply the forwards and constantly put the defence under pressure by, so easily, giving the ball up. Let's hope we can put on an exhibition and gives us some hope in what has been a very disappointing Transfer Window to date. Hopefully we get a better idea of what to expect for the new season. Everton Beaten In US Pre-Season Contest (Everton Football)

Everton were beaten 4-0 by Minnesota United in the final match of their US tour as boss Frank Lampard gave game time to 23 members of his Blues squad.

Everton were making all the running at this stage, but it was Minnesota who would double their advantage. He shot at goal but his effort was just too close to Minnesota goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, who made a comfortable stop. Reynoso stepped up and coolly slotted home from 12 yards. After good work from Alex Iwobi, the ball was eventually laid into the path of Anthony Gordon on the right flank. The game was almost exclusively being played in the Minnesota half, but the home side threatened again when Justin McMaster headed against the crossbar from a corner delivery. The Minnesota clash was played at a brisk pace from the outset and an excellent Everton move three minutes in almost resulted in the game’s opening goal.

Recap | Minnesota United - 4, Everton - 0 (Minnesota United FC)

Premier League pedigree meant nothing to MNUFC as the Loons showed Everton how to play soccer.

What began as a high energy, end-to-end game had turned into a comedy of errors for the Toffees. In the 32nd minute, the pressure once again paid off, as a Kemar Lawrence cross caught a sliding Michael Keane and found its way into the Everton net. Everton’s chances began to get fewer and far between, as the Loons took advantage of an apparently knackered opposition. Silky footwork from Emanuel Reynoso led to his cross being handled by Everton’s Tom Davies in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick in the 18th minute. This high press approach opened the Loons up to counter attacks, several of which were only inches away from being tapped in. You’d be forgiven if you thought the Premier League team was wearing black and blue tonight, as Minnesota United showed an English Premier League side that this is the land of soccer, not football.

Everton at Minnesota United: Final | Loons win 4-0 (Royal Blue Mersey)

The Blues play their second and last game of the pre-season tour of the US.

The hosts tonight are managed by former Blue Adrian Heath and sit in fourth place in the Western Conference of the MLS, well-placed for a playoff berth. 14’ - Long ball for the Loons and a Keane mistake! 4’ - Iwobi starts the play and almost ends it with a goal too! Lampard will likely make some changes to the XI that started on Saturday, and once again could change the entire lineup for the second half to ensure everyone gets adequate playing time. Davies centres a midfield with Doucoure and Iwobi, and Gray and Gordon flanking Calvert-Lewin up top. Big chance for Iwobi to show today that he can dictate the pace of a game. The Blues lost their first game against Arsenal, but should look a lot more cohesive tonight. Sends Pickford the wrong way, and the hosts lead 1-0. 45’ - Halftime, and the hosts lead 3-0. He looks to have switched to the left now. Oof, just like that, the Loons now lead 2-0. Pickford is livid at the midfield.

Frank Lampard fumes at Everton players as Super Mario sounds ... (Liverpool Echo)

We've taken a look at four moments you might have missed as Everton suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat to bring their US tour to an end.

However, his expression was almost a face of thunder, and not one you'd have wanted to come face-to-face with in the dressing room if that were a Premier League performance. Regardless of whether this was a pre-season match or not, there will have been enough on the pitch for Frank Lampard to be seriously unhappy with his squad. That caused him to rotate and land very awkwardly on the small of his back, with his instant grimace as he hit the floor showing the pain he was in. However, it's perhaps something they need to be careful of in the coming weeks, just to hold back from those potential injuries. As it turns out, it's something of a tradition in the stadium. In particular, whoever was making the song choices clearly wanted to make their Merseyside guests as welcome as possible by playing The Beatles' classic "Twist And Shout" at one stage.

‘We had an amazing night [against Crystal Palace] and an amazing run but, as soon as that finished, I put it to bed very quickly, so the players have to put it to bed as well, because we were in that fight for a reason. ‘We know there is a void in forward areas, we are short in numbers there. ‘We’re all [as a club] very collectively joined up on that and it reinforces the thoughts we’ve all got.

After a disappointing pre-season tour in the United States, the Toffees will head back to England where they have a couple of more friendlies lined up. A point-blank miss from Dele Alli perfectly summed up the day for Everton as they were hammered 4-0 by Minnesota United in the final game of their United States tour. The midfielder got the best opportunity of the night for the Blues after Mason Holgate drilled in a low cross inside the six-yard box across the face of the goal.

Minnesota 4-0 Everton: Dele Alli's woeful miss summed up Toffees ... (GiveMeSport)

Video shows Dele Alli miss an absolute sitter for Everton last night and rival fans are loving it.

Whether he couldn’t sort his feet out in time or was just being lackadaisical, we aren’t sure. The ball slips through the grasp of the keeper and the nearest defender but Alli seemingly tries to tap it home with outside of his right foot, only to send it wide of the post. All in all, it was a disastrous night of preparations for the Merseyside club and Lampard’s got his work cut out to get them into shape ahead of the new campaign.

My Everton #48: Rumbled By The Headmaster (Everton Football)

We were the last four on the coach. Now all we had to do was get into our jeans and other civvies ready for the game. The four of us walked back to our classroom. To be fair, all of them remained on their best behaviour, even the Liverpool supporters! The final bell sounded. The answer was 4pm. And you were all unfit for school?” The question was asked without any attempt to disguise his sarcasm or distaste. I muttered something about October. He reminded me of the exact date. We were rumbled – and bunking off school had serious consequences. Oh look, Burnley away in the league.” Myself and three fellow students were summoned to the headmaster’s study. The drama continued.

Also, through the team, there are things I want to strengthen, and I can be honest about that, because a club like Everton has to have a competitive squad.” As memories of Howard’s time at the Blues and Donovan’s fleeting loan spells fade into the past, just how many soccer enthusiasts in the land of the free are going to pick them going forward? Indeed, Men in Blazers , the same podcast who held a sell-out live event with Lampard, Anthony Gordon and Jordan Pickford at Washington DC’s historic Howard Theatre last week, hosted by Scouser and lifelong Blue Roger Bennett, even tweeted “Everton in danger of becoming the first team in league history to be relegated from MLS” as the club were on their way to their heaviest loss on US soil since Czech champions Dukla Prague smashed them 7-2 in the first leg of the International Soccer League final back in 1961, a gruelling eight-match competition that saw Harry Catterick’s side make four transatlantic flights. As a club, it [the Minnesota game] reinforced the situation in terms of what we need to do with the squad, because it has to be stronger that what we saw tonight.” but, as soon as that finished, I put it to bed very quickly, so the players have to put it to bed as well, because we were in that fight for a reason. We consistently get told that results ‘don’t matter’ in pre-season matches and the primary focus remains on fitness at this stage, after all winning the Florida Cup last year proved a preamble to what turned out to be a season that produced the joint lowest equivalent points total in the club’s history.

Everton manager Frank Lampard might look at a deal for Nicolas Pepe if he's available to sign on loan, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

He did score a crucial goal in a key victory over Wolves and claim an assist on the final-day, but it was another campaign to forget in what’s quickly becoming a nightmare career in English football. In three seasons in the top-flight, the Ivorian has scored just 16 goals and laid on nine assists, with his lack of consistency leading him to struggle to start regularly. The winger made the switch to England from Lille for a club record fee back in 2019, but Pepe has failed to live up to expectations at the Emirates.
