Australia's Eleanor Patterson wins gold medal in World Athletics ... (ABC News)

Australia claims gold at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, with Eleanor Patterson topping the podium in the women's high jump.

So let's just wait and see. And Patterson makes it over too. Uzbekistan's Safina Sadullayeva is also there, but has only cleared 1.96m so far and passed at 1.98m, so she's tied for fifth with Olyslagers. I love having blogs back....thoroughly enjoyed Olympic one, i became the unofficial poet of the games....Hoping all the Aussies get goio results heading into Commonwealth games. Hoping all the Aussies do well, but especially Eleanor Patterson....she is one a a famous few putting our hometown, Leongatha, on the map...,we're all behind her. Patterson retains the lead. And Elena Vallortigara takes the bar off with her first attempt. It's the first time she's ever jumped that high, and what a time to do it! Stunning performance by this veteran of the sport. Patterson also takes the bar off three times at 2.04m, but she's beaming. That will do it for me, but I had a great time. By Jon Healy

Wightman’s time of 3:29.23 was the second-fastest 1500 at a world championships, after the 3:27.65 run by middle-distance legend Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999. Here I am because I knew I wasn’t finished,” she said in an interview with The Age and the Herald last year ahead of the Tokyo Olympics final. The bar was put to 2.02m and Patterson cleared it at her first attempt. The bar was put to 2.04m. That matched the national and Oceania record and, more importantly, vaulted her to the gold medal place after all of her rivals missed the height at their first attempts. Mahuchikh, the Tokyo bronze medallist who also won silver at the last world’s in Doha, then missed twice more meaning Patterson had secured gold before she had her final jump. She shifted from a shy country girl to a strong assertive and mature woman. I haven’t done anything essentially since then, so I am just so happy to be partnered up with [coach] Alex Stewart and to be on this journey.” She missed again, but that mattered not a jot, as she had won gold. Her two misses at 1.98m, however, meant that she was sitting in fourth place. At her next attempt Patterson cleared two metres. The other three women then all cleared two metres.

But no-one could get near Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh won claimed gold with a massive throw of 71.13m. She endured some ups and downs in the intervening years before making the career-changing decision to link up with coach Alex Stewart. Teenager Calab Law (20.72) bowed out as expected in the men’s 200m semis and will now turn his attention to the world juniors in Colombia. Jacinta Beecher was also run out in the women’s 200m semis in 23.14. Mahuchikh and Patterson then each missed three times at 2.04m, ensuring Patterson would win the gold on countback.
