Former Aston Villa winger has another Champions League tie this week after moving to Slovakia 'to prove everyone wrong'

We got in a huddle at half-time in extra time and we were saying ‘Our lives depend on this’ because that was the situation we were in.” It wasn’t a fear of not playing, it was the fear that I had to make it work. If we do get to the group stage, that is a massive bonus and I am going to give it everything to get through because some of the teams you can possibly play against is the motivation.” He says of moving to Slovan: “It was a shock. It was the fear of not doing well; that is what motivated me. To do so and be involved in everything was really good for me.”

Villa 1-0 Brisbane Roar recap and reaction as Archer and Kesler ... (Birmingham Live)

Our man Ashley Preece is in Townsville for Villa's second Queensland Champions Cup match, this one against an A-League side.

The ex-QPR and West Brom man is on for his Brisbane Roar debut. A trio of changes for the Australian side here now. Villa's best player of that half given his output going forward, put in a ridiculous crossfield pass straight to Ings as he couldn't convert. Buendia was right on the left-wing, there. Archer back in the goals, shock! the Villa fans sing. It was a fairly uneventful first half for Villa who were left frustrated by the A-League side, as the hosts sat deep and invited their Premier League opponents on to them in an attempt to break down their resolute defence. The 19-year-old was a real attacking outlet and bombed into the box whenever he could. Kesler Hayden made Freke work with a left-footed hit while, with 20 to go, raced away and picked out Archer with successive cut-backs, the latter an assist as the striker rolled home. "I thought we lacked spark and quality in the final third. Kaine Kesler Hayden: Put in a dangerous cross just moments in which Roar keeper Freke parried. "I enjoyed the second half more than the first half.

Steven Gerrard will have a big decision to make – start both, or pick the Argentine ahead of Coutinho. Poor from the £17m ( Sky) man. Hit the post after neat control from a Chambers pass. With the Roar sitting so deep defensively, Coutinho was often crowded out in terms of space. Some lovely link-up play with Leon Bailey on the left flank and tried to make things happen. Couple of nice long balls forward, almost found Danny Ings with a direct ball to the England striker.

At the other end, the 18 year-old was solid and dealt with any danger well. The 26 year-old linked well down the right with Kesler-Hayden at times, and worked non-stop out of possession as always. Fan favourite Emi Buendía put in a trademark performance at the Queensland Community Bank Stadium, demonstrating his raw creative abilities throughout his 45 minutes on the pitch. Everyone was glad to see the number four back out on the field, and there were no post-injury concerns for the defender who looked as accomplished as expected alongside partner in crime Tyrone Mings. Konsa tried to top his return off with a speculative, outside of the foot effort from a corner which (sadly) sailed well wide of the mark. The Burkino Faso captain hit a strike just over in what was one of his side’s best chances of the half, and the 26 year-old enjoyed linking with overlapping full-back Matty Cash down the right too. Due to the run of the play in the first-half, striker Danny Ings struggled to get near the ball and make his mark on the game. A somewhat sub-standard showing from Villa’s Brazilian number 23 who had to drop deep throughout his performance to get a touch on the ball. A typical John McGinn display in Townsville; plenty of energy and tackles combined with moments of intricacy and flair. With every game, Boubacar Kamara looks more and more accomplished, and makes a case to be one of the most shrewd signings across the transfer window. Carlos looks like the real deal in claret and blue, and his first-half partnership with Calum Chambers formed a superb, stable barrier that kept Brisbane quiet for the majority of the opening 45 minutes. Villa’s number two bombed down the right throughout the first 45 minutes, and put a number of teasing crosses into the Brisbane box. Captaining his side for the first-time will have pleased Villa’s number one, who played his first minutes this pre-season.

Douglas Luiz transfer claims could prompt Aston Villa rethink amid ... (Birmingham Live)

BirminghamLive brings you the latest Aston Villa news as fresh claims about Douglas Luiz's future are made.

Villa are themselves keen to add another midfielder to their squad, which would make Luiz's task to break into the first XI even harder, but Gerrard would be content with his depth if the Brazilian remains at B6. But reports in Italy claim that AC Milan will not be firming up their interest in the midfielder this summer. Luiz has just 12 months left on his current deal and clubs will be aware they he could leave Villa Park for a reduced price as he will be allowed to discuss a free transfer with interested teams in January.
