Arsenal reach verbal agreement to sign Manchester City's ... (The Guardian)

Arsenal have reached a verbal agreement in principle with Manchester City to buy Oleksandr Zinchenko for about £30m.

Zinchenko joined City from the Russian club Ufa in 2016 and made 128 appearances for them, including 10 Premier League starts last season. His exit is likely to hasten their move for Brighton’s left-back Marc Cucurella. On Friday City blocked Nathan Aké’s proposed transfer to Chelsea but they have been willing to sell Zinchenko at the right price.

How the Gunners got on in the second half of their preseason friendly at the M&T Stadium in Baltimore.

Reuell Walters: Moved out to left back in a three, despite being a 17-year-old who's played right back most of his career. Used in a two with Pepe and caused some issues for Everton with his movement. Looks happy in midfield, but the congestion in that area of the pitch means that his athleticism and dribbling sometimes isn't as accentuated as it could be. Clearly, a leading voice in the Arsenal defensive line and could be seen constantly marshalling his teammates into position. Rob Holding: Came on in his natural habitat at the heart of a back three and looked really solid. Hector Bellerin: Had a very high starting position when Arsenal were in position for an interesting tactical innovation of how we can expect Arsenal to play.

Gabriel Jesus turns provider, poking a ball into the box and it gets by the entire Everton back line with Saka waiting at the far right post. And the Gunners' Saka has a shot blocked inside the box after just 30 seconds. Arsenal already on the front foot. The Everton midfield is non-existent outside of a couple of Abdoulaye Doucoure defensive interventions. Halftime: Arsenal with a deserved lead after jumping all over Everton from the opening kickoff. You can tell there will be a gap between Everton and Arsenal this season. Everton are looking for counterattacking opportunities with numbers behind the ball. The dead ball was earned by Nketiah, who drew a yellow card for James Tarkowski and he has been the Arsenal bright spot of the second half. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford whiffed on a corner kick and the ball reached Jesus, who was lurking at the far post and quickly fired the ball into the roof of the net. The Toffees looked better in the second half with the introduction of Alex Iwobi, Anthony Gordon, and Salomon Rondon, but after a bright start the match fizzled out. 56th min.: Much better start to this second half by Everton. The Toffees are seeing more of the ball. Arsenal looked good in possession, its center back pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel were exceptional, and Gabriel Jesus shone once again at center forward.

Gabriel Jesus marked his first Arsenal start with the opening goal in a 2-0 victory over Everton to win the Charm City Cup in Baltimore on Saturday.

Obviously, it was a big moment for him to come in an Arsenal shirt in the States and play in front of the crowd and he did well. The way he has settled in, he’s an extraordinary character, a lot of personality and he’s great at what we want. But they are not just 9s, they have all the qualities for the way we play, they are fantastic. He has a lot of leadership skills, I can see straight away what he’s doing with the boys and he’s the type of guy that we want. He’s a real threat and this is what we need. So it’s what is available and what the team needs. But not on his own sometimes, but don’t close that door because Gabby in relation to what the opponent does in certain games we are going to have to use him in different positions. It depends, look at Harry Kane, look at Haaland. I think at the moment there are certain strikers that are available, they grow, they have their moments in European football. We were a threat all the time, we had a lot of bodies attacking. They are looking for him, he’s generating chances, good connections around specific spaces we want to exploit with him especially, and yeah, we’re really happy. We understood where the spaces were and the execution was really good. I think the first half we were really good, really intense.

A constant livewire. While only a friendly, the defender showed what he is all about. With a goal and an assist to add to his brace from Germany, it has been a scorching start to the forward's Arsenal career. While he didn't get on the ball, he played a part in the second goal too, creating space with his run for Saka to finish. Solid night for Xhaka, got on the ball a lot and managed to hit the post but not as involved as you would normally expect. Bukayo Saka added the second, getting on the end of a ball from Jesus to make it comfortable for Arsenal.
