A six-under from McIlroy is two off leader Cameron Young, while Poulter is part of a mighty pack on three-under after the first round.

Although it needed special permission from The R&A for him and his father, a club pro in upstate New York, to play off the back tees. And since a tied-sixth finish in Abu Dhabi at the start of the year, there was no form of note before his defection. “I would have been 13,” he recalled of his Scottish vacation. “If I listen to a lot of nonsense, then I’m going to get distracted. It did not help him much as he finished tied 138th when missing the cut. All I heard was clapping.”

The 2022 Open Championship began with a 156-player field. The Open has one of the more lenient cut lines of the four majors. Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm all sit beneath the cut line at the start of the second round and firmly under threat of missing out on weekend play.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – It was past 8 p.m. as Rory McIlroy made the eastward turn toward St. Andrews' final hole, walking out of the shadows cast by the Old ...

McIlroy said he isn’t concerned with the names who stand atop major leaderboards, even if they are THE PLAYERS champion, a two-time major winner, the world No. 1 or some of the game’s rising stars. Friday’s raucous roars would simply serve as an appetizer for the reception that McIlroy would receive with a win Sunday, following the footsteps of European legends like Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo in crossing the Swilcan Bridge en route to lifting the Claret Jug. Five hours earlier, McIlroy had doffed his cap in a show of respect directed at Tiger Woods as Woods walked down St. Andrews’ finishing hole for what may be the final time. They compete with the knowledge that their accomplishments will be remembered for generations, serving as inspiration and worthy of enshrinement. “It doesn’t matter what name is beside the 13 under.” There’s a bit of hyperbole to that statement. Greatness is McIlroy’s lone concern at this point in his career. Woods calls St. Andrews his favorite course in the world. Three years ago, his countrymen tried to cheer him to the weekend in the Open’s return to Northern Ireland, a tournament whose significance extended far beyond golf. The grandstands couldn’t fit all the interested observers who wanted to see him finish his round. He’d just made an unlikely birdie on the Old Course’s most penal hole, the one that forces players to overcome both a blind tee shot lined with O.B. and an approach shot over a sand-filled pit. McIlroy was in contention this time, though, just three shots off the lead.

2022 British Open leaderboard breakdown: Cameron Smith rockets ... (CBSSports.com)

There's a new leader at the 150th Open Championship, and it's a familiar face whose been on top plenty this season.

Viktor Hovland may have a say in this matter as well as he just holed out for eagle on the par-4 15th to also reach 9 under. This week will mark his best chance to date to capture one of the four big ones as he came in with a bit of momentum having finished inside the top 15 at the U.S. Open and is within reach of the lead. Instead, dropped shots on the easy par-4 ninth and par-4 12th squandered any momentum as he finished with a round of 2-under 70. Raising a trophy alongside Xander Schauffele at the Zurich Classic, Cantlay also boasts six top-five finishes in 2022, including last week at the Scottish Open. Despite his consistency, there are those critical of Cantlay as he has yet to match his talent level to production in major championships. After that, kind of once we made the turn, I made a good swing on nine, and after that I hit most of my shots close to how I wanted to. T3. Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland (-10): There is a bit of a Spiderman meme going on with these two as Hovland reminds me of a young McIlroy to an extent. He will begin the weekend five strokes off Smith's lead but has proven to be comfortable coming back from a significant margin as his victories at the Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational featured weekend runs. 2. Cameron Young (-11): The Open debutant began his second round with a bit of nerves as he made bogey on his second hole of the day. Yet, in order to succeed, the two will need to swap places as Hovland could use a bit more patience and discipline and McIlroy a bit more freedom. Five of the last six 36-hole leaders at The Open have gone on to win, and Smith should give a fine effort over the weekend in continuing this trend. For a player who has done a bulk of his major championship damage solely at Augusta National, Smith has taken exactly what works at the Masters and implemented it in this year's Open. The second round of the 150th Open Championship featured a little bit of everything on Friday. It began with fans sending Tiger Woods off in the grandest of fashions as the 15-time major winner's playing career at St. Andrews may have come to a close with a missed cut this week.

Open Leaderboard 2022 Live, Latest Scores, Updates - Cam Smith ... (Golf Monthly)

Cameron Smith leads a star-studded leaderboard as we head into the weekend of the 150th Open Championship.

As I would've probably mentioned in the live blogs from day 1 and 2, this is my very first Open Championship and it has been a very interesting experience. With the early groups just teeing off, the crowds are already started to work their way onto the golf course to try and get those key viewing positions and seats. Robert MacIntyre just snuck into the weekend and as a Scot he will be chuffed to bits with that. Popular American Kevin Kisner birdies the 1st and the pin is back left so I will expect to see lots of birdies chances on that hole today. Tiger, Phil and Morikawa are three of the biggest... And it felt very emotional, just because I just don't know what my health is going to be like.

THE OPEN is back and what a special one we have lined up in 2022 as it's the 150th edition. The world's biggest golf stars, including Tiger Woods, Rory.

Also being probably the biggest British favourite is something that always hangs over the British players in an Open Championship that when you have that favourite role, it's not that easy to deal with all the time.Thomas Bjorn It's not about playing perfect golf, it's about playing really smart golf and know your limitations of how to play that golf course. He knew how to play it. He's putting a lot of demand on that body. Tiger will be fine physically. I think St Andrews is demanding on the brain. I don't feel like there's any extra attention on me.Scottie Scheffler I'm here to play golf. I'm not going to listen. All I heard was clapping. - Kurt Kitayama -4 (18) - Barclay Brown -4 (18)

The final pair of Cameron Smith and Cameron Young are on the golf course as they look to fend off the pursuers in front. You can't ever really control it. You can't ever really conquer it. Is it possible to underrate the World No. 1? Not sure I've ever seen Viktor Hovland this dialed with the putter. From favorites to party crashers, the 2022 Open at St. Andrews is ... (ESPN)

There is the crowd favorite, Rory McIlroy, and the guys from LIV. There is the world No. 1 and those chasing their first major. Get ready for a wild weekend ...

Some of the world's best have waved goodbye to the championship on the Swilcan Bridge. There are those who had their careers made here. But the sheer unpredictability of this championship means no one truly knows exactly where this story will lead and what the outcome will be by Sunday evening. "But I'll be head down, trying to just do my job the next few days." As ever, there are those who were at slightly longer odds heading into The Open. This competition has a fine record of surprise winners, so Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala both have a chance. And many fancied McIlroy to be the man to end that wait. So I've just got to go out and do the best I can and worry about myself. "I feel different," Fitzpatrick said, referring to the confidence that comes with just having won a major. In his own understated way, he says he's in a "good spot" ahead of the weekend and says he will continue "playing off trouble" over the next two days. But lurking at 8 under is the world's best player and the reigning Masters champion. "I think being off late [Saturday] afternoon it's obviously going to be a bit firmer ... so I would say it's going to be pretty brutal out there," Smith said. There are those looking to end a long wait without a major, or for the world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler -- who's in a blockbuster pairing with Dustin Johnson on Saturday -- he's chasing a further feat in an already remarkable season. Still, you wouldn't know there's any pressure on Smith's shoulders, despite him setting an Open record at 13 under after two rounds (beating the previous mark of 12 under by Nick Faldo, Norman and Louis Oosthuizen). He's far more eager to talk about bingeing through "Peaky Blinders" or trying to catch up with how his Maroons are doing in the rugby league's State of Origin.
