Revealed: Why Fittler chose Saifiti over RCG, Klemmer (NEWS.com.au)

“Whether Nathan Cleary is or isn’t the front runner for the World Cup, I can’t control what he is doing. Stream the FOX LEAGUE State of Origin Game 3 REPLAY on Kayo with no ads during-play. The 2022 Suncorp decider will represent his 13th consecutive game in the No.7 jumper and without the instinctive magic of Munster, the Maroons are banking on Cherry-Evans’ experience in the nerve centre to deliver a victory for the ages. “It was made a lot more special with the journey I had taken falling out of the Queensland side and I fell out of favour with the fans and the people of Queensland, so to be able to feel that I won back some support, I felt like I did it at that moment when I held the shield up. If you want to know why Jacob Saifiti is now – and forever – a NSW Origin player, have a read of the text message which confirmed it all last Thursday. The only thing I can control is my footy and I am proud of the footy that I am playing and have played in this series. “If I can keep improving and playing well, then I will back myself to be there at the end of the year for Australia.” Now, with the Maroons rocked by a Covid crisis and reeling from a 44-12 hiding in Game Two, Cherry-Evans is primed to fight fire with fire with Cleary in a Suncorp decider that could define his Origin legacy. “My message to the guys is we cannot stop believing for one second _ we cannot give NSW a sniff of victory. “I remember the spirit we showed in the 2020 decider and I believe we can do it again,” said Cherry-Evans, who plays his 19th game for Queensland in the 2022 series decider. Hello and welcome to our rolling coverage for State of Origin Game III, the series decider at Suncorp Stadium. The Blues proved far too strong for Queensland in Perth with a 44-12 win, but their record of winning series deciders as Suncorp is hardly something to boast about, with just two decider victories in Queensland since the first Origin series 40 years ago. Cherry-Evans was torched by rival Nathan Cleary in Origin II, is in danger of losing his No.7 Australian jumper to the NSW halfback for the World Cup and leads Queensland onto Suncorp without his Covid-stricken playmaking cohort Cameron Munster.

QLD Maroons v NSW Blues: State of Origin Game 3 preview and ... (Zero Tackle)

The countdown has dragged on forever but we're finally here – the 2022 State of Origin Decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Thanks to Munster’s injury and the Blues’ rampage in Game 2, NSW should head into the game as favourites, but only just. While his numbers were better in Game 1, it remains to be seen how effectively DCE can lead the team and assert himself without Munster sharing the load. In a big boost for the Maroons, Kalyn Ponga has been cleared to play after passing all concussion protocols. Backing all of that up with excellent kicking and superb game management, he controlled the game superbly and will need to be contained if the Maroons are to have any hope. Eliminating those errors will be key to the Maroons asserting themselves on the contest, something they struggled to do as desperation crept into their play as they struggled to stay in touch with the rampaging Blues. After Queensland stunned the NSW Blues with a dominant 16-10 win in Game 1 the script was flipped in Perth as Brad Fittler’s team destroyed the Maroons 44-12 to level the series.

Dearden’s debut is a scenario only a Queenslander could dream up: touted as the next big playmaking talent after debuting in the NRL at 18 (same age as Cleary), falling so out of favour at the state’s flagship club Brisbane he was cut loose, then finding the magic dust this year at North Queensland to wear the jumper made famous by Wally Lewis, Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston in the Maroons’ most important Origin match in years. Tonight Nathan Cleary will try to tick one of the few boxes left in his career: winning a State of Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium. “One thing he did do from the day he arrived at our club, and every day since, is he’s just outworked everyone else,” says Cowboys general manager Micheal Luck. “I’d say he’s a footy nerd.”

Minute-by-minute report: Join Jonathan Howcroft for the third and final instalment at Suncorp Stadium.

There was a knock-on from Nanai in the contest for the ball in the air. The welcome to country is a breezy belter. He breaks on the left and a tackle later the ball is wide on the right through hands. I’ll leave you with my contacts details in case you want to join in the conversation. Momentum ebbs away with a loose pass and the series ends with Cleary overhitting his grubber allowing the Maroons to clear. The ball comes to ground, Papalii crumbs, and jogs over for a try! From good attacking territory in the middle of the field after the drop-out, Dearden reads the line superbly, drifting to his left and firing a bullet into the chest of the onrushing Val Holmes who busts through two tacklers and darts over the line and towards the posts. 25 mins: Queensland again go to hands early in the set and try to probe on the right edge. He dabs the Steeden onto his boot for Luai to dash onto and dive on - at the second attempt. The Panthers playmakers get to work in midfield but the Maroons hold their line - just about - and are happy with yet another line drop-out following the kick on the last tackle. The Blues are in a hurry. A penalty on halfway is taken quickly by Cleary who darts to the 20m line.

The immediate result after half-time was a wild brawl that saw punches thrown, skirmishes erupt and Maroons centre Dane Gagai and Blues centre Matt Burton dispatched to the sin-bin. The Queensland Maroons emerged victorious in an all-time Origin classic to clinch the shield after a breathtaking series decider in Brisbane.

But recovered from that setback to help Queensland complete a remarkable win. Got through his work and was solid without being spectacular. But it was his contributions in attack that were the most impressive. He was solid throughout and notched a crucial try right on the stroke of half-time when he reacted the quickest to a Harry Grant grubber into the in-goal. Replaced Collins early after being shifted to the bench to start the game, and quickly got into the contest when he was put on report for a swinging arm on Burton. Then, not long after, gave away a set restart by being too slow in the tackle. The Bronco got through a mountain of work in the middle and collected the Wally Lewis medal for an outstanding series. Set up the first try of the evening and was a constant menace with the ball, while stationed mainly out on the left side. He always seemed to find the correct plays and provided a cool head for the Maroons in a frantic match that spilled over into madness on multiple occasions. Involved in a fight with Burton in the opening stages of the second half that saw both men sent to the bin. In his first hit-up he dropped Cameron Murray to the floor with a trademark strong kick-return. The winger's night came to an unfortunate early end when he got his head in an awkward position while making a tackle. He burst through the line a number of times before his footwork lit up Suncorp, as he weaved through NSW’s defence to notch his first ever try for the Maroons.

State of Origin Game 3: NSW Blues player ratings (Sporting News AU)

New South Wales fell to an inspired Queensland side 22-12 on Wednesday night.

Copped a head knock in the opening minute and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. Yeo was almost an honorary member of the halves this match, contributing with a number of attacking-minded passes in the middle of the field. It was an incredible debut from Saifiti, rolling over the Maroons defence in his first carry and going on to make 137 run metres. He fitted in quickly and provided some great physicality, despite slowing down (like the rest of the team) later in the match. His knock-on in the second half when the Blues were struggling to get into the game was far from ideal. Was key to the Blues' first half momentum, however, his influence was limited later in the match. Nearly scored a try in the first half, but couldn't wrap himself around the post (and was later deemed to be offside). Was zippy and creative in the first half - also scoring via a composed put-down - but quietened in the second half. Had a little concentration lapse when he gave away an obstruction in the second half and was part of a Blues defence that simply couldn't keep up with a rampant Maroons side. Didn't break the match open as much as we've come to expect, but his creative grubber in the first half nearly created a try for the Blues. Unfortunately, he'll be remembered in this match for a dropped ball at end of the first half, handing the momentum back to the Maroons and ultimately leading to a try. An overly-audacious pass to Siosifa Talakai on the wing was a poor play that shifted the momentum of the match towards Queensland.

Ponga cops a lot of stick for his salary at the Knights, and for not living up to it every week. Finding the will to go all the way after everything Hunt had done on a brutal night of football? State of Origin Game 3, 2022: NSW Blues player ratings (Zero Tackle)

The New South Wales Blues have fallen short in the State of Origin decider, going down by ten points to the Queensland Maroons in Brisbane.

Made 27 tackles in 27 minutes, to show exactly how much time he had with the ball in hand. Worked hard with the ball in hand for 145 metres, but didn't have a good night overall. Paulo was among the Blues' best in the middle third. Crichton was one of the more baffling selections given the return of Jack Wighton, and the doubters were proven right. Only ran 136 metres despite six tackle breaks, which really goes to show what an excellent job the Maroons did in shutting him down. Tedesco has been the constant force for the Blues in this Origin series. Saifiti seemed to flip the momentum of the game when he came on, putting the Blues on the front foot for a period with 137 metres from 13 runs his ultimate finishing stat line, to go with five tackle breaks, a line break and a try. Not his best game, but still showed plenty as the Blues tried time and time again to breach the Maroons. Trbojevic was solid, but didn't have anything on the game he played upon being recalled in Perth. His running game was well short of where it needed to be, although 44 tackles for a single miss on a difficult night in the defensive line is a quality effort. Will be remembered for a howling pass which led to a repeat set for Queensland and Kalyn Ponga's try on the back of it. Worked hard all night trying to make it happen, but just couldn't. Didn't adapt at all well with his kicking game to the difficult situation the Blues faced and, despite a lot of run metres, should have found a way to spark more points in the opening stanza when the Blues had all the downhill running. To'o worked hard with the ball in hand but didn't get a lot of space, particularly in the second half.
