Melbourne Victory have signed ex-Manchester United and Portugal winger Nani as their marquee for the 2022-23 A-League Men's season.

The arrival of a storied player, even one in the tail end of his career, is a boost to the A-League Men's competition after a 2021-22 campaign where crowd numbers plummeted. "We're proud to be able to recruit a player like Nani to our club and believe he will be an incredible asset for Melbourne Victory and the entire A-League," an excited Popovic said. Melbourne Victory's Nani deal is a sugar hit; a gamble the A-League ... (ESPN Australia)

Can marquees reverse the A-Leagues' fortunes? There is much more involved in Nani's arrival in Australia than just footballing considerations.

Now, they are just as much an attraction as an athlete: the tickets sold and the eyeballs tuned in at home are just as big a marker of success as any trophies they are able to deliver. And the sugar that comes with the move will no doubt quickly dissipate if Nani proves unable to contribute on the field; Daniel Sturridge's first game for Perth Glory served to attract 18,000 fans at HBF Park, after all, but subsequent injuries and COVID chaos led to his time in Australia turning into a very expensive failure. If it truly wants a player that scores highly on the Name Recognition Index™ and can provide that sugar rush, there will almost inevitably be concerns that have scared off more wealthy suitors. For the marquees involved, arriving in these circumstances carries with it a necessary adjustment far beyond the practicalities of football in Australian conditions -- itself a not insignificant task. It is a deal that represents an investment in the long nights Australian fans spent on the couch watching him run out at Old Trafford alongside Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, the countless hours that have been spent controlling his virtual avatar during games of FIFA, or the ecstasy (or agony) of watching him take his penalty in the 2008 Champions League final. A casual footballing observer probably couldn't pick reigning Johnny Warren Medalist Jake Brimmer out of a line-up, but at the very least might be intrigued by the prospect of getting a chance to see a genuine former Premier League star.

Sources close to the talks, which have been spearheaded by Bulls chief executive Sam Krslovic and the APL and have stretched over many weeks, say Fabregas has other offers on the table, and that a final decision will hinge on the length of the deal and if his realistic salary expectations are met. Fabregas, a 2010 World Cup winner with Spain who played for Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea, might be the more renowned player, but Nani looks the safer bet in a football sense. All up, he has netted 123 goals in 567 top-flight club games.
