Charles Leclerc outduels Max Verstappen to win Austrian Grand ... (CNN)

Charles Leclerc outdueled Max Verstappen to win the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday and thrust himself back into the Formula One driver's championship race.

Congrats to Charles for the win! Good amount of points lost for both championships but I'm feeling better and better in the car. I had this problem with the throttle and it would get stuck at 20 or 30% throttle in the low speed, so it was very tricky but we managed to make it stick until the end and I'm so, so happy.

F1 Austrian Grand Prix 2022 results: Leclerc holds off Verstappen to ... (Sporting News AU)

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen started on pole for the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, but was unable to hold onto P1 as Charles Leclerc of ...

It all got a bit heated between Leclerc and Sainz in the early laps of yesterday’s race with some intense on-track battling which allowed the Dutchman to escape down the road. Lap 24: So to recap, Leclerc leads from Sainz, Verstappen and Hamilton. Leclerc did overtake Verstappen on track but then the Red Bull driver pitted for his hard tyres. Here, he'll be attempting to win his fourth Austrian GP from five attempts this afternoon which would make him the most successful driver at this event in history. Lap 10: Leclerc makes a huge dive on Verstappen at turn three but the Dutch driver just about stays infront of his championship rival for now. Lap 58: SAINZ IS OUT!!! His car is on fire and he's forced to pull over at the side of the track. Lap 55: Leclerc once again leads the Austrian Grand Prix as he overtakes Verstappen at turn three! The Mercedes man does well to defend at corner three but then the Dutchman flies past him down the straight to corner four. Sainz is almost engulfed in the flames as it quickly takes hold of his car which then starts to roll back towards the track. He has 3.6 seconds to make up on Leclerc but he could just run out of time in this race to steal the win away. It's currently a Ferrari lockout at the front in P1 and P2. The Dutch driver may just run out of laps as Leclerc struggles with throttle problems. That won't be any consolation to Perez, though, who now drops down to third in the World Drivers' Championship standings following Leclerc's victory.

What the teams said – Race day at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

The drivers and teams report back on all the action from the Red Bull Ring, for the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix 2022...

I think he was just a bit too keen, ran into me, and I was off in the gravel. “Nicholas suffered with some floor damage early in the race, which cost him a lot of downforce and made the car very difficult to drive. “The whole race we were more or less matching the McLarens, we hit a bit of traffic here and there but I was really happy with our pace and we’ve definitely made a step forward this weekend. “I was hoping for points today, that was the target, and it’s a bit disappointing to be finishing just outside the top ten. The pace in the car was reasonable and we got the points that we wanted, so happy in the end. We looked strong yesterday, but today we spent the first part of the race stuck in a train and then struggled with the hard tyre. Big thanks to everyone for working so hard at the track and back home, we made a good recovery from Friday to score some decent points." "I had a bit of an engine issue all race so I was just praying to God that it wouldn’t blow up, which it didn’t, so I’m super thankful for that so I could finish the race without a problem. As a team, we are heading in the right direction and we have good momentum before heading to Paul-Ricard, one of the team's home races, and of course mine too. We had a lot of damage to the car and we were going nowhere so we had to retire. Quite soon I felt it wasn’t going to be a one-stop race just because of the way the tires were behaving – the winds were very different and difficult to manage. To score a single point on this race is a bit of a shame, but we can be very happy with our overall pace and performance as a team.”

Charles Leclerc pips Max Verstappen to F1 victory at Austrian GP ... (The Guardian)

Charles Leclerc hung on through the tense final stages to cut Max Verstappen's championship lead to 38 points.

Lap 27/71: Leclerc is back up to second after Sainz pits. Lap 58/71: But just as he readies himself for the overtake, Sainz’s engine goes and sends his car trundling into the gravel. Lap 61/71: That was a worrying few moments for Sainz, who struggled to get out of his car as it went up in flames. Verstappen sets a fastest lap on his new hards. Lap 56/71: Russell goes past Alonso for sixth and eyes Ocon 2secs in front. He clambers out of the car – which has burst into flames – and sits down on the grass, distraught. It is unlucky for them today with Carlos but our pace at the end of the race, we still have the fastest lap, but we didn’t have the range we had yesterday and that is something we need to understand. To finally show that we have the pace in the car and we can do it is incredible. But second place is still a good result for us on a tricky day.” The last five races have been incredibly difficult for myself and for the team. Ferrari just seemed lighter on the tyres and obviously they had a pace advantage and that gives you more strategic options. “Weirdly [the throttle issue] was more or less the same time [as Sainz’s retirement], so I had it in my mind.

'F*** off': Mercedes boss' stunning swipe at 'brainless' F1 fans after reports of sexist, racist abuse.

“As Formula 1, if we manage to find these people, we need to take hard actions. A normal human being, I think, should think like that and should behave like that. The Red Bull Ring has a distinct music festival-like atmosphere owing the campgrounds and caravan sites encircling the small track. “We just need to target these guys and pick them out and say, ‘You’,” he said. It didn’t actually do anything — there was no funding towards anything, there was no program to actually create change and spark that conversation. We Race as One was all good and well, but it was just words.

Leclerc survives late scare to hold off Verstappen for Austrian Grand ... (RaceFans)

Charles Leclerc passed Max Verstappen for the lead three times and managed a stuck throttle in the closing laps to win the Austrian GP.

By lap 33, Leclerc was in DRS range of Verstappen and pulled to the inside at the uphill braking zone of turn three to sweep by and back into the lead. Verstappen then pitted for a second time at the end of lap 36 – the halfway point of the race – for another set of hard tyres. With Leclerc through, Verstappen began falling into the clutches of Sainz behind. Two laps later, Leclerc used DRS to tuck into the leader’s slipstream and then lunge to the inside of turn four to muscle his way into the lead. Sainz fought back to retake third from Russell, who then came under pressure from Sergio Perez. As Perez tried to pass the Mercedes around the outside of turn four, the pair touched at the apex of the corner, sending Perez spinning into the gravel and falling to the back of the field. When the lights went out, Verstappen kept the lead at the start, with Leclerc in third and George Russell moving into third ahead of Sainz.

By late Sunday afternoon, Sainz was being consoled in the team garage. "It's just a shame I couldn't give them a win today," he said. At some point, there was so much fire I just had to get out." "We suffered with the tyres. "It's something we could look at," Sainz said. He retired after 26 of 71 laps after being hit on the opening lap when trying to overtake George Russell's Mercedes. Russell got a five-second time penalty for the Perez incident but placed fourth. Unharmed, he sat on the grass to contemplate his bad luck. "Those are great points," Hamilton said. "It's great that we're finally having a normal race on my side." Even more impressive since Mercedes had to repair both cars after a late crash in Friday's sprint qualifying. After winning the Austrian Grand Prix, Leclerc's beaming smile was back.

Austrian Grand Prix: Leclerc on top in a grandstand finish (The Inner Sanctum)

Charles Leclerc held on for an emphatic win over Max Verstappen in Austria, with the race coming down to the final laps.

Out of the race, Sainz headed for the escape road as his engine continued to explode. Fortunately for Sainz, he got out of the car safely. The field was to do a second formation lap because of the disruption. Appearing to be short of pace in the sprint race, Ferrari decided on an alternate strategy. A spectacle ensued from the very beginning, as Fernando Alonso failed to start the sprint race. The Austrian Grand Prix hosted the second sprint weekend of 2022.
