I don't know. Still, van Gisbergen was satisfied with his call to sit out the end of the session to give himself some strategic freedom for the Shootout. The Kiwi then opted to sit out the rest of the session to save rubber, confident that his time was good enough to get into the Shootout.

VAN GISBERGEN TAKES TOWNSVILLE POLE BY 0.004s - Auto ... (Auto Action)

Reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has taken pole for this afternoon's 250km race in Townsville by just 0.004s.

It was a return to form for the Blanchard Racing Team and Tim Slade qualifying in ninth ahead of Scott Pye. While his Team 18 teammate Pye qualified in the top 10, Mark Winterbottomqualified in 13th ahead of the Kostecki cousins Jake and Brodie. Grove Racing driver David Reynolds has struggled to get comfortable on the hard tyres, despite this he only just missed out on a slot in the top 10. The in form Brad Jones Racing driver Andre Heimgartner was best of the rest qualifying fourth. Waters was the last man out, unlike SVG and Davison he was unable to save a set of new tyres for his shootout lap. He was up in sectors 1 and 2, however was unable to complete the lap with less grip, he was only 0.031s from pole however the margin was only enough for third.

Shane van Gisbergen edged Will Davison by 0.004s to claim pole for the first leg of the Townsville 500.

"I have no idea [what to expect in the race]. We'll just see what happens. "Obviously we were one of the only guys on new tyres so that helped us, but to be on the front row here is a huge help. Van Gisbergen and Davison were the only two drivers to run four new tyres in the Top 10 Shootout after rolling the dice on a single run in qualifying.

Van Gisbergen overhauls Davison in Townsville opener (Supercars.com)

Shane van Gisbergen has overhauled Will Davison in a gripping NTI Townsville 500 opener. Van Gisbergen made up 17 seconds on Davison after the second stops.

Van Gisbergen closed on the rear of Davison on lap 84, and armed with better drive traction, took the lead out of the final corner. Those behind stopped and took on Super Softs; Slade stopped on lap 59 and bolted on Hards, and rejoined behind Davison and Mostert. With 12 laps to go, van Gisbergen cleared Mostert at Turn 10, and was 7.4s behind the leader. Davison caught Slade, which allowed van Gisbergen to cut the margin to the #3 Mustang to 12.9s. Slade rocketed to the front, was up to second by lap 2, and passed Davison for the lead on lap 6. This is a modal window. Davison slashed Slade’s lead to 2.8s by half-race distance; all the while, van Gisbergen cleared Heimgartner and Reynolds. Van Gisbergen reeled in Davison and made the overtake at Turn 2 on lap 14. By lap 41, the margin from Slade to van Gisbergen was 16.8s, with Heimgartner helping him past De Pasquale. By lap 24, Slade led Reynolds by nine seconds; van Gisbergen dropped Davison, and was five seconds behind Reynolds. Van Gisbergen made up 17 seconds on Davison after the second stops. Davison cleaned up van Gisbergen off the line and shot into an early lead.

Tickford locks in #5 backer for rest of Supercars season (Speedcafe)

Tickford Racing has locked in naming rights backing from Snowy River Caravans on James Courtney's Ford Mustang for the rest of the Supercars season.

“Joining the team has grown our brand and energised our business in a way that is hard to replicate, so we’re very happy to be keeping our partnership on track the rest of this season.” Andrew Crank, CEO/managing director of Regent Caravans, said, “We are delighted to announce we are extending our relationship with Tickford Racing and that the Snowy River Caravans Mustang is here to stay for the rest of the season. “We’ve had a fantastic start to our relationship, obviously the podium in Perth [second in the latter race at Wanneroo] was a great start to that, but getting to work with the team there and welcome them to our team here at Tickford has been really fun.”
