The Skull and Bones pirate life is still firmly in Assassin's Creed 4 ... (GamesRadar+)

It's been far from smooth sailing for Skull and Bones. In development for nearly a decade, building off tech that we first saw in 2012's Assassin's Creed 3, ...

But to get a better view of the skirmish as it unfolds, you can switch perspective to the Crow's Nest, offering a more holistic view of the seas around you. To defend against incoming attacks from the forts, sections of the ship were heavily armored, but in other areas, that armor was exchanged for cargo bags to accommodate extra loot. In the new gameplay preview, Ubisoft made clear that the message of Skull and Bones is one of establishing your own destiny. If you're looking to chase down a merchant vessel, however, speed is of the essence, making a nimble navigation ship a better choice. While Ubisoft is yet to offer any hands-on opportunities to help us answer the latter, a new Ubisoft Forward dedicated to Skull and Bones has helped answer the former. Now, it looks like the studio might finally have thrown off that burden, but Skull and Bones still sits firmly in the shadows of Ubisoft's previous pirate offerings.

Hey Look, 'Skull And Bones' Finally Has A Release Date And New ... (Forbes)

Skull & Bones looks a lot like a multiplayer version of 'Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag' in its latest gameplay trailer, and that's not a bad thing.

The second trailer actually goes into quite a lot of detail about the gameplay, which is useful. I’m glad to see that the game has changed so entirely into what now appears to be a spinoff of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag—still one of my very favorites in the series, though barely an Assassin’s Creed game. You can attack other ships, raid bases and forts and team up with friends to play multiplayer on the high seas.

Ubisoft's Skull and Bones is real, and it's coming on November 8th (The Verge)

Today’s footage doesn’t seem too different from the leaked video, but with the rise of Our Flag Means Death, I’m sure we can look forward to having a lot of Stede Bonnets and Blackbeards and Spanish Jackies roaming the high seas. Earlier this year, leaked footage of Skull and Bones hit the internet, revealing an unofficial look at what to expect from a game it’s taken Ubisoft five years to develop. Skull and Bones takes place in the waters of the Indian Ocean during what was known as the “golden age of piracy.” Players start off marooned on an island and must work to build their reputation — known as infamy — in order to become the most feared pirate on the high seas.

To give your pirate a unique identity among the rest, you can customise them with outfits and accessories that you’ll unlock as you move up the ranks. There’s more to it than just building the right ship, though, as Skull and Bonss places an emphasis on the morale of your ship’s crew. These considerations need to made carefully when you undertake a contract, as you’ll have to survive the danger of the seas. Ubisoft mentioned they’re aiming for a dark and gritty tone to capture the dangerous and risky elements of golden age piracy. At its core, Skull and Bones is about becoming the most infamous and feared pirate in the lands. Ubisoft's 'Skull & Bones' is a full-blown pirate's life simulator and it's ... (Mashable)

Ubisoft's "Skull & Bones" is a game that lets players live the pirate's life: treasure hunts, boat battles, mutinies, and all.

In that context, Pellen's comments about pets being a locked piece of the post-launch plan are illuminating. Skull & Bones seems poised to offer fun times for pirate lovers at launch, but at first glance it feels more like a platform where players create their own fun than it does a fully fleshed-out game. Again, your ship is the focus in the bulk of Skull & Bones' gameplay. The loot question in particular "has generated a lot of debates on the game design team," Pellen said. In PvP spaces, it's a "finders keepers" free-for-all where the quickest players reap the biggest rewards, though a ship that's loaded with booty is also an attractive target for other players. The open-ended, rags-to-infamy story that players will build for themselves in Skull & Bones is meant to be an extension of that freedom. If you want a more peaceful experience, either alone or with friends, you can hop into a server that turns off the ability to commit acts of aggression against other players. Players are meant to tread that same basic path in Skull & Bones. You start out as a shipwreck survivor armed with little more than a spear and a small sailing vessel. That's reflected in-game by the amount of "Infamy" you've earned for engaging in all kinds of piratical behavior, like clearing contracts, raiding forts, or embarking on treasure hunts. Trope-y pirate things like peg legs and parrots on shoulders are part of the fantasy wish fulfillment Skull & Bones offers. The Ubisoft Singapore team behind Skull & Bones also built the naval combat in 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which powered its pirate fantasy with the help of some wildly compelling resource pillaging. The high seas action is still there, but it's been repackaged into a now-confirmed 2022 release that's best described as a pirate's life simulator.

Skull and Bones: 7 Things You Need To Know About Ubisoft's Pirate ... (IGN)

Unlike most of Ubisoft's open-world games, Skull and Bones does not have a campaign. “It is definitely not a storyline-driven game,” says Barnard. “You don't ...

“It could be that one of the factions is at that outpost at this time, and they're offering a certain set of contracts just for the time that they're there. That's the only way that you get all the loot in the cargo.” Smart use of your crew is vital if you want to sail away with the best loot. “I think it's very intuitive,” says Barnard. “It's very easy to pick up sailing your different ships that we have in the game. There’s a variety of ships to captain, from tiny dhows and sloops, to the mid-sized sambuks and brigantines, and beyond. You start with little more than the clothes on your back, and must work your way up from sea urchin, to sailor, to scheming captain. And the more infamous you become, the more you’ll be respected by the world’s characters. “Kingpin is where a new type of experience starts and that can end up being a little bit more competitive.” “It's maybe about bringing some dangerous contraband to different places around the world, or going after and taking out named pirates that are causing trouble for one of the Kingpins, or plundering one of the settlements to get a certain item. So if there’s no campaign, what exactly do you do in Skull and Bones? Well, the Indian Ocean is full of opportunities. “It is definitely not a storyline-driven game,” says Barnard. “You don't finish Skull & Bones and have credits and a cutscene at the end. You can do all of this solo, but Skull and Bones is a shared world game with up to 20 players on each server.

Ubisoft has claimed that post launch content for Skull and Bones will be free, which is promising, although this may only apply to live-service events. Take a look at Skull and Bones gameplay in action, and perhaps even place your pre-order, as we wait for the Ubisoft game's release date this November.

There is another Skull and Bones trailer for you to check out, as well. There's no sign of a Steam release for Skull and Bones as of yet. Ubisoft has said, "The game is inspired by one of the deadliest periods in history – the end of the 17th century. Likewise, there are no announced plans for a Nintendo Switch version of Skull and Bones. From accepting contracts, gathering resources, to navigating important trade routes and attacking wealthy merchant ships, each decision will influence their journey, with varying levels of risk and reward."

Skull and Bones character creation – does it have it? (The Loadout)

Ubisoft's swashbuckling action RPG is on the way, but will you be sailing perilous waters as yourself? Does Skull and Bones have character creation options?

Well, that’s everything we know about character creation in Skull and Bones right now – expect to see more closer to launch. At the moment, there isn’t a lot of information available as to the extent of what this character creation will be, but we’ve seen several playable pirates with different appearances in the latest Skull and Bones gameplay footage. With quest-giving vendors, more than enough open sea to explore, and the promise of exciting PvP content, it seems like character creation in Skull and Bones is a given.

How the Skull and Bones Studio is Building A Culture Of Creativity (Ubisoft)

Ubisoft Singapore's Managing Director Darryl Long shares how it is building a supportive environment that encourages creativity and empowers teams to make ...

We have all the ingredients here in Singapore to deliver on these ambitions, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us. DL: We first built our shared strategy a year and a half ago, but we've continued to evolve with the input of our studio leaders and the people making the games. The game is inspired by events in the Indian Ocean at the end of the 17th century, which they call the Golden Age of Piracy. And it's a cutthroat time, a cutthroat place. It's a live-service game - the idea is that you can keep playing this game for five to 10 years, and that's what we hope players will do. One of the initiatives we do at the studio is called Open Innovation, which is a program to give people the freedom to pitch a game and get their idea out there. We have the opportunity to reach so many players with our games, with something new and fresh. One of the internal programs that then came out of that was what we call Power Up, which is a targeted series of trainings and workshops to support women and help them develop more quickly in their careers and become the leaders of the future. There's been a lot of recognition of their efforts, and we've been happy to see two employees listed among the top 100 Women in Tech for Singapore over the past two years. For all surveys, we share the results openly with the studio, and the insights teams offer help to fuel our strategy and action plan. There's been a lot of investment in nurturing that environment over the last year and a half. So, I got in front of the studio at a town hall and said, "Listen, we've heard you, and we're going to share where we're at." From my discussions with the teams, I had two main takeaways: the first was that it was a wonderfully creative and talented studio who was counting on me to be open and listen.

Skull And Bones' Cluttered UI Revives Elden Ring Ubisoft Meme (Screen Rant)

The new Skull and Bones gameplay trailer has revived a hilarious Elden Ring meme that made fun of Ubisoft's tendency to design cluttered UIs.

The new gameplay footage of Skull and Bones has prompted many players to remember the Ubisoft Elden Ring meme. A new gameplay trailer for Skull and Bones was released this week, and the UI revealed for the game has reminded many players of an Elden Ring meme from earlier this year. On the other side of the coin UI-wise, Elden Ring sparked both praise and confusion with its minimalistic UI when it released earlier this year - many fans enjoyed the exploration-based approach that offered players no hand-holding, while some expressed a desire for the game to give more guidance.

Fans say Skull and Bones' messy UI looks like Elden Ring meme ... (Dexerto)

Ubisoft's recent gameplay reveal for Skull and Bones showcased a cluttered UI that revived the Elden Ring UI meme from earlier in the year.

Icons and written instructions coat every corner of the screen. On July 7, Ubisoft finally lifted the veil on Skull and Bones in a stream showcasing gameplay for the first time. Memes boasting an Elden Ring screenshot littered with a host of intelligible icons began flooding the internet as a consequence.

'Skull & Bones' will release on the Epic Games Store this November (NME.com)

Ubisoft's upcoming pirate simulator 'Skull & Bones' will be releasing this November on the Epic Games Store, and not on Steam.

A lot more was gleaned from the Skull & Bones showcase in addition to the release date. Higher infamy also means NPC privateer pirate-hunters will hunt you more vigorously, one of the several dangers that players can face in Skull & Bones. The game is very ship-focused, and there is no hand-to-hand combat in the game.
