Taylor Fritz is into his first major quarterfinal, ever and Nick Kyrgios is back in the Wimbledon quarters for the first time in eight years.
“He came firing in the fourth set, his level didn’t drop. I’ve been here before, I’ve done it before and I came through.” The crowd was amazing. “First, I want to say helluva an effort by Brandon,” Kyrgios said. He will next face Cristian Garin of Chile, who came from two sets down and saved two match points to beat Alex De Minaur, 2-6, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4, 7-6(10-6). No. 11 Fritz, the 6-foot-5 California native, easily handled Australian qualifier Jason Kubler 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career.

Halep is the lone woman left in the draw with major final experience. Asked about the shoulder, Kyrgios said he took painkillers and chalked it up to a lot of recent matches. “I need a glass of wine for sure tonight.” I’d say probably it feels about the same as like a Slam quarterfinal,” said Fritz, who hasn’t faced a top-50 player through four rounds. “There was a time where I was having to be forced out of a pub at 4 a.m. to play Nadal second round,” in 2019, he said. “I came on court when he was two sets to love up, so I was actually expecting to play him.” Nakashima, a 20-year-old ranked No. 56, was bidding to become the youngest U.S. man to make a major quarterfinal since Andy Roddick in 2003. “It was a low point,” he said. “It wasn’t anywhere near my best performance,” said Kyrgios, who took a medical timeout for the shoulder in the third set, when he received treatments during multiple changeovers. American Taylor Fritz is playing the best tennis of his life, will it be enough to upset Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon Quarterfinals?
For Kyrgios, this seems like a prime opportunity after taking out Stefanos Tsitsipas though he did struggle physically against Brandon Nakashima. The two days’ rest will do both players a world of good and though Garin will certainly look to make the match a grind, I just cannot see Kyrgios letting this opportunity slip away. However, it does still feel that beating Nadal in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, particularly because it is his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, might be a bridge too far for the American. Nadal in 5 Kyrgios had to dig deep to win his last two matches and it is encouraging to see that he was able to do that, even if his behaviour during both was not. I can’t see any way Kyrgios loses this match with this big a chip on his shoulder. Taylor Fritz doesn’t present much of a match-up issue unless he is serving out of his mind.
