What would change if we dropped the hierarchy, and empowered everyone to show up as equals? Dadirrie is the Indigenous practice of deep and respectful listening. The gift of giving without the expectation of getting is a powerful thing. How would our industry change for the better if we sought some of these answers through the cultural lens of our First Nations peoples? Most of you know me as Phil. I was born in Damaragal Country and I now live on Cameragal Country. I am a mum, a daughter, a sister, a wife and a passionate ally. And our people are telling us that they seek more than a bump in cash, they seek meaning, a sense of belonging, purpose and connection.

For me, this year’s NAIDOC week theme is about how as an Indigenous man I can take action and make a difference. It’s cool to see how you can go from being a student learning from the engineers to being that person who presents to the students. It was interesting to think I can be a part of a project like that. There’s a bunch of different Indigenous art going in there that needs to be preserved and kept safe. In high school, I was good at math and physics and a teacher suggested engineering. My favourite project is the new Indigenous Cultures Centre, Tarrkarri, which is being built in Adelaide. It is great to be able to work on something that connects my engineering passion with my culture.

My dream screen industry job is to one day be a Production Manager or a Producer. Every day I am gaining new knowledge and advancing my skills within my current position as a Production Coordinator at Channel 44. What I like best about working in the screen industry is the team – the whole team. Currently, my main focus is on a show called Mob Talks – a show created out of Channel 44 by Keith Gilbey-Warrior and Rick Hutcheson, who were also a part of the SAFC and Channel 44 First Nations Internship program.
