Wallabies vs England

Wallabies meet old foes England with victory more important than ever (The Guardian)

There may well be a golden decade coming for the Australian game's administrators, but it won't matter if the Wallabies aren't winning.

Win and the path is a brick road of Wallaby gold, a ramp to a World Cup title shot. Fall to the old foe again and a thousand miles of bad road lies ahead, all littered with dead rabbits. With a 40% win rate from his 20 Tests, Rennie badly needs to hold this inaugural Mobbs-Ella Trophy. Will he storm the enemy’s machine gun nest as Mobbs did at Ypres in 1917 and pass into everlasting glory? Hooper is a lionheart at the ruck and a dervish in open play. England will pump the sidelines and expose Australia’s lineout, leaving Porecki, a Waratah, throwing to two Brumbies in Swain and Neville. Bell is a target at the set piece, having given away 18 penalties in Super Rugby this year, mostly for scrum collapses. Ill-discipline will kill any Wallaby momentum and court death by a thousand kicks from Owen Farrell who nailed 23 from 26 attempts in 2016 to lead the whitewash, despite Australia scoring more tries in two of three Tests.

Live: Wallabies out to end Eddie's eight match winning streak against 'confident' England.

We’re not looking for anything less than a win, but we’re expecting a very tough, tough game. It all started with a 3-0 series whitewash Down Under in 2016. “It’s an area that we feel if we can overshadow them, then it gives us an opportunity to get our game going and put a bit of heat on at the right end of the field. “They’ll want to scrum and maybe scrum for penalties to get territory and put us in the corner or kick for the posts. “We know games of these magnitude and intensity it’s going to go back and forth quite a bit and we have to stay in the fight, throw punches, absorb then get on the front foot and apply pressure. “We just need to get a couple of wins under the belt, mini wins in the game,” he told reporters on Friday in Perth.

Australia v England: first rugby union Test – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: The Wallabies host tourists England in Perth for the opening Test of the series. Join Jonathan Howcroft.

While for the Wallabies, Dave Rennie was appointed over two years ago but there remains a feeling his side is still in transition. However, victory in Perth would see the Wallabies leapfrog England on the world rankings. Taniela Tupou failed to recover in time from a calf injury but may feature later in the series. But it’s an unfamiliar pack featuring two debutants, including 33-year-old lock Cadeyrn Neville. In the backs, Samu Kerevi and Marika Koroibete offer a formidable presence that is sure to be used to punch holes in England’s defence. Will it be enough to put England to the sword? Sounds simple enough on paper but lest we forget they did not have Samu Kerevi lining them up back in November and it is a surefire bet they will see plenty of the Australia centre in the coming weeks. Kurtley Beale is out injured, Reece Hodge and Matt To’omua were not selected in the 35-man squad, and James O’Connor didn’t make the 22. Plenty of attention will fall on the playmakers with the recalled veteran Danny Care in the No 9 jersey feeding the Marcus Smith-Owen Farrell axis that looks set to determine England’s short-term future. Neville was first selected in an Australian squad a decade ago but, until now, has never actually made it on to the field. The British & Irish Lions are due in 2025, the 2027 and 2029 World Cup tournaments were secured in May and the Olympics is coming to Brisbane in 2032. When a high bomb is hoisted his way there are few better equipped to defuse the aerial danger. But try telling that to the host nations.

The conversion is good. Ireland have kicked more though (11 kicks to nine). All Blacks win a penalty but lose the lineout The All Blacks win a scrum penalty while camped down their own end. Ireland also lack a bit of polish at the lineout. Ireland attempt a sharp set play down the left wing from the back of a scrum but there’s a knock-on. A massive 20-minute period here from the All Blacks just before half-time to take all the momentum. New Zealand hit the lead. Try is set up by a nice palm from Sevu Reece and a bit of a break down the left edge from Leicester Fainga’anuku. Ireland cough the ball up before All Blacks winger Sevu Reece scoops on a loose ball. Wallabies lock Darcy Swain red-carded for apparent headbutt (Rugby.com.au)

Wallabies lock Darcy Swain has been sensationally red-card for an apparent headbutt during the first Test against England.

It capped off a remarkable half for the Wallabies, who had lost Quade Cooper in the warm-up to a calf injury. This sent the Brumby into a state of rage, squaring up to the Sale enforcer before leading with his head as play continued. As the two wrestled, Hill grabbed the hair of Swain as he looked to prevent the turnover.

Wallabies player ratings vs England | 1st Test July 2022 (RugbyPass)

The Wallabies survived by the skin of their teeth to record a famous 30-28 victory. How did they rate in the victory?

Was instrumental in organising lineout and attacking mauls close to the try line. Finished a fantastic multi-phase effort from the Wallabies to put the game beyond doubt. Subbed on in the 67th minute and his first lineout throw was a good one. Was perfect off the boot and kept the Wallabies in touch. Came off his wing to make runs and found gaps in the English defence. What was most impressive from the centre was his ability to kick for touch and get into English territory. Was every around the park and was one of the Wallabies’ best. Was red-carded for a headbutt on Johnny Hill after the England lock pulled his hair in a maul. Won a couple of crucial turnovers to get the Wallabies out of trouble. Quade Cooper was a late withdrawal, forcing the Wallabies to start Noah Lolesio and put James O’Connor on the bench. A spirited fightback allowed the Wallabies to gain ascendancy for most of the second half with late tries to Jordan Petaia, Folau Fainga’a and Pete Samu. The Wallabies did well to gain the lead early in the second half before England clawed it back.

Wallabies unearth new fullback as young gun stars after last-minute ... (Fox Sports)

Darcy Swain was shown a red card after 34 minutes. Quade Cooper was a late scratching after injuring his calf in the warm-up and fullback Tom Banks (broken arm) ...

The scrum edged England and he was strong in defence and around the field. Bell was superb in his 54 minutes on the field. He might have been pinged once for hands in the ruck, but it was a good penalty to give away. He was out there for 75 minutes and his quick service, box kicking and work on the ball was pivotal in their win. He got on the ball in the 15th minute after Jonny Hill made a turnover. He also took the line on in the 77th minute and made 10m. Concussed in the 25th minute. For many, being called in at the last minute would have been a leap too far. Eddie Jones might have poked fun at Kerevi’s kicking game, but largely it was effective with one raking kick in the 37th minute a beauty. Dave Rennie believes Koroibete is the best winger in the world. Safe under the high ball, Kellaway showed all the awareness of a 50-match fullback. For Wallabies teams of the past they would have rolled over.
