Celtics Made 2023 NBA Title Favorites After Malcolm Brogdon Trade (Sports Illustrated)

The Celtics are off to an impressive start this offseason and have the tools to continue strengthening their rotation.

The Celtics likely aren't done adding, either. Of course, if the Suns swing a trade to pair Kevin Durant with Devin Booker and Chris Paul, it could tilt the title odds in their favor. Boston's also the reported landing spot for Danilo Gallinari once he gets bought out by the Spurs and clears waivers.

And to change significant pieces in the group doesn't mean that that might not totally take your identity and shift it in a direction that's not as successful. But there's no question, in this league, the more guys that can make a play offensively, the better. ... We have to make sure that we continue to play with pace. They might not even be done, after all they still have a $17.1 million trade exception they got after sending off Evan Fournier to the Knicks. It’s clear that these Celtics aren’t content to just cross their fingers and hope. Above all else, these moves proved that this Celtics front office realizes that the team’s window to contend is as open as it will ever be and they are willing to spend. Now, the Celtics did give up yet another first-round pick in the deal, albeit a Top-12 protected one, and that might end up being the Pacers’ biggest prize.

Celtics Address Multiple Needs with Malcolm Brogdon Trade (CalBearsMaven)

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston is acquiring Malcolm Brogdon in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick, Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, Malik Fitts, ...

And at six-foot-five, Brogdon brings more size to a team with a starting lineup filled with players tall for their position. The now-former Pacer's generating 15.5 points per game for his career, producing 19.1 last season and 21.1 the year before. In 2020-21, he launched 6.7 threes per contest and converted them at a 38.8 percent clip. He averages 4.2 rebounds per game for his career, and he's corralled more than five each of the last two seasons after grabbing 4.9 in 2019-20. Provided the Celtics keep Marcus Smart, which seems likely, adding Brogdon solves multiple needs for Boston. He's a reliable ball-handler, including under pressure, who's never averaged more than 2.4 turnovers. He also gives the Celtics more scoring off the bench.

Eddie House: What Malcolm Brogdon trade means for Marcus Smart (NBC Sports Boston)

Malcolm Brogdon adds depth to the Celtics' backcourt, but it also gives head coach Ime Udoka a decision to make with Marcus Smart.

He welcomed both Brogdon and forward Danilo Gallinari to the squad via Twitter on Friday. "I think what Marcus Smart does on the defensive end is invaluable, so you can't have him on the bench in crunch time because he's going to have to guard the best perimeter player on the other team. I think adding these pieces, you have an opportunity for these guys to show up.

NBA World Reacts to Malcolm Brogdon-Celtics Trade (CalBearsMaven)

One of the most notable trades of the NBA offseason so far was centered around former Virginia men's basketball star Malcolm Brogdon.

He captioned the post "One goal" with a trophy emoji: The defending Eastern Conference Champions will be an early favorite to make a return trip to the NBA Finals next season as they managed to land Brogdon while keeping their core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Robert Williams, as well as several key role players on the roster. We've collected some of the reactions from social media:

'Was it really the best Indiana could do?': Experts grade Pacers on ... (The Indianapolis Star)

"The Pacers could have done better here, but they're on their way to living in the depths of the lottery, and that's how they choose to reset."

Theis could get flipped, but if not, he’s a fine placeholder while the Pacers rebuild," Huff wrote. This was a decent enough move (albeit unspectacular) to get them where they want to go." Trades are complex negotiations and I’m sure they canvassed the league looking for some combination of young talent and draft capital," Pina wrote. The team found a deal they liked now, and moved on it. It also gives the Pacers enough cap space to sign a max-contract player in free agency. Waiting for the trade deadline could've helped, but it also might've backfired," he wrote.

Grabbing more young players is smart for the Pacers outlook long-term, but their return to being a postseason mainstay will take more than one offseason. Dealing Brogdon was a natural part of that undertaking for Indiana this summer, but not all of it. Theis is 30 years old, which is outside of the preferred age range for the youthful Indiana roster. He’s a fantastic screen setter, and his mobility keeps him in the right places on both ends of the floor. The German big man may not be worth as much to the Pacers, though. Indiana wants to transition into a new era. The biggest benefit is that the team now can hand the keys to the franchise to Haliburton, their big acquisition from the 2022 trade deadline. The now-younger Pacers squad did also acquire some valuable pieces in the deal. Right now, Indiana has three first round selections in the 2023 draft (their own, Cleveland’s, and now Boston’s). That’s a solid base of picks for the blue and gold to possess as the front office remakes the roster. Indiana brass will hope something similar can happen with Nesmith, who was a 2020 draft pick (as were Haliburton and Smith). The pick is top-12 protected, per Brian Robb of MassLive. There had been buzz during the weeks leading up to free agency that Brogdon could be on the move.

“Still, Boston’s title window is open now and adding Brogdon improves the chances of Boston hanging an 18th banner at TD Garden.” “After All-Star Dejounte Murray, Brogdon is probably the second-best player to change teams so far this NBA offseason,” Pelton wrote. “Just slowing the game down in those moments when we need to get a good shot.” “Wishin my teammates Aaron, Malik, Nik, Juwan the very best,” Smart wrote. Welcoming a new teammate in a trade means you likely have to say goodbye to hold teammates, though. I’m going to Boston and not worrying about that.”
