'Gobsmacked': Zoe Wakfer came to the draft to support her sister ... (The Age)

AFLW draft night has produced a fairytale story for new Eagle Zoe Wakfer, who was shocked and in tears as she walked to the stage after her name was called ...

The top Queensland prospect, Gee is a competitive and hard-working midfielder with a good mix of endurance and speed and will provide Gold Coast with pace. She attacks the ball and will provide depth to Carlton’s midfield and help move the ball forward, particularly with her impressive, penetrating kick. She hails from an athletics background and is still fresh to football but with pace and agility in her skill set, she’ll be a good investment for Sydney’s future. Involved in the first GWS academy pathways, she has already had a taste of professional football and now will join the Swans as a tall who can read the play well to strengthen their midfield group. A forward with good overhead marking ability, she’s a big game player that will add creativity and flair to West Coast’s forward line. The 178-centimetre Hamilton is a prolific ball-winner and fierce tackler who plays in the midfield but can roll forward to provide a marking target. Hipwell is tall, inside midfielder with good defensive qualities and the ability to provide a marking target, including overhead, when moving the ball forward. Baskaran, who finished runner-up in the NAB League Girls best and fairest, is an onballer with good footy IQ and the ability to read play. A lightning-quick midfielder/half-forward, Clarke won the NAB League Girls best and fairest award this season, was named in the NAB League team of the year, and clocked the fastest time at the 2021 NAB League Girls pre-season testing. The second player to go on the night was Fleming, taken by Hawthorn with their first pick in the Victorian draft. The Western Jet nominated for the NSW pool despite being from Victoria. The 18-year-old has been likened to Carlton’s Patrick Cripps, and is able to compete well in the air and at ground level. This year was the first to feature all 18 clubs, with expansion teams Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney welcomed to the competition.

2022 AFLW Draft, Pick 37: Heidi Woodley (Western Bulldogs)

The Western Bulldogs have welcomed speedy forward/midfielder Heidi Woodley with their third pick in the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft.

In her last four NAB League games, she proved her ability to produce strong numbers across the board and finished with a season-high effort of 25 disposals, six tackles, five inside 50s and a goal against Northern in the repechage round. With scope to rotate strongly through midfield or move out to a wing, Woodley has a good amount of upside. Having come in as a relative unknown compared to many of Vic Metro's midfield stars, Woodley found her spot up forward and caught the eye credit to her willingness to take the game on.

2022 AFLW Draft, Pick 29: Keely Coyne (Western Bulldogs)

The Western Bulldogs have drafted Sandringham Dragons midfielder Keely Coyne with their second selection, pick 29, in the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft.

It was a good showing for Coyne across the three games, averaging 14.3 disposals, two marks and 2.7 tackles for the carnival despite playing largely on the outside. She looks to move the ball forward more often than not, looking for inside-45 options or leading forwards rather than bombing long down the line or out of a pack. To aid that composure, Coyne has proven herself to be a good decision maker with ball in hand, knowing when to handball to an outside receiver and when to try a kick forward, where she would often spot teammates making leads even under pressure from opposition.

And we’ll be supporting them every step of the way.” Credit to our list and recruiting team who have been able to pull it together. “We had a really clear plan in bringing in the best available talent early in the pool and we have added some really quality talent. The 2022 AFLW Draft File (West Coast Eagles)

AFLW list manager Jordan Loxley provides an insight into each of the West Coast Eagles' draftees.

"Twin sister of Lauren, who has only been playing footy for the last 12 months. An extremely damaging outside midfielder, Britton has the speed and endurance to break open a game with an eye-catching ability to hit targets at speed. Exciting defender Zoe Wakfer may be a little raw - having played football for just 12 months - but caught the eye of recruiters with her composure and poise around the ball. A successful pre-season translated into a compelling 2022 campaign for Jaide Britton, with the 19-year-old working on her versatility and catching the eye of recruiters. Piecing together a solid campaign this year with elite speed and goal sense, the exciting mid-forward will be one to watch this season. Missed the chance due to illness but has come back and had a good back end of the year." "Really quick wing or half forward, who can also play in the backline if needed. Small midfielder Emily Elkington packs a punch in the cauldron, averaging nine tackles a game at the AFLW under-18 Championships while evading opponents with an impressive turn-of-foot. Her capacity to win the ball at stoppages and dispose cleanly makes her one of the most exciting tall players in this year's AFLW Draft. Covering plenty of ground and filling the stats sheet, Wakfer has been the top performing ruck in the West Australian draft pool. "Has improved sharply over the last 12 months, plays at Swan Districts, inside, outside midfielder with a really neat left foot kick. With high-level aggression at the ball and the ability to play in a number of positions across the ground, Roberts will be a fine addition to West Coast's younger cohort and is expected to make her debut in the upcoming season.
