'Gobsmacked': Zoe Wakfer came to the draft to support her sister ... (The Age)

AFLW draft night has produced a fairytale story for new Eagle Zoe Wakfer, who was shocked and in tears as she walked to the stage after her name was called ...

The top Queensland prospect, Gee is a competitive and hard-working midfielder with a good mix of endurance and speed and will provide Gold Coast with pace. She attacks the ball and will provide depth to Carlton’s midfield and help move the ball forward, particularly with her impressive, penetrating kick. She hails from an athletics background and is still fresh to football but with pace and agility in her skill set, she’ll be a good investment for Sydney’s future. Involved in the first GWS academy pathways, she has already had a taste of professional football and now will join the Swans as a tall who can read the play well to strengthen their midfield group. A forward with good overhead marking ability, she’s a big game player that will add creativity and flair to West Coast’s forward line. The 178-centimetre Hamilton is a prolific ball-winner and fierce tackler who plays in the midfield but can roll forward to provide a marking target. Hipwell is tall, inside midfielder with good defensive qualities and the ability to provide a marking target, including overhead, when moving the ball forward. Baskaran, who finished runner-up in the NAB League Girls best and fairest, is an onballer with good footy IQ and the ability to read play. A lightning-quick midfielder/half-forward, Clarke won the NAB League Girls best and fairest award this season, was named in the NAB League team of the year, and clocked the fastest time at the 2021 NAB League Girls pre-season testing. The second player to go on the night was Fleming, taken by Hawthorn with their first pick in the Victorian draft. The Western Jet nominated for the NSW pool despite being from Victoria. The 18-year-old has been likened to Carlton’s Patrick Cripps, and is able to compete well in the air and at ground level. This year was the first to feature all 18 clubs, with expansion teams Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney welcomed to the competition.

AFLW Draft Wrap (GWS Giants)

The GIANTS have continued to build their list for season seven of the NAB AFL Women's competition, following the addition of eight players at the 2022 NAB ...

We believe the group of players selected tonight really complement the strengths of the players already signed to our list. Season seven of the NAB AFLW competition is set to begin at the end of August. “Given the expansion of the competition this year, that is a real testament to both the staff and culture of the club. It was Gaffney’s speed that appealed to the GIANTS the most, with the recruitment team recognising that as a work on for the current list. With pick 64 (NSW pick seven) the GIANTS were quick to secure one of the best up-and-coming rucks in Fleur Davies. In the new era of the game, the state-based draft had both the GIANTS and the Swans competing for the talent within the NSW pool.

2022 AFLW DRAFT WRAP: How did your club fare? (The Inner Sanctum)

After the 2022 AFLW Draft was held at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday night, we break down all the selections and how each club fared.

Caitlin Matthews is a father-daughter recruit (Dean Matthews), who is a promising young defender selected by the Saints with their last pick. Now in Sydney Swans colours, Ham adds both a big body to the midfield and depth up forward, as at 180cm tall, she rivals AFLW rucks. There was little doubt who was going to be Sydney’s first pick, once Western Jets midfielder Montana Ham announced her intentions to join the NSW draft pool. At 179cm, the key forward from Williamstown will be a solid tall target for the Kangaroos to develop. The expansion club added strongly to its midfield depth, with two of the top prospects in Jasmine Fleming and Charlotte Baskaran joining the likes of Tilly Lucas-Rodd and Bridget Deed. Forward Mia Skinner comes back into the Cats AFLW side after a terrific season as deputy vice-captain of their VFLW side. Breaking out in the ruck at the end of the VFLW season, the Casey recruit will continue her development at the Hangar. Charlotte Blair is a midfielder that has a great ability to burst out of stoppages and carry the footy. Charlotte Taylor is a utility that was elevated from the Collingwood VFLW side after three games this season playing in the midfield. Keeley Skepper and Mia Austin come into the side after strong NAB League Girls seasons for the Murray Bushrangers and Eastern Ranges respectively. Charlotte Mullins is a developing midfielder who brings versatility and football smarts. She plays as an inside midfielder and winger, clean by hand and foot with her disposal being her weapon.

Lauren Wakfer was already the feel-good story of the AFLW draft when identical twin Zoe, who had planned to be her sister's support act, stole the show.

When asked how she had supported Lauren through her injury, Zoe quipped: “everything”. “I was following her [Lauren]. I was here tonight for her so to be called out as well was an even bigger surprise.
