'Pretty bleak' Saints hit shock record lows as 'brilliant' Swans march to victory: 3-2-1.

Brown lamented the “costly” nature of the call. “He hit one of the hardest men in the competition.” Nathan Buckley said the decision to penalise Gulden was “not great”. “We know the AFL is encouraging that kick on the inside, (but) it’s a very long 10 metres there.” “The Swans were impressive tonight, they just did not give the Saints a sniff,” Nick Riewoldt said. Sydney were up and about from the opening bounce, while St Kilda were “predictable” and lacked “fluency”. “The Saints can’t go meekly here, not after the loss to the Bombers,” McLachlan said. “He’s a really popular character amongst the group,” Bolton said. “The kick was extraordinary,” McLachlan said. The Saints managed just two goals to three quarter time – with one of those goals from a “poor” 50m decision. “As soon as you hit the head, it’s going to be looked at,” commentator Wayne Carey warned. Sydney have put a “disappointing” St Kilda to the sword at the SCG, running out 51-point winners on Saturday night.

Ruthless Swans crush Saints and set sights on finals (The Age)

The Swans have charged back into serious finals contention with a rampant victory over a demoralised St Kilda at the SCG on Saturday night.

Tim Membrey was given a 50m penalty midway through the quarter for St Kilda’s second and last goal before half-time. Medisub for two games earlier this season without making it onto the ground, Clarke snapped the first goal of the game after 10 minutes of solid pressure by both sides. A 51-point win has left the Swans in sixth place and kept the Saints out of the final eight after St Kilda managed just four goals. A few minutes later Franklin did the finishing himself. “We were hunting, we were really strong in the contests. They had more possessions to half-time but little to show for it. “I thought we were a bit better but our ball use really hurt us. In perfect conditions before an energetic crowd the half-time score was 2.2 (14) to 4.6 (30) after the Swans kicked 1.5 in the second term. St Kilda’s only first-quarter goal was from a free kick to Dan Butler and the Saints did not look like scoring a goal for much of the second term. Much of the first half was a war of attrition, with the Saints in particular pushing back to defend. “Early in the game our pressure was outstanding,” Longmire said. The Swans finished with 12.11 (83) to St Kilda’s 4.8 (32).

Super Swans put Saints to the sword in SCG domination (Sydney Swans)

The Sydney Swans have secured a convincing 51-point victory over St Kilda in Pride Game at the SCG tonight (Saturday, June 25, 2022).

It was a good sign of the Swans' midfield depth. St Kilda's 2.6 at three-quarter time was the club's lowest tally to that point since 2014. Sydney has belted a hapless St Kilda by 51 points to consolidate its push for a finals spot. Saints captain Jack Steele was impressive on his return for the first time since sustaining an AC injury in round nine with 27 disposals and eight touches. St Kilda: Darragh Joyce (unused) Callum Mills and Luke Parker have arguably been the leading contributors to Sydney's strong 2022, but both were below their usual standards, yet the Swans still controlled the game despite no glaring discrepancies among the team statistics with 388-373 possessions and 55-45 inside 50s.

The draw doesn’t get any easier for the Saints, with Carlton, Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs in the next three rounds in what will be a decisive month for the red, white and black. Speaking on AFL.com.au’s The Round So Far Cornes said the combination of flailing form and a difficult draw could spell disaster for the Saints' season. The 83-32 loss to the Swans was the third defeat in a row for Brett Ratten’s men, after finishing Round 11 in fourth position at 8-3.

Sydney tightened their grasp on a top-eight spot with a 51-point thumping of fellow finals contender St Kilda at the SCG.

They defended really well and to keep them to two goals until about 10 minutes to go was outstanding," Swans coach John Longmire said. "It's a sign of [Sinclair] going pretty well. While the win lifts the Swans to a 9-5 record, the Saints slumped to their third consecutive loss since the bye and tumbled out of the top eight for the first time since round three.

“It’ll be good to have Peter available again. “We know they can be a really strong, attacking team, they can score heavily, their midfield can run in waves, and so we will prepare for their best and make sure that we understand what we do well as well.” “It’s a great credit to him to play 250 games and continue to be at the forefront of pushing our younger players through and being a really good role model for them.” “Luke’s probably been the epitome of that ... you generally know what you’re going to get, which is a real contest and effort and play the game the right way. “You actually have to pick the right balance in the team and sometimes you get it right, sometimes you don’t ... and we also have to make sure that ‘Hick’s’ pulled up well and is able to get through a full week of training.” “He’s been a very consistent player, a fantastic leader of the footy club and I think one of the biggest raps you can give a player is when they run out of the race, you know what you’re going to get every week.

Papley goals milestone (Sydney Swans)

Tom Papley reached his 200th Swans goal in Saturday night's win over St Kilda.

He was also a member of the 1909 premiership side. Johnson, a 136-gamer who kicked 385 goals from 1923-31 and topped the club goal-kicking six years in a row, was the second Swans player to 200 goals, followed by Pratt in 1933. Nash, who reached 200 goals in his sixth season in 1945 after seven years out of the game during the Second World War, is the oldest player to 200 goals, three days after his 35th birthday.

Key Quotes: John Longmire Press Conference, Round 16 (Sydney Swans)

Following Sydney's 51-point victory over St Kilda, John Longmire speaks to the media about upcoming potential team changes, Isaac Heeney, Luke Parker's ...

I’m not going to sit here today and say I do support it or don’t support it, other than the fact that if it was to be looked at let’s make sure we do the right amount of research which I’m sure would happen. We’ll continue to use him in a number of different roles because we think that’s the best way to use him, and that’s the way to keep him involved in the game, keep him around the ball and of course the number one priority is what’s best for the team. Every week when he runs out of the race, you generally know what you’re going to get – which is a real contest and effort and play the game the right way. One of the biggest wraps you can give a player is that when they run out of the race, generally you know what you’re going to get every week. He was for the first five or six weeks there, he was probably one of the really top players going around and it’s hard to maintain that during the course of the year. You have to pick the right balance in the team, and sometimes you get it right, sometimes you don’t. This week we’ll look at what the mix looks like and make sure Hick has pulled up well and was able to get through a full week of training.
