Detroit Pistons acquire Kemba Walker, No. 13 pick Jalen Duren in ... (USA TODAY)

The Detroit Pistons acquired Kemba Walker in a deal that also landed them No. 13 overall pick Jalen Duren out of Memphis.

In Wednesday's trade with Portland, the Pistons dealt Jerami Grant for a 2025 first-round pick via the Bucks — protected 1-4 — two future second-round picks and a swap of second-round picks in Thursday's draft. The move gave the Pistons the most cap space in the NBA at around $43 million, with the potential to become more than $50 million. Walker, 32, has fallen off the past few seasons. He has played mostly center but can play power forward if he develops his 3-point shot. The Pistons are also taking on Kemba Walker, who has one year and $9.2 million remaining on his contract, and are sending a 2025 first-round pick from Milwaukee, acquired one day earlier, to the Hornets. The Detroit Pistons general manager has agreed to a second trade in as many days, acquiring Memphis freshman center Jalen Duren with the 13th pick from the Charlotte Hornets in a three-team deal with the New York Knicks, the Detroit Free Press has confirmed.

What Jalen Duren brings to the Detroit Pistons (The Athletic)

Duren has looked the part of an NBA big man for several years. Now he gets to prove his raw skills can translate.

Watch him walk across the stage of the draft and he looks like a man who’s a finished product. In time, he opted to transfer to Montverde (Fla.) High School, one of the premier prep schools in the country. The year ended with the Tigers underperforming, in regards to some grandiose expectations, but still managing a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They put a second-round scare into Gonzaga before losing 82-78. Per hoop-math, about 73 percent of Duren’s field goals came at the rim, and 35 percent came via (mostly short) jumpers. Duren has always been a talent who looks and feels older than he is. Duren is from Philadelphia. He became one of the best big man prospects in the country while at fabled Roman Catholic High School, one of the city’s historical basketball powers. What probably goes unnoticed or undervalued, though, is Duren’s ability as a passer. But like all other physical specimens, he was relegated to playing among his own age for a time. Everything Duren was billed to be was as-advertised and on full display. In reclassifying and committing to Memphis, Duren went for the buzz, but possibly not the best fit for his single season of college development. There were times not too long ago, when many saw Duren as a potential top-three overall pick. Yet, there was Jalen Duren last season, a shade over 18 years old, manhandling anyone and everyone.

The confusing Jalen Duren trade created peak chaos on NBA Draft ... (SB Nation)

What exactly did this trade end up being? · Charlotte Hornets receive · New York Knicks receive · Detroit Pistons receive

If the Hornets are able to retain Miles Bridges with the money they saved in this deal, and pick up a couple of promising rotational players with their bevy of picks — they’ll be thrilled. This move was made with a tacit understanding that the Pistons’ window is opening and a desire to make big moves now. This seems to center on New York’s desire to clear cap space so they can sign Jalen Brunson from the Mavericks or even Kyrie Irving now. It felt like New York was past this strategy. It soon emerged that the trade for Jalen Duren was complicated, involving three teams, a veteran player, picks flying all over the place and questions lingering on why everyone even did this. It’s here everything went wild, with a huge confusing trade involving the Hornets, Knicks and Pistons — one that fans are still trying to work out today.

Jalen Duren has what can't be coached, Detroit Pistons eager to ... (Detroit Free Press)

Jalen Duren has been on the fast track to stardom for years. Now that he is in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons are ready to develop him.

"I worked out for the Pistons, they were my first pre-draft workout," he said. "I did take a visit, didn't end up going until the next year but the relationship was already starting to grow. "It's a great relationship with (Rasheed)," Duren said. "I told him there’s three ways he stays on the floor this year or gets on the floor," Casey said. It's all part of the growth process that Casey is mapping out for the youngest player in this year's draft. That goes back to his days at Kentucky when he was recruiting athletes. Those three things will get him on the floor. "For me, I fell in love with the organization, and from there, I actually told my agent this is where I wanted to be. "My sophomore year, Cade was a senior and he reached out and was very interested in me, that's when I first met him and he expressed that he wanted me to come that year," Duren said. "I'm definitely ready to be here, embrace the organization, embrace the city, and I'm ready to get started." That's why Casey has a plan for Duren — for the big man to be the "roller" when operating the pick-and-roll with Cade Cunningham, as opposed to a pick-and-pop guy. "I wouldn't call it rushing, or hurrying; every move I made, I always made because it was best for me," Duren said Friday, shortly after he was introduced with Jaden Ivey as the newest members of the Detroit Pistons. "Reclassifying from high school, I felt like it was time to be in college, and leaving college, I felt like it was time to be in the NBA.
