Long-serving Labor minister Jacinta Allan has been appointed Victoria's deputy premier under a factional deal, backed by Premier Daniel Andrews.
He said there hadn’t always been a “balance” from the left and right in the leadership teams of previous Labor governments. “I will be here to get the job done. It’s a handful of votes in a handful of seats. Andrews said he would ring the new ministers to tell them which portfolios they had received. Caucus was under pressure to elect a woman to the role, but Allan is from the premier’s social left faction, which now has control of Victorian Labor’s top two roles. Hawthorn MP John Kennedy had earlier emerged from the caucus meeting to confirm Allan had been chosen as deputy premier.
Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Saturday morning Ms Allan, the member for Bendigo East, was elected to the position following a Labor Party caucus meeting.

Allan was endorsed unanimously by the Victorian Labor caucus to replace James Merlino ahead of the November state election.
