The Pistons will get a 2025 first via the Milwaukee Bucks.

To that end, it's worth noting that the team is dangling the No. 7 pick to try and add a veteran. A first-round pick three years down the road means much more to a rebuilding Pistons team than it does to a Blazers team trying to win now. At first glance, this seems like a low return for Grant, and it's fair to wonder if the Pistons could have gotten more in return from a desperate contender if they had moved him at last season's trade deadline. The first step was to go out and acquire Grant, who Lillard has been advocating for, per Wojnarowski. Grant should be a perfect fit as a versatile forward who will immediately improve their porous defense and can take some of the offensive responsibility off of Lillard's shoulders. The Pistons got a bunch of extra draft picks for someone who was never going to be part of their plans long-term. Grant is entering the final year of his contract and was not a long-term piece for the rebuilding Pistons who will now forge ahead with Cade Cunningham and $43 million in cap space for free agency.

Jerami Grant trade details: Trail Blazers acquire forward from ... (Sporting News AU)

The Trail Blazers have acquired scoring forward Jerami Grant from the Pistons for a future first-round pick.

In my latest Mock Draft, I had the Blazers selecting Baylor freshman Kendall Brown – a defensive-minded athletic freak – with the No. 36 pick. There are a handful of talented players who could fall out of the first round and Detroit has a chance to add another quality young piece with that selection. In my latest Mock Draft, I have the Blazers landing G League Ignite guard Dyson Daniels with that selection. As ESPN's Bobby Marks alluded, they also clear cap space and have approximately $43 million to work with following the trade. Grant gives the Blazers a veteran player who fits Lillard's win-now timeline. He has one more year remaining on that deal – set to make $20.96 million next season – before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2023.

The Portland Trail Blazers receive Jerami Grant in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick and future draft capital, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski says.

Grant immediately slots in as their best defensive player. While they could have gotten a greater return for a player of Grant's caliber, this moves sets the Pistons up to make a splash in the offseason. It also provides them a versatile defensive player who can cover multiple positions. The Suns can match any offer for Ayton, but the Pistons will look to force their hand and overpay for the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Grant signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the Pistons in 2020 in search of a larger role on offense and while the Pistons didn't win a ton of games, he proved to be a capable two-way option as the focal point of their offense. Along with a $21 million trade exception, the Pistons have freed up $43 million in cap space as they look to add more talent around 2021 No. 1 pick and Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey and Marvin Bagley III.

The Pistons now have somewhere around $44 million in space available this summer, with free agency set to start in about a week. With a focus on revamping the roster, Rip City brings Damian Lillard a nice complimentary piece in Jerami Grant in a win-now move for the playoffs.

With the acquisition of Grant, the Trailblazers now give Lillard a pick-and-roll partner plus an inside presence that the team has been lacking for some time. Grant is set to make $20.95 million this coming season in the final year of his three-year, $60 million contract that he signed with Detroit in 2020 free agency. The pick, initially owned by Milwaukee that Portland traded away is top-four protected, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

For Joe Cronin, the new general manager, this is a significant move. “This is a player Lillard has been really high on.
