'The Umbrella Academy' review: Hargreeves siblings face off against ... (Mashable)

The third season of Netflix's "The Umbrella Academy" may be the show's best outing yet, but it falls into the patterns of its predecessors.

Despite this, the third season of The Umbrella Academy is a winner, one that Brellies everywhere will enjoy. Don't get me wrong, those are still engaging tropes (and I love a good dance party), but after three seasons, it makes you wonder about the direction of the show — especially when we don't have closure on questions that were raised in Season 2 and even Season 1. This Ben is a far cry from the one we grew to know and love. Lucky for us, Season 3 avoids that pitfall (for the most part), keeping the Hargreeves' adventures feeling fresh with powerful new character developments and a fun set of villains to face off against. Among the season's biggest developments is Viktor's (Elliot Page) transition, which the show addresses early on and treats with an immense amount of care. The Umbrella Academy is back, reuniting us with the superpowered Hargreeves siblings and their super-sized daddy issues.

Who would win: Sparrow Academy or Umbrella Academy? (Polygon)

In Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 1, we see the Umbrella and Sparrow academies fight. But who would win in an actual showdown of the two Hargreeves ...

What are their powers? The showdown: Viktor has almost ended the world twice, and that was without even really trying. Christopher can manipulate the temperature of a room, tase people (basically), and also induce fear into the minds of beings. In a fight, Jayme — who also benefits from the Sparrow training regimen — should be able to avoid Ben’s tentacles and get an opportunity to spit on him. What are their powers? Like the Sparrow version, Ben is able to summon tentacles with his body. Who’s to say, but I think if Allison was just able to talk at all and was focused/had her killer instinct enough, it’d be an easy win. Diego is able to manipulate the trajectory of anything he throws, as well as anything thrown at him — including bullets. Since this is a one-on-one showdown, we’re also assuming a world in which Umbrella Ben is alive and well, just for numbers’ sake. But in a showdown between individual members of the group, who would win? With a six-on-seven brawl, there’s a lot of moving parts. This is the Sparrow Academy, and they operate like a well-oiled machine (at least from the outside).

As the episode ends, the blob sends a shockwave across the city, apparently obliterating both Marcus and one very cute dog at the Hotel Obsidian. After all, what would a new season of The Umbrella Academy be without another apocalyptic threat? For now, at least, open warfare doesn’t serve anybody, which is good news for anyone who wants to know more about the Sparrows than their superpowers (and good news for Netflix’s stunt budget because that opening fight looked expensive). It’s Vanya, with characteristic pragmatism, that negotiates a détente. When Marcus comes in with threats, Vanya offers a calm but firm reply: “I don’t think you’re better than me, Marcus. I ended the world twice. But as fun as it is to watch this family bicker, the Sparrows still pose a threat. This is an ideal location for characters like Five and Diego to argue about what they should do next and for Allison and Vanya to swap memories and sympathies about the lovers they left behind in 1963. And while the Umbrellas put up a decent fight, they’re no match for the Sparrows. When the dust settles, our heroes run away to lick their wounds, leaving their very useful time-travel briefcase behind.

<i>The Umbrella Academy</i> Season 3 Ended On Another ... (ELLE.com)

We've got good news and bad news about season 4 of the popular Netflix sci-fi series. Here's everything we know about the next chapter.

Because Volume 4: The Sparrow Academy has yet to release in print, any speculation over how its contents might influence season 4 is moot. But it’s not unreasonable to suspect season 4 wouldn’t arrive until 2023, given the numerous cast members participating and the significant visual effects involved. well, a Netflix, and cancels the series before it’s had the chance to resolve its arc. Here’s everything we know about season 4 of The Umbrella Academy. But this new doomsday isn’t just the end of the world; it’s the collapse of the entire universe, courtesy of a “Kügelblitz” initiated by the Umbrella Academy’s impossible presence in an alternate dimension. After returning from 1960s Dallas to the present day only to find their erstwhile father championing a new troupe of super-heroic cadets, the Umbrella Academy team join forces—sort of—with this so-called Sparrow Academy in an attempt to prevent another doomsday.

Elliot Page says he feels 'proud' of his 'Umbrella Academy ... (USA TODAY)

Elliot Page's "Umbrella Academy" character Vanya transitioned to trans man Viktor in Season 3 parallel to the actor after he came out in 2020.

To me, it would be so special for us to all be able to connect and talk about how similar we all are." The actor added: "I feel like it's so unfortunate because we're all on the same team here, you know? I feel a way that I really never thought possible for a long, long time," Page said. The crew also brought trans author and journalist Thomas Page McBee on set where he "helped out" with bringing Viktor's story to fruition. "You don’t even notice the box that you’re in until someone comes along and lets you out," Sissy says. "But last time I checked, you don’t speak for this family."

How does Viktor come out as trans in The Umbrella Academy season 3? Fans are praising Elliot Page's storyline.

Another added: "2 episodes into season 3 of the umbrella academy and Elliot Page as Viktor already has me crying. Perhaps most importantly, while Viktor's family may each take a second to process his transition, there's no transphobia in The Umbrella Academy season 3 and each of his siblings accept him for who he is. Viktor 🙁: "You know, I always hated mirrors. Viktor then replies, "Yeah, I do" before Diego adds, "Good. You are." You're family, Viktor - and there's nothing that would make me love you less." Luther is the last sibling to find out about Viktor's transition, as he has been kidnapped by the Sparrow Academy and misses the brothers' conversation. Diego replies, "Who's Viktor?" and Viktor says: "I am. In a statement to The A.V. Club, Netflix confirmed that Elliot's character "will come out as transgender in season 3 and be henceforth known as Viktor Hargreeves". . Allison then asks what Viktor sees now and he replies: "Me. Just me." Cool." and Number 5 says, "Truly happy for you Viktor". We then see Viktor head to a barbershop, smiling as he sits in the barber's chair. In flashbacks, he remembers her saying to him: "You have given me the greatest gift of a lifetime.

What Happened In <i>The Umbrella Academy</i> Season 3 Finale ... (HarpersBAZAAR.com)

Umbrella Academy's Season 3 finale was full of surprises. What happened to Allison, Luther, Diego, Viktor, Five, Sloane, Ben, and Klaus in the final ...

The sigil features seven stars, and Reginald instructs seven of the Hargreeves children to stand on the markers. After all, Klaus suggests earlier in the episode that heaven looks different for everyone, and Allison has made it clear that her life is nothing without Claire and Ray. Only time will tell what has really happened to Allison, though, as anything can happen in The Umbrella Academy. Then her husband from the 1960s, Ray, appears in the doorway and says, "It's where you were always meant to be." Justifying the fact that "he's killing them," Reginald tells Allison, "Everything in life has a price." A red button appears on the screen, and despite her family begging her not to, Allison presses it. Seeing his anatomy, it's revealed that Reginald isn't human (something viewers already knew), and he falls to the floor dead. Luther tries to convince Klaus to return to save the rest of their family. Ghost Luther berates his father for leaving him on the moon for so long, and then killing him. In this timeline, Reginald adopted a completely different group of children, with Ben being the only member of both groups. Here's what happened in The Umbrella Academy's season 3 finale. Much of the drama takes place inside Hotel Obsidian, where the original Hargreeves siblings stay after finding themselves in a timeline in which they don't exist. Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy includes a plethora of WTF moments, but the finale really takes the cake.

The Umbrella Academy Recap: Love, Viktor (Vulture)

Each of the Umbrellas is decompressing after Dallas by taking a little time to figure out who they really are. A recap of 'The World's Biggest Ball of Twine ...

However reluctantly, Diego seems to be finding some purpose in being a dad to Stan (whose ability to throw knives so well probably doesn’t hurt). And Luther finds hope in his ongoing bond with Sloane, who — barring the possibility of a long-con honeypot scheme — seems to adore him and his stories about visiting the moon as much as she dislikes being a Sparrow. When they kiss at the end of the episode, it feels like the start of something they both desperately need. Is there a future for the Umbrellas in this specifically Umbrella-less world? But after following that arc for much of the first season, the TV show has gone on to suggest a vastly more hopeful path — one in which Viktor finally gets to define his life on his own terms. And as the rest of the world finds out who he is, too, it’s nice to see a pop-cultural trans story that is not characterized by prejudice, tragedy, or both. At a diner with Viktor, Allison flashes back to the racist diner owner from 1963. It’s interesting that this wasn’t the show’s original plan for the character — season three’s scripts were already finished when Page released his statement, which necessitated some rewrites — because, in many ways, it feels like Umbrella Academy has always been building up to this.

<i>The Umbrella Academy</i>'s Season 3 Finale Is Frustrating in All ... (ELLE.com)

Season 3 of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy ends on a massive cliffhanger. Here's what happened—and what it means for the Hargreeves kids.

“I left you to guard the most precious thing in the universe.” But Reg never tells him what—or, rather, who—that was. As a boy, I heard the legend of the seven bells.” If the bells are rung, “all will be restored just as it was.” Basically, “whoever or whatever” made the universe left a safeguard in place—a literal reset button—should the universe become a threat to itself. But if you’d rather not spend the next several hours tapping the rewind button, here’s a quick rundown of what seems to have just happened. Allison presses her palm to the button, and the universe powers down like a 1970s-era television set. Allison is the only one left sitting on the bench, and she’s forced to watch as this power—whatever it is—seems to eat her siblings alive, sucking up their insides and turning their skin dull and grey. We don’t know much about these guardians except that the “creator of the universe” put them in place to protect the reset button from those with nefarious intentions. Their tormenter is dead, but the kids are still in agony, and a Big Red Button has popped up on Reg’s screen. Instead, he calls the remaining family together to hunt for a “sigil,” one that will unlock the mythical “seven bells” that can reset the universe. Reg himself built the Hotel Obsidian around a portal that transports visitors to “the other side,” where it would seem the aforementioned seven bells reside. After finally believing he’d developed a trusting relationship with his abusive father, Klaus is devastated by Reg’s betrayal and impales himself on the horn of a taxidermic white buffalo in the Hotel Obsidian, ostensibly so as to preserve his physical form and return to life, pronto. After all, why return to the family that’s repeatedly rebuffed him, or the father who called him “more trouble than you’re worth”? But Luther appeals to Klaus’s intense need for validation—“I believe in you, brother”—and Klaus agrees to try reincarnating them, despite Luther’s motivational skills lacking Braveheart-level finesse. Episode 10 opens shortly after Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) plunges his tentacle-sword-arm into Luther’s (Tom Hopper) chest, then whips around and abandons Klaus (Robert Sheehan) to the devouring Kügelblitz, a black hole-like entity created by the impossibility of the Umbrella Academy’s existence in a reality where their mothers were killed before they were born.

<I>The Umbrella Academy</i> Meets Its Match in Season 3 (HarpersBAZAAR.com)

The Umbrella Academy returns to Netflix for season 3, and introduces the Sparrow Academy. But what super powers do all of the Hargreeves siblings have?

Much like Luther, Marcus is a literal force to be reckoned with, and his muscles do most of the talking. In terms of super powers, Sloane is able to control gravity, meaning that she's able to levitate and fly, and allow others to do so. Perhaps the most surprising member of the Sparrow Academy is Christopher, a telekinetic, psykronium cube that can induce paralysis, fear, existential dread, and freezing temperatures in any environment. Introduced in season 2, Lila Pitts is one of the 43 children born with superpowers in 1989. Also known as The Rumor, Allison Hargreeves can literally control people with the sound of her voice. Klaus is able to communicate with the dead as a medium, and he can also summon ghosts at his behest. In season 2, Viktor even resurrected Harlan, a drowned boy and the son of his girlfriend, by transferring some of his power to the boy. As a Sparrow, Ben's tentacle powers remain the same, but his changed personality means he's more competitive and negative, making him more of danger to those around him. Number Six played an important role in season 2, and maintained his ability to summon Eldritch Tentacles from a portal in his abdomen, albeit as a ghost. Also known as the White Violin in the originating comic book, Viktor is able to harness and manipulate sound and energy, redistributing it in a number of possible ways. And when it comes to Viktor's powers, it all starts with the manipulation of sound. The Sparrows appear to be much more organized than their Umbrella counterparts, and Reginald seems to believe that the group is far superior in every way.

Elliot Page said the showrunner of 'Umbrella Academy' was 'excited' to make his character, Viktor Hargreeves, trans after he came out in real life.

"[McBee’s] book and his work in general are so much about masculinity and what it means and exploring that,” Page said. Additionally, the show tapped journalist and author Thomas Page McBee — the first trans man to box at New York City’s Madison Square Garden — to consult on Viktor’s character arc. “It’s so unfortunate because it’s like, we’re all on the same team here.

Of all the superhero franchises Netflix has attempted to launch, “The Umbrella Academy” is easily its biggest hit. Viktor Hargreeves’ coming out is one of the best-handled storylines of the season, and provides a masterful “how to” guide in handling a transitioning family member. It may be an accident of fate that “The Umbrella Academy’s” best plotline came from something the universe threw at it. Since its first season, “The Umbrella Academy” has thrived on chaotic storylines, throwing around time traveling tales and multiverses like ping pong balls, and delighting in whichever way they landed. Most only lasted a season (“ Jupiter’s Legacy,” anyone?) or have flown under the radar, like “ Locke & Key.” It is also one of the few (if not the only) of Netflix’s superhero franchise legitimately able to challenge Marvel’s supremacy, at least more than certain DC films can claim. Three seasons in, the series is trying to do too much, and some of the show’s best moments are the ones it never saw coming.

In the absence of internal battles, external ones will need to do, and “Pocket Full of Lightning” offers more than a few. There’s no conflict The Umbrella Academy has ever introduced that’s as interesting as when the family itself is at odds.

The Umbrella Academy Recap: Out of Control (Vulture)

But as all these interpersonal dramas play out, it’s hard not to revisit a question that the Umbrellas themselves periodically pose: Does any of this really matter in the face of the apocalypse? • On the strength of his performance as a “sexy dad,” Lila and Diego hook up again. After some back-and-forth, Viktor goes from threatening Harlan to understanding him, mixed in with a fair amount of guilt, and decides to renege on his promise to his family and smuggle Harlan away before the Sparrows can get their hands on him. After a brief fight, Viktor confronts Harlan over the deaths of their mothers — an intriguing paradox in itself — and learns that Harlan killed them accidentally, unleashing the powers he acquired from Viktor in a failed attempt to connect with others like him. This is a genuinely startling violation of consent, and while she ultimately orders him to stop after a lengthy kiss, it’s clear things could have gone much, much further if she had willed it. But this odd little subplot is a useful microcosm for one of my biggest recurring frustrations with this series: Far too often, it feels as though even matters of life and death have no actual stakes.

Stan's around for the rest of the season, as Diego and some of the other Umbrellas look after him while trying to solve another apocalypse. He does get to help out Diego when the two run into some trouble. He also said that he's logged over 80 fights and hopes to go pro when he turns eighteen. He added that he got the role after only one audition, saying "I was the only kid pronouncing the drug names right." Javon "Wanna" Walton joined The Umbrella Academy in a secret role earlier this year, soon after his fan-favorite character Ashtray met a tragic fate in Euphoria's season 2 finale. Based on the comic book series by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the show follows a dysfunctional family of heroes as they stop the end of the world (after usually bringing it about themselves) in a new setting every season.

We meet Ben’s mother immediately before her immaculate conception on a similar subway in Korea. But we also probably shouldn’t sleep on the fact that the version of Ben we see on the train looks pretty different from the Sparrow version we spent Season 3 with. But, like all things in The Umbrella Academy, there’s a lot more to this moment than meets the eye. Why is Viktor so ready to forgive his sister for murdering a man who’s only crime was getting saved by the Umbrella Academy as a child? But why is everyone so willing to roll with the unforgivable things that she did in her grief? It’s just strange that Viktor and Luther are so willing to let bygones be bygones after two pretty unforgivable actions from their sister (and in one case, ex). Because of his connection to Viktor and the Umbrella Academy, it targeted all of their mothers before the Umbrellas could be born. Harlan (the young boy that Viktor saved in Season 2, accidentally giving him a piece of his powers, played by Callum Keith Rennie) returns this season much older and much more broken than we remember him. Most of the Sparrow Academy met pretty untimely ends (their Number One played by Justin Cornwell was done dirty, if you ask me) in Season 3. Season 3 put Allison and Viktor through the ringer. The Sparrow’s version of Ben, however, remains alive and well with the rest of his dysfunctional family. Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) snaps out of her loss-induced rage long enough to save her siblings, and Viktor (Elliot Page) decides not to wipe his sister out in favor of trusting her and hopefully repairing their incredibly damaged relationship. Giving the Hargreeves children the opportunity to explore and reflect on their own emotions and intentions rather than sniping at each other constantly gives the audience the opportunity to empathize more than they may have in the past.

Will There Be an 'Umbrella Academy' Season 4 on Netflix? (Decider)

Second sign, and very mild spoilers here, the third season ends on a game-changing cliffhanger. That's either a sign of confidence from showrunner Steve ...

Umbrella Academy was picked up for Season 2 about two months after Season 1 debuted, while there was a gap of about four months between the release of Season 2 and the Season 3 renewal. Based on all that, and production returning to a relative new normal, it’s possible a new season of The Umbrella Academy could debut about a year and a half from now, i.e. November or December of 2023. Still, there are a few promising signs that would indicate there will be a Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy. The first, and this might seem a little counter-intuitive for how shows get canceled, but Netflix did not announce Season 3 of Umbrella Academy as the final season. But will there be an Umbrella Academy Season 4 on Netflix? When could it premiere, if so? And now, you’re probably wondering when you can move on and watch The Umbrella Academy Season 4, particularly after that wild ending. Great news: you’ve finished The Umbrella Academy Season 3 on Netflix. You did it!

Elliot Page Opened Up About His 'Umbrella Academy' Character's ... (Them)

Page shared that showrunner Steve Blackman “seemed really excited about incorporating [Page's transition] into the show.” Page also brought the writer Thomas ...

“The times in my life where I was the most uncomfortable, where I was the most unwell — those were the times when I was the most angry and I was the most unkind to myself.” Page emphasized again that transition has “improved his life drastically,” and expressed a hope that those who “have an issue” with him “could maybe try and hear that and embrace that as well.” “What I want to focus on right now — and it's been so extraordinary — is the degree of joy that I feel, the degree of presence that I feel,” Page said. “So Thomas came on board and helped out and I feel proud of it and excited for people to see it.”

The Umbrella Academy season 3 timeline explained (GamesRadar+)

We've identified every year that makes an appearance and put them in chronological order, breaking down the key events – this should hopefully make things a ...

2019 is the present day, when the bulk of season 3's action takes place. After the Hargreeves are transported back to Dallas at different points of the early '60s in season 2, 1963 is the year in which they all manage to reconvene. As to why Luther went to the moon, he discovers in season 1 that his father never read any of the reports he sent back and the mission was merely to keep him out of the way. We know the identities of 14 of these children – the Umbrellas, the Sparrows, and Lila – but the remaining 29 remain a mystery. The Commission's headquarters are situated in the '50s, and 1953 is the year in which Lila (Ritu Arya) briefly visits them at the start of episode 7. This is the year the Hargreeves – and all the other superpowered children – were born.

The Umbrella Academy Recap: My Big Fat Apocalypse Wedding (Vulture)

If you had just one day left to live, how would you spend it? A recap of 'Wedding at the End of the World,' episode eight of season three of Netflix's 'The ...

So I was very much on Viktor’s side when he decides to be the bigger person and apologize for his role in everything that went wrong. Even Reginald Hargreeves shows up, albeit uninvited, and delivers a lovely toast to all his children: The ones he raised in this timeline and the ones he has accepted he raised in another one. Allison had every reason to be angry that Viktor lied to her — but in the end, she made an active and calculated choice to murder Harlan. The episode is structured around an event that promises a kind of defiant joy: the wedding of Luther and Sloane, who want to be formally bound together as they stare down the apocalypse. Or in other words: This is a hangout episode, designed mostly to give us a heavy dose of these characters before the plot inevitably overwhelms them in the one-two punch of the last two episodes. No one knows how to stop it (or, in Five’s case, if it should be stopped). Assuming we’re at the end of the line: How best to spend the time they have left?

The Umbrella Academy Is Back, Here's What to Remember Before ... (Gizmodo Australia)

Suspected to be terrorists by the U.S. government, the Umbrella Academy regroups for one last confrontation with the Handler (who is killed) and a renewed chance to return to 2019 using one of the Commission’s time-travelling briefcase. The story beats are easy to follow, and the stakes are too (that ticking clock leading up to doomsday!); it’s the perfect show to enjoy while letting your brain zone out a little. The big conflict arrives when Viktor’s long-dormant powers are awakened and are revealed to be the cause of the apocalypse. To escape season one’s apocalypse, the siblings time-travel with Number Five, but the plan — like virtually all Umbrella Academy plans — doesn’t go off without a hitch. Viktor’s anger exploded at the end of season one, and his frustration toward his siblings, his father, and the world in general caused the moon to shatter, in turn causing the first apocalypse. Eventually it’s revealed the second apocalypse will be triggered by Viktor (again), who’s tortured after he’s captured by the FBI; his powers flare and cause him to blow up the FBI office where he’s being held. In the 1960s, we learn Reginald is part of a group called the Majestic 12 that’s plotting the Kennedy assassination, an event that ties into The Umbrella Academy’s second apocalypse. The hulking Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper) once suffered a near-fatal accident and was saved by an experimental treatment that means he now has the torso of an ape. Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman) is a famous actress when we first meet her in season one and a civil rights activist in season two; her power, which she tries not to deploy, is a form of mind control that begins with her uttering the phrase “I heard a rumour.” In season two, an amnesiac Viktor has to re-learn about his relationships with all the other Hargreeves, as well as the scope of his powers. Season three of The Umbrella Academy arrives on Netflix today to send them on more wild adventures. Born on the same fated day in 1989 to mothers who weren’t pregnant when they woke up that morning — then raised by an eccentric father figure keenly interested in their various superpowers — the Hargreeves siblings have been through a hell of a lot.

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Features Secret QR Code, Here's ... (Comicbook.com)

Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season three follow! It's become a newfound tradition for streaming TV shows to hide QR codes where fans are least ...

Included in the Flash set are: a moon (a reference to Luther's interstellar home and the celestial body that Viktor destroyed), a Commission briefcase, a Sparrow Academy logo, an Umbrella Academy logo, a sparrow holding an umbrella, a domino mask (the trademark look for The Umbrella Academy as children), some tentacles (referencing Ben's powers), a violin (referencing Viktor's powers), a ghost (referencing Klaus' powers), a bell (referencing the Hotels Obsidian/Oblivion), some satanic imagery, the tattoo that Five gets on his chest, the map of the Hotel Oblivion, and a few others. For starters we must mention how the new season of The Umbrella Academy takes place in a new timeline, one where the Umbrellas weren't born and the Sparrow Academy is in charge. The most recent season of The Umbrella Academy features a hidden QR code but the surprise it contains is sadly not a free comic.
