Ray Warren was the voice of rugby league coverage for the Nine Network, calling 99 of the 122 State of Origin matches played since the interstate clashes began in 1982. ‘Rabs’ will come out of retirement to star in an upcoming episode of the kids show, which will feature the show’s characters watching a State of Origin game. Legendary NRL commentator Ray Warren will be joining the ‘Bluey-verse’.

Bluey is leaning even more into Aussie culture. The show is adding one very niche sporting celebrity and Bluey is going to be watching the State of Origin.

The underlying message here isn’t that Rabs will be on Bluey. The real message here is that Bluey, despite global success, isn’t backing down from its Aussie roots. Warren is known as the voice of rugby league coverage for the Nine Network, calling 99 of the 122 State of Origin matches played since the interstate clashes began in 1982. The show, supposedly for kids, but loved by many an adult, is adding one very niche sporting celebrity to its program.

Warren retired from commentary in the lead up to Game 1 of the State of Origin series, having called 99 State of Origin games and 45 grand finals during his nearly 50-year career behind the microphone as the number one caller in the NRL. "One of the great things about this episode is that it is by way of introduction for some kids to rugby league," Warren said. The ABC are hoping the episode, called "The Decider" - a reference to the third game in a State of Origin series where NSW and QLD have won one each of the first two games - will introduce rugby league and State of Origin to a global audience.
