Can Gold Coast continue winning ways when it hosts the Crows ... (AFL)

Gold Coast will be looking to make it five wins from six matches, but Adelaide has two handy inclusions to bolster its chances.

But it won’t be an easy task, with the Suns on somewhat of a role, winning four of their past five games including a significant win over flag-fancy Fremantle, and knocking on the door of the top eight. Exciting first-year player Josh Rachele, who missed the last two games with a corked thigh, and defender Jordon Butts (concussion) both come back into the side that will be aiming to make it two wins in a row when they travel to the Gold Coast. It was probably a lull there for a little bit after the injury, but we were able to get it back on our terms." We all winced and gasped when we first saw it." They're going to have to stop play for that, surely.

Rankine finished with 17 disposals, 11 score involvements and two assists to go with his three goals. It was contagious as Taylor Walker missed three shots, Laird missed one on the run, and when the Crows were closing the gap late Shane McAdam could not convert. Adelaide did more than enough around the ground to be competitive – having 81 more disposals and four more clearances - but its goalkicking would give coach Matthew Nicks nightmares. After arguably the club's best run with injuries for years, Gold Coast has been clobbered with horror luck in the past fortnight. Their finals hopes could be decided in the next month with games to come against Port Adelaide (away), Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon (away) as the ladder tightens up at the top. The Suns also had a remarkably even spread across their side, with Izak Rankine (three goals, 17 disposals), Matt Rowell (19 disposals, 11tackles) and Noah Anderson (27 disposals) their best. Despite only kicking just the one major in the first term, the Suns were able to wrestle control of the contest through the midfield and get on top of their opponents in Adelaide.

Gold Coast v Adelaide - The Mongrel Review - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

The Suns went in deserved favourites here, as you'd expect from a match where 11th is playing 15th, but there was more at stake than ladder position.

Dew managed to make certain that his players made the most of their talents in this game, and proactively shifted tactic and structure to keep the initiative. McHenry was working hard to put pressure on the kick, and launched himself as Powell tried to dispose of the ball. For anyone who has made a conscious effort to avoid the vision, the short version is that Powell and McHenry were chasing a ball that was tumbling towards the boundary. His ability to read the ball and even direct his teammates as he’s tracking the play, his opponent and his fellow Suns in motion is sublime. Hately and Hamill were near the contest, but when Hately went in to get the crumbs, Hamill stayed out and set himself in an open patch of grass. Being a forward, sometimes it just means taking the moments when they come to you, and late in the last he had a chance to keep his team’s hopes alive with a mark inside 50, and converted well. Much of that is down to the pace and workrate of the Suns midfield, but you can only judge quality by outcome, so the big Sun gets the gold. It was certainly not good, and I’m at a loss to understand why the medico with the green whistle in his glove didn’t hand it over asap. Gold Coast fans will understand how it feels to support a team in the lower portion of the ladder. As he converted, the game looked to be getting away from Adelaide. As has happened so often, it was Rory Laird and Tex Walker who attempted to rally their team with some determined plays and smart use of the body from both of them. Fogarty dropped a contested mark, but it was recovered by Hately who found Hamill on the outside and in space to kick his first career goal in his 32nd game. The opening quarter was a tightly-contested affair, with each side trying to move the ball rapidly, but wary of overextending and being caught on the overlap.
