US Open 2022: Has the US Open become too one-dimensional ... (Australian Golf Digest)

Take a glance at the US Open's recent roll call of winners. Its past six championships have been won by Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Gary Woodland, Brooks ...

“What we do in a US Open, we endeavour to have the players get every club in their bag dirty,” Bodenhamer said. “So what we’re trying to do is address the slope of a curve long-term. I am telling you with these small greens and the firmness, they’re going to need to be in the fairway.” It’s that last sentiment that permits a second look and how it pertains to the USGA and setup. To be fair, it’s not that recent US Open winners are merely bomb-and-gougers; few in the sport own games as complete as the reigning champ, Rahm. Moreover this trend is not unique to the US Open. What transpires at this event mirrors what you see weekly on the PGA Tour, and the PGA Championship has likewise been dominated over the past decade by players who are far from short. One of the ongoing conversations during the past decade has been distance gains, and the USGA – which governs equipment regulations in the United States and Mexico – recently dropped a few more logs into the fire. One of the common complaints from players at Winged Foot in 2020 and to an extent Torrey Pines last June was that the fairways were so narrow that no one could hit them. Ostensibly the last player not known for prodigious length to come out on top was Jordan Spieth at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay, yet that’s a bit of a misnomer, too; Spieth finished that season 15th in strokes gained/off-the-tee, above big hitters like Koepka, Jason Kokrak and Tony Finau. Yet tests themselves warrant scrutiny, and a view of the recent past casts suspicion that the examination is as thorough as believed. Accuracy and power off the tee, approaches that knew when to attack, when to play safe and above all else avoid disaster. Historically, the US Open is not so much a tournament as it is a test. It is both the championship’s aspiration as well as its aura, and at times its Achilles heel, yet there is no doubt that the player who is left standing had earned a respect for passing golf’s most thorough examination.

If I can take myself to that level of focus, then I know I have the physical tools to win a Major again.” At this point, I don’t have 84 more Majors. I need take myself to a place where I play like it’s my last ever tournament. Right from the start of my career, I had some good guidance with the physical training aspect and injury prevention.” “It’s one of those things, if you look deep enough through the stats, you can find stuff,” Scott said. But Scott’s only Major win to date was his historic 2013 Masters win at Augusta National. When asked, Scott’s Majors streak appeared to remind him of his strike rate. Scott’s incredible longevity is evident in the fact he will tee up in his 84th consecutive Major at the US Open, the longest streak of any active male player.

LIV golfers face tougher route to US Open (7NEWS.com.au)

Players on Greg Norman's LIV Invitational Series can expect a tougher route to get into future US Open fields, the USGA has warned.

"But as we would do any year, we're going to definitely re-evaluate field criteria. "Will that be true? "It would be a lot of hypotheticals for me to get what LIV is going to be by the time we're talking about this next year," said Whan.

Surrounded by LIV controversy, Phil Mickelson prepares for the ... (USA TODAY)

Mickelson was suspended from the PGA Tour over his participation in LIV Golf, but is playing in the U.S. Open this week at Brookline.

“This is one of the saddest days in the history of golf. “Am I disappointed in him taking the route that he's taken? The punishment, however, does not affect their qualification to play at the 122nd U.S. Open in Brookline, Mass, starting Thursday, June 16. I am. But I think he has come back and shown some remorse about how he's handled some things, so I think he's learned from that. In a press conference preceding the U.S. Open, Mickelson and golfers who competed in the LIV received a letter from the survivors’ group 9/11 Families United that accused them of sportswashing and engaging in “a betrayal not only of us, but of all your countrymen.”

US Open chief says LIV golfers could face ban from future tournaments (The Guardian)

A letter, stating those players had “sold us out”, was sent to the agents of Johnson, DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Kevin Na. All are in this US Open field. I remember where I was, what I was doing, who I was talking to when the first plane went in. Whan revealed the USGA gave late consideration to preventing LIV golfers from playing in this 122nd staging of the US Open, but ultimately believed that unfair and impractical. “To be honest with you, what we’re talking about was different two years ago, and it was different two months ago than it is today. When asked whether he can envisage a scenario in the future where the LIV group are blocked from US Open participation the USGA’s chief executive, Mike Whan, said: “Yes.” Asked to expand on this position, Whan said: “I just answered the question, ‘Could I foresee a day? The former US Open champions Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer and Bryson DeChambeau are among those who have been banned by the PGA Tour after committing to the Saudi Arabia‑backed breakaway.

Introducing one of the coolest qualifying stories at the US Open ... (Australian Golf Digest)

Sean Jacklin, 30-year-old son of 1970 US Open champion Tony, tees it up this week at The Country Club at Brookline and his qualifying story is a beauty.

“He’s a Hall of Fame golfer, and you always try to follow in the footsteps of your dad. “Obviously, with the history of my dad in the event, I’ve always wanted to follow in his footsteps,” he said. As much as I want to play well, I want to be my own best friend and enjoy the week.” I don’t see anything wrong with showcasing that fact and being the lone Scot in the field. Anyway, I knew what I had to do the last three holes and I holed a nice four-and-a-half footer for a par on the last.” At the end it was like, ‘what just happened?’ I wasn’t even in the sectionals and now I was in the US Open as co-medalist. I’ve been privileged to grow up following my dad around on the Champions Tour. I constantly tried to absorb as much wisdom as I can. I’m learning where you can go and where you shouldn’t. I’m looking forward to it. I could easily have thought I probably wasn’t going to get in and not bothered. When he was 2, Sean and family moved to the US—hence his own strong American twang. Things like this make all the down times worth it, and I’m just really grateful.” Jacklin the younger—named after 007 himself, Sean Connery—was born in Caledonia during the family’s four-year sojourn “north of the border” in the early 1990s.

U.S. Open 2022: USGA sets U.S. Open purse at a record high for ... (GolfDigest.com)

On Wednesday, USGA CEO Mike Whan announced that the overall purse for the U.S. Open has been bumped up to $17.5 million, a $5 million increase from 2021. And the Players Championship still has a bigger prize money payout ($20 million) than any of the four majors. Massive prize money payouts have fueled interest in the upstart LIV Golf Invitational series, which paid Charl Schwartzel $4 million for his individual victory at last week’s debut event with $20 million given out to the 48 competitors. The USGA’s increase for the U.S. Open comes after nearly doubling the purse this year for the U.S. Women’s Open, handling out $10 million to the field. It’s not so coincidental that the majors would make such substantial moves with their prize money payouts. But they’ll be playing for a historic amount of money, too.

Expert picks and betting tips for the 2022 U.S. Open (ESPN Australia)

Who can win? Who has the best betting value? What props are the most interesting? Our experts look at the 2022 U.S Open from all angles.

Marks: Arnaus has the distance to compete this week. He's also terrible around the green -- 204th in strokes gained around the green -- and given the small size of these greens, that could spell trouble for him this weekend. Schauffele ranks seventh in strokes gained: tee-to-green and ninth in strokes gained: total. This is a literal "bang for the buck" bet. This course is tailor-made for a guy fifth on approach and 20th off the tee, and a third leg of grand slam is not out of the question. He has six top 10s at the U.S. Open, including a win in 2016. It's time for the X-Man to breakthrough with his first major win. This course will mandate long, accurate play off the tee, and that's right up DJ's alley. Thomas is arguably the hottest golfer on tour right now and finally got past the "second major" drought last month. Will the favorites prevail? 2022 U.S. Open predictions, picks, favorites: Ranking the field from 1 ... (CBSSports.com)

The top 22 players entering the 122nd United States Open should make for an entertaining major championship.

Young had three consecutive top-three finishes (including the PGA Championship) and seemed poised to fight for a fourth before shooting 84 (!) on Sunday at the Memorial in his last round before this event. 18. Matt Fitzpatrick (T12 in 2019): The easiest storyline of the week is that he won the U.S. Amateur here in 2013. 9. Sam Burns (T41 in 2018): Burns has yet to top 10 at a major, but he's playing the best golf of his life. 16. Max Homa (MC in 2021): Throw him in the Scheffler-Thomas-Burns group of currently playing the best golf of his life. That's the category that will determine whether he thrives at Brookline, but he certainly has the game and the array of shots needed to win a major championship. 12. Shane Lowry (T2 in 2016): After what happened to Europe in 1999 at the Ryder Cup, perhaps this would feel like a bit of redemption 23 years later. He has the best approach numbers of anyone in the field, and we know his short game is nasty. 8. Brooks Koepka (Won in 2017 and 2018): I don't love his form coming in -- Scheffler has won four times since Koepka last had a top 10 at a stroke play event -- but it's difficult to ignore his U.S. Open credentials. 3. Justin Thomas (T8 in 2020): Thomas has had his moments at this championship -- specifically a thunderous 63 at Erin Hills in 2017 -- but he's never really been in it at the very end of a U.S. Open. Somehow, he's elevated his game in 2022 even beyond what we've seen from him before. In his last four U.S. Opens, Koepka has two victories and has been defeated by a total of four golfers. 1. Rory McIlroy (Won in 2011): McIlroy enters No. 1 in the Data Golf rankings, which are probably a more accurate representation of who's currently playing the best golf in the world than the conventional Official World Golf Rankings. All the ingredients are there for a Rory romp, but whether it happens is a completely different story. There's myriad storylines entering the 2022 U.S. Open, and among those is a reunion of the best players in the world.

Rory has become a general in golf's civil war. It's the spark he needs to end a baffling drought.

“The US Open has been a weird one. Someone that’s really smart and can manoeuvre their way around the golf course.” “I think there’s a purpose there for him that’s bigger than just him. So, that was really cool for me, just a little sense of pride on that one.” So that’s where it feels like you’re taking the easy way out,” he said. “I sort of rededicated myself to the game a little bit. “So I just put the work in, I’ve got a great team around me. He wants to be on the best tour in the world, he’s a spokesman for the PGA Tour and he wants to be out there spearheading it as a figurehead of that tour. McIlroy has been in a rich vein of form in recent months, shooting back up to No.3 in the world, while his most recent finishes on the PGA Tour have been second, fifth, eighth, T28 and first. And I did. “The guy that’s spearheading that tour has 20 wins on the PGA Tour and I was tied with him and I wanted to get one ahead of him. The win was a dramatic statement for a player that was as busy playing a political game off the course, as he was playing golf on it.

2022 U.S. Open picks, odds: Expert predictions, favorites to win from ... (CBSSports.com)

Who will win the 122nd U.S. Open? Our experts dive into all the twists and turns of the year's third major.

The last player to win on the PGA Tour and follow it with a major victory was McIlroy himself back in 2014 where he won WGC-Bridgestone ahead of his PGA victory at Valhalla. Phil Mickelson prediction -- Missed cut: This won't be much of a surprise, but it feels like Phil is going to miss the cut. Please nobody show him this because this is the exact thing he would use as motivation to go out win another U.S. Open. The reality is that the results just haven't been there for him this year, and he hasn't been playing much at all. Since winning at the Valspar Championship in March, he has two top-five finishes and another win (at the Charles Schwab two weeks ago). He's also coming in to the weekend with a T4 at the Canadian Open where he was able to hang tough with the likes of Thomas, Shane Lowry and Scottie Scheffler. He's had his fair share of struggles at U.S. Opens in the past with only a T4 as the standout finish. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. One of those ended in heartbreak, as he held the lead walking to hole No. 72 at the PGA Championship before giving up the lead thanks to a bungled drive. Winner -- Patrick Cantlay (25-1): The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. Top 10 lock -- Shane Lowry: Lowry's first taste of major championship contention was the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Ever since, I have believed his game to be perfect for the sternest examination in golf. It would be the perfect ending to a fortnight of madness in the golf world. Winner -- Justin Thomas (11-1): He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. Sleeper -- Davis Riley (60-1): Quietly playing some of the best golf in the world, Riley's swing reeks of one that could claim a U.S. Open trophy.

The longest hitter in golf traveled an impressive distance to a berth in his first major.

With clubhead speeds of up to 135 mph, Matthews is likely to hit only four or five drivers at The Country Club, which means he might not have to wait as long for his approach shots. In the intervening years, Matthews’ game has developed enough where he returned to the Korn Ferry Tour, and last week, crossed two significant thresholds in a span of a few days. But that was also the greatest year for me because that year taught me how to handle the most adversity I faced. Matthews lost the playoff, but was lauded for the grace he showed after learning the young man had Down syndrome. After making the quarterfinal of the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club in 2013, Matthews took a circuitous route to his first major championship. Brandon Matthews still had to hit, and as per usual, he was sufficiently removed from the pack.

And which massive long shot has a chance to stun the golfing world? The 25-year-old is still fairly new to the PGA Tour, but he has already established himself as one of the best major championship golfers in the world. One of McClure's favorite bets this week is Dustin Johnson over Daniel Berger at -130 odds. Which 2022 U.S. Open sleepers should you target for a potentially huge payday? Which players should you target when building your 2022 U.S. Open prop bet strategy? In addition, McClure's best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was a massive 40-1 long shot. The PGA Tour returns to The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. this week for the first time since Matthew Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Amateur in 2013. This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend.

U.S. Open field 2022: Ranking top 25 golfers as Justin Thomas ... (Sporting News AU)

The course at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. will favor golfers with great ball-striking and scrambling abilities. Here's who should be among those in ...

Fleetwood checks three boxes that will be important to having success at The Country Club. He ranks top-15 on tour around the green, is a top-20 putter and ranks 26th in scrambling this season. That could put Conners in contention at The Country Club but at the very least, he has a great chance to be a top-20 finisher. Still, the No. 7-ranked golfer in the world should make the cut and could be a top-20 finisher because of his upside. He has finished no better than T40 in his last three events and missed the cut at the Memorial Tournament. His putter is extremely hot and cold and he ranks 160th among qualified players in SG:P. Zalatoris has gotten hot with the putter, but between that and his middling scrambling game, there are better options than him in this week's field. Horschel is one of the best players on and around the green at this week's event, as he is a top-10 putter who also ranks top-12 in SG:AGR, meaning that he will get the ball close to the hole frequently. In his most recent action, Niemann carded a 7 under at The Memorial Tournament. That put him in a tie for third place. The good with Spieth: he ranks top 30 in SG:OTT, SG:APP and SG:ARG while supplementing that with a top-10 mark scrambling. Is No. 7 too low for the world's No. 1 golfer? His putter can hold him back at times — he ranks 62nd in SG:P — but if he has a good week on the greens, he could finally win his first U.S. Open. McIlroy is fresh off a win at the Canadian Open where he was red-hot with the putter and shot a final-round 62 to finish 19 under for the tournament. Of the world's top 30 golfers, 29 are participating in this year's American championship.

Expert verdict on all 7 Aussies at US Open and the sneaky winning ... (Fox Sports)

I was hovering that week, my feet weren’t on the ground because there’s a lot going on at the US Open. There’s a lot of people there, there’s a lot of media, there’s a lot of everything and it’s about putting up with the event and the show that’s on. “He’s got that all-round game that you need for a US Open. He’s got the power, he’s got the strength, it’s just about putting that mental side to it. I think he’s got the game to play in the US regularly. He’s got the game to be playing at the highest level. He’s like Min and like Lucas Herbert, they have to play more of these events to get more comfortable and when they’re more comfortable, we know they’ve got the games to compete.” He’s played off invites in the US this year, he played really well in that final round of the Masters. I watched him on the back nine, there was a level of maturity. This is the one that he’s flying under the radar because a lot of people don’t know he’s actually had a good year without having a standout year. I’ve known the kid since he was 14 and there was a level of maturity that came across with him playing that event. It’s not the be all and end all but he now knows he’s in that realm of players. It’s not like he’s got the yips, he’s actually putting fine but running a lot of edges and not quite holing putts, which means his speed is off a bit. But he’s got a new driver in the bag this week. He’s got that stature about him and he needs to be in that stature of players that he plays with.”

(Though some golfers, such as 2016 U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, have special exemption for future events). Despite the PGA Tour's suspension of said golfers, each of the four majors — the other three being the Masters, PGA Championship and British Open — have autonomy in deciding who qualifies for their respective events. For instance, Rory McIlroy — winner of last week's RBC Canadian Open — took a shot at LIV head man Greg Norman while expressing disappointment in Mickelson, one of the tour's biggest names.

2022 U.S. Open leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores today ... (CBSSports.com)

The 122nd U.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the national championship taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States.

The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straight U.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted championships since 2014 is obscene given some of the low rounds he's shot, but he finally seems to be back to form. This is the best Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he's even coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his back given his staunch support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. Brookline is going to demand precisely what Smith can bring: a killer short game for its lightning-quick greens and precision off the tees for the numerous blind shots golfers will be making this week. J.T. is one of the three best iron players on the planet, and his hot putter has translated to wins and near wins for the last two months. He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. The Olympian has pulled out of the 122nd U.S. Open citing health concerns. Four days of major championship golf on a menacing course in a terrific city. Behind them are Adam Scott, Max Homa and a 75% Jordan Spieth. For those of you not in the know, the three-time major winner is experiencing some tummy issues -- pro move not wearing white pants. Those two legends of the game make way for new ones as world No. 3 Rory McIlroy begin his quest for major No. 5 in the early hours of the first round. For all the nonsense that's happened this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong journeyman whose son is serving as caddie leading after the first 18 holes?

US Open golf 2022: first round – live! (The Guardian)

Yes, yes, the LIV Tour has been hanging around the run-up to the 122nd US Open at Brookline like a bad smell. The 33-year-old from Georgia has yet to finish in the top ten, but he did tie for low amateur in 2010 at Pebble Beach, and enjoyed his best result last year at Torrey Pines with a tie for 13th. But it’s hosted three previous US Opens, won by Curtis Strange in 1988, Julius Boros in 1963, and most famously of all, the amateur Francis Ouimet in 1913. But let’s not allow it to linger, for none of the players involved with the breakaway tour are considered particularly likely winners of the USGA’s flagship event. He taps in for a second birdie and becomes the first man to reach -2. Henley is quickly joined at the top by Collin Morikawa. The reigning Open champion could be very dangerous here this week, with approach play at a premium to Brookline’s often small and tightly guarded greens. The second miss was a particular shame, as he’d sent a delightful short iron into 4, using the right-to-left slope of the green to gather his ball to four feet. Never the most accurate from the tee, he’s yet to hit one, and as a result he’s dropped shots at 1, 3 and 4. He’ll need all his scrambling genius this week, and he demonstrates that, too, getting up and down from sand at the short par-four 5th to haul himself back to +2. Spieth’s combined score for last four opening rounds at the US Open is +18. He’ll need to go some to put a dent into that surprisingly awful record today. Well, that’s not quite accurate: a missed cut at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay, and that’s it for the 28-year-old South Carolinian. But he’s now a joint leader of this one. Not so the 2021 Masters champ Matsuyama, who followed birdie at 11 with a three-putt double bogey at 12. McIlroy’s paired with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. Schauffele – who has never finished lower than seventh in his five US Open appearances – has matched Rory shot for shot so far.

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: Jordan Spieth struggles early, Rory ... (GolfDigest.com)

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: The latest news and analysis from our writers at the 122nd U.S. Open at Brookline.

6:48 a.m.: The action is officially underway at The Country Club! Michael Thorbjornsen, a 20-year-old amateur from Massachusetts teeing it up at Brookline (sound familiar?) had the honor of hitting the first tee shot off the first tee. What a great thrill for the 58-year-old. 8:03 a.m.: Hideki Matusyama sticks his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole, which is playing as the easiest hole on the course thus far, to grab a share of the lead. A tough early bogey from Spieth ... and just by the eye test, he doesn't look 100 percent post-stomach bug. Again, just like Spieth, people were down on Morikawa on the eve of the U.S. Open because he admitted to some reporters he was having trouble hitting a fade. Hopefully the Mighty Quinn's friends and family screenshotted that shot of the leaderboard while he was up there. And speaking of struggles, Hideki just double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole after that birdie at 11. 8:30 a.m.: Russell Henley is the first player to 2-under, birdieing the 10th and 12th holes early in his round. 9:14 p.m.: Maybe not the biggest name but qualifier Harry Hall with a beautiful shot on the par 3 11th just north of the hole. 8:40 a.m.: Henley has company at the top, as Collin Morikawa just rolled another nice birdie putt in at the fifth hole. Adam Scott doesn't put enough on it and the ball will find its way to the bottom of the steep eighth incline. Of course, the beauty of a U.S. Open are the never-ending storylines that its competitors present itself.

In the pro ranks, Fraser Moore set the pace in the Tartan Pro Tour’s Pollok Open as he carded a four-under 67 at the Glasgow venue. Scott, who played in the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot, lost out in a six-man play-off in Texas last month for the last two spots in a final qualifier for this week’s event at Brookline. The winner of this week’s Amateur Championship at Royal Lytham secures a spot in next month’s 150th Open, with Scott still standing in the battle for a dream date at St Andrews.
