A letter, stating those players had “sold us out”, was sent to the agents of Johnson, DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Kevin Na. All are in this US Open field. I remember where I was, what I was doing, who I was talking to when the first plane went in. Whan revealed the USGA gave late consideration to preventing LIV golfers from playing in this 122nd staging of the US Open, but ultimately believed that unfair and impractical. “To be honest with you, what we’re talking about was different two years ago, and it was different two months ago than it is today. When asked whether he can envisage a scenario in the future where the LIV group are blocked from US Open participation the USGA’s chief executive, Mike Whan, said: “Yes.” Asked to expand on this position, Whan said: “I just answered the question, ‘Could I foresee a day? The former US Open champions Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer and Bryson DeChambeau are among those who have been banned by the PGA Tour after committing to the Saudi Arabia‑backed breakaway.

2022 U.S. Open leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores today ... (CBSSports.com)

The 122nd U.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the national championship taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States.

The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straight U.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted championships since 2014 is obscene given some of the low rounds he's shot, but he finally seems to be back to form. This is the best Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he's even coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his back given his staunch support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. Brookline is going to demand precisely what Smith can bring: a killer short game for its lightning-quick greens and precision off the tees for the numerous blind shots golfers will be making this week. J.T. is one of the three best iron players on the planet, and his hot putter has translated to wins and near wins for the last two months. He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. The Olympian has pulled out of the 122nd U.S. Open citing health concerns. Four days of major championship golf on a menacing course in a terrific city. Behind them are Adam Scott, Max Homa and a 75% Jordan Spieth. For those of you not in the know, the three-time major winner is experiencing some tummy issues -- pro move not wearing white pants. Those two legends of the game make way for new ones as world No. 3 Rory McIlroy begin his quest for major No. 5 in the early hours of the first round. For all the nonsense that's happened this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong journeyman whose son is serving as caddie leading after the first 18 holes?

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: Jordan Spieth struggles early, Rory ... (GolfDigest.com)

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: The latest news and analysis from our writers at the 122nd U.S. Open at Brookline.

6:48 a.m.: The action is officially underway at The Country Club! Michael Thorbjornsen, a 20-year-old amateur from Massachusetts teeing it up at Brookline (sound familiar?) had the honor of hitting the first tee shot off the first tee. What a great thrill for the 58-year-old. 8:03 a.m.: Hideki Matusyama sticks his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole, which is playing as the easiest hole on the course thus far, to grab a share of the lead. A tough early bogey from Spieth ... and just by the eye test, he doesn't look 100 percent post-stomach bug. Again, just like Spieth, people were down on Morikawa on the eve of the U.S. Open because he admitted to some reporters he was having trouble hitting a fade. Hopefully the Mighty Quinn's friends and family screenshotted that shot of the leaderboard while he was up there. And speaking of struggles, Hideki just double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole after that birdie at 11. 8:30 a.m.: Russell Henley is the first player to 2-under, birdieing the 10th and 12th holes early in his round. 9:14 p.m.: Maybe not the biggest name but qualifier Harry Hall with a beautiful shot on the par 3 11th just north of the hole. 8:40 a.m.: Henley has company at the top, as Collin Morikawa just rolled another nice birdie putt in at the fifth hole. Adam Scott doesn't put enough on it and the ball will find its way to the bottom of the steep eighth incline. Of course, the beauty of a U.S. Open are the never-ending storylines that its competitors present itself.

U.S.G.A. Could Bar LIV Golf Players From Future U.S. Opens (The New York Times)

Over the years, Augusta National has honored exceedingly traditional values and been reluctant to change. When the PGA Tour retaliated last week by suspending 17 players who had aligned with LIV Golf, the looming question was whether the major championships’ chieftains from Augusta National Golf Club (the Masters), the United States Golf Association (the U.S. Open), the R&A (the British Open) and the PGA of America (the P.G.A. Championship) would choose a side. I think that golf’s in a good place right now.” Importantly, he instead suggested that it was not good for golf. “We have to see what this becomes — if this is an exhibition or tour?” he said. He continued: “I’ve heard that this is good for the game. It got our attention for this championship.” At least from my outside view right now, it looks like it’s good for a few folks playing the game, but I’m struggling with how this is good for the game.” But the breakaway circuit has surprisingly lured some leading players, most of whom had professed their loyalty to the United States-based PGA Tour just weeks, or days, earlier. “I could.” Since they have long been allied with the recognized tours in the United States and Europe, would they snub the alternative LIV Golf Invitational series and exclude its players from their events? They are overseen by four distinct entities sometimes described as the four families of golf (insert organized crime joke here).

That's going to play as basically a 100-yard shot for the pros, I think, and that's just ... *chef's kiss.* He has a solo second and a T8 at the first two major tournaments this year, and this course is a really nice setup for him. The 2022 U.S. Open will be available via streaming on Peacock with exclusive windows as well as featured groups. In what has been somewhat of a downturn of a season after last year’s best-in-class form, this is the perfect opportunity for Rahm to get back on track. He has bogeyed Nos. 1, 3 and now 4, with a par at No. 2. None of this is secret anymore — hell, two decades have passed — but in Boston, old habits die hard, and when one guy from the neighborhood tells a story about another guy from the neighborhood, it’s best not to blab. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open. The ball rams into the jar and Leonard takes off running. “See over there,” the caddie says, pointing to a spot on the green. Those are the stories in the annals. A Rory or JT or Speith or Rahm. US Open golf 2022: first round – live! (The Guardian)

The Players champion and Masters nearly man Cam Smith. The FedEx champ Patrick Cantlay. Sam Burns, a three-time winner on Tour this season. The in-form Matthew ...

Yes, yes, the LIV Tour has been hanging around the run-up to the 122nd US Open at Brookline like a bad smell. The 33-year-old from Georgia has yet to finish in the top ten, but he did tie for low amateur in 2010 at Pebble Beach, and enjoyed his best result last year at Torrey Pines with a tie for 13th. But it’s hosted three previous US Opens, won by Curtis Strange in 1988, Julius Boros in 1963, and most famously of all, the amateur Francis Ouimet in 1913. But let’s not allow it to linger, for none of the players involved with the breakaway tour are considered particularly likely winners of the USGA’s flagship event. He taps in for a second birdie and becomes the first man to reach -2. Henley is quickly joined at the top by Collin Morikawa. The reigning Open champion could be very dangerous here this week, with approach play at a premium to Brookline’s often small and tightly guarded greens. The second miss was a particular shame, as he’d sent a delightful short iron into 4, using the right-to-left slope of the green to gather his ball to four feet. Never the most accurate from the tee, he’s yet to hit one, and as a result he’s dropped shots at 1, 3 and 4. He’ll need all his scrambling genius this week, and he demonstrates that, too, getting up and down from sand at the short par-four 5th to haul himself back to +2. Spieth’s combined score for last four opening rounds at the US Open is +18. He’ll need to go some to put a dent into that surprisingly awful record today. Well, that’s not quite accurate: a missed cut at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay, and that’s it for the 28-year-old South Carolinian. But he’s now a joint leader of this one. Not so the 2021 Masters champ Matsuyama, who followed birdie at 11 with a three-putt double bogey at 12. McIlroy’s paired with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. Schauffele – who has never finished lower than seventh in his five US Open appearances – has matched Rory shot for shot so far.

Adam Scott’s 84th consecutive major championship is off to a strong start, the Queenslander just three back after a round of one-under 69 at the US Open at The Country Club in Brookline.

McIlroy obliterates club in US Open rage (Wide World of Sports)

McIlroy shot a 67 and a share of the lead with qualifiers Joel Dahmen, David Lingmerth and Callum Tarren bu...

Lingmerth was in the same qualifier and had to play 36 holes and then some because of a 5-for-1 playoff for the final spot. But now it's time for golf, and there a vibe of relief that focus could turn to a US Open that first came to Brookline more than a century ago. He couldn't save par on that one and had to accept a 67 — not a bad start, and no apologies for his few outbursts of emotion. For McIlroy, it was his second straight major — and third time in his last four US Opens — he opened with a score better than par. Collin Morikawa, trying to win a major for the third straight year, thought he might be able to take it deep — at least by US Open standards — when he birdied the ninth hole to reach 3-under. Even with a good start, and coming off a victory last week in the Canadian Open, it doesn't figure to be easy.

Huggan: Tarren continues multiple U.S. Open traditions (Golf Australia Magazine)

Amongst many, one of the great traditions at the U.S. Open is that the men who shoot some of the lowest scores on day one are often enough household names.

So this is the second U.S. Open I've played in – and second time no golf clubs." So this is the second U.S. Open I've played in – and second time no golf clubs. “I picked a club that was going to fly to the middle of the putting surface,” he explained. Cox did go on to finish a respectable T-3 in 1934, but for the rest of our unlikely heroes, the remainder of their weeks in the national championship sun soon enough clouded over to varying degrees. Luckily, somebody I know in Canada went to the airport and gave the airport staff a little kick. The clubs arrived on Wednesday and Tarren left on Friday, back to the obscurity he has largely enjoyed since. Was in perfect position to watch the last four holes and the play-off.” “And when they shut the door it crushed the charger and bent the door. He’s had to be, at least in the U.S. Open. Three years ago he flew from Atlanta to San Francisco, from where his connection to Monterey was scheduled to leave Sunday evening. He also made it through qualifying in 2019, when he missed the cut at Pebble Beach by four shots after rounds of 73 and 75. Under “personal” in his PGA Tour bio it reads: “Worked at the Open Championship that Tom Watson almost won. In 17 starts, the man from Darlington in the north-east of England has missed the halfway cut six times.

A wild turkey, gambling taunts and a four-putt: Inside Mickelson's 18 holes from hell at US Open.

Mickelson hit a lousy approach on the first hole, leaving his ball under a chair. Mickelson said his four-month exile from the game afforded him time to spend with his wife Amy, and to continue therapy to address “some of the deficiencies that I have,” including a long-term gambling problem. As for the tournament, Mickelson called the course at The Country Club — where he’d helped the U.S. rally to topple the European team in the 1999 Ryder Cup — “a brutal test of golf.” Two-hundred million!” Mickelson made a double-bogey six on his way to an 8-over 78, leaving him behind 13 amateurs and near the very bottom of the 156-man field. A couple of fans shouted gambling references at him in the middle of his round, but they were tame.

U.S. Open 2022: Unlikely leaders, golf ball bandits, and six other ... (GolfDigest.com)

Here are the things that caught our eye—and caught us off guard—during the first round of the 2022 U.S. Open.

I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face," Rahm said laughing. Still, this is a guy who has lost to a total of four players over his past four U.S. Opens. And yet he got beaten by more than half the field on Thursday. Despite the bizarre situation, Rahm responded by making birdie to shoot 69 and put himself in great shape to defend his title. Oosthuizen, who finished T-2, solo second and T-3 in the final three majors of 2021, withdrew at this year’s Masters before finishing T-60 at the PGA, and now he’ll need a miracle to make the cut after opening with 77. You could say that the 39-year-old South African isn't LIVing at the top of major leaderboards anymore. The winner of the 2015 Memorial, Lingmerth has fallen to No. 592 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But he certainly didn’t play like that during a bogey-free 67. And Rahm thinks he knows who the culprits are. Look, the guy’s a PGA Tour winner and he finished T-9 at the Players Championship earlier this year. And that came 11 years ago at Congressional. But there he was on Thursday going out in a scorching four-under-par 31 and finishing at that number to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Remember when this guy was seemingly in the hunt at every major last year? The six-time major champ struggled from start to finish shooting an eight-over-par 78 that included a four-putt from 16 feet on No. 6. BROOKLINE, Mass. — Day 1 at the U.S. Open is in the books, and there were plenty of things that left us scratching our heads.

Phil Mickelson struggles in 1st round at U.S. Open, tied for 145th ... (ESPN Australia)

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson said one of the reasons he prefers the new LIV Golf Invitational Series is because of its 54-hole ...

Mickelson was playing in the U.S. Open after being indefinitely suspended by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan a week ago. Mickelson has been runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times. "I really enjoyed the test; I think it's just a spectacular golf course," Mickelson told reporters in the players' parking lot after the round. But then Mickelson yanked his tee shot into the thick rough on the right side on No. 12, needed two shots to get back to the fairway and carded a double-bogey 6 to drop to 7 over. Mickelson was one of 17 tour players who competed in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London without a conflicting-event release. Playing for the first time in the U.S. since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, Mickelson had bogeys on three of the first five holes and then four-putted from 12 feet for a double bogey on the par-3 sixth.

Hadwin holds U.S. Open lead ahead of stars and surprises (Golf Australia Magazine)

Round One of a U.S. Open has a tendency to send observers to bio pages or Google. While there might be an occasional big name at the top of the leader board ...

Averaging 296.4 yards off the tee, which tied him for 82nd out of 156 – Dahmen hit 12 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens, a recipe for U.S. Open success, and he closed with birdies on three of his last five holes. Daffue, currently fourth on the Korn Ferry Tour’s points list, once played with two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen at age 11, which began a long-standing friendship. “Sixty-six at a U.S. Open to take the first-round lead is incredible. And his game picked up where it left off at St. George’s Golf Club in Toronto, where he closed with a 62 to beat Justin Thomas by two strokes. But I'm pretty stubborn and I'm not one to give up. A similar thing happened in his only previous U.S. Open start three years ago at Pebble Beach. That year, he didn’t get his clubs until the day before the competition began. “There have been some tough days, not going to lie,” said Lingmerth, “and you kind of start asking yourself those questions. I thought my mindset was really good out there.” Hadwin, who was one-over through three holes, kickstarted his round with three consecutive birdies from No.7 to turn in four-under 31. It's something … nobody can ever take away from me at this point, but I have bigger things in my mind.” I imagine this golf course without rain will only get firmer and faster.” How about an alternate leading the field?

US Open 2022: Cameron Smith struggles on day one but remains in ... (Australian Golf Digest)

Cameron Smith is among the seven Australians competing at this week's US Open at The Country Club at Brookline outside Boston.

“I hit a lot of good shots into greens and ended up with 60 footers for birdie,” he told Australian Golf Digest after the round. Young Queenslander Jed Morgan struggled to an 82 (12 over). World No.6 Smith is Australia’s top-ranked player at the US Open but struggled in the windy afternoon conditions at the difficult Country Club, beginning with three bogeys and a birdie on his opening nine holes having started his round at the 10th.
