Few films are proving to be as hotly anticipated as Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie, with many expecting the indie auteur to provide a radical, revisionist take on the origin story behind the beloved Mattel toy.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the Barbie movie, co-written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig and directed by Gerwig, but I think it’s safe to assume, based on looks alone, that Gosling’s Ken will not be a hero. And Margot Robbie in the lead role is just as perfect. So what other Hollywood A-listers could we tee up for the next toy-franchise adaptation?
The casting is so perfect, in fact, that this might necessitate a rethink when it comes to movie adaptations of toy franchises. As such it only seems fair that a Sindy movie should star Robbie after a botched round of cosmetic surgery and several catastrophic dental procedures. There was an attempt in 2007 to make a Bratz movie, but the film failed for all manner of reasons, not least because the stars weren’t (and still aren’t) famous enough. Her Barbie looks like a version of Robbie’s Sharon Tate, or Robbie’s character from The Wolf of Wall Street. The casting is perfect. And then there’s Ryan Gosling. Gosling will play Ken in Barbie and, again, it’s a role he was born to play. Although that was already the consensus, given that it’ll be directed by Greta Gerwig from a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, the photos of the two leads put it beyond all doubt.

Ok, so turns out Ryan Gosling is still the juicy thirst trap we need as Barbie's Ken in Greta Gerwig's film alongside Margot Robbie.
It’s the total unyielding allure of Ryan that makes this whole shebang work – he’s hardly a rogue choice for the part. Plus, what I think we neglect to realise as well is that this wonderful, almost overtly caricatured version of Ken is just one of the several iterations of the iconic toy that’s rumoured to be brought to life in the film, showing we have no real idea how this script is going to play out and if Ryan’s Ken is true to what we think the character should be. And, for those in support, the feels are feverish and strong. And what people need to divert their attention to, I reckon, is keeping Ryan in the realm of comedy. – I don’t wanna hear it. While I believe there is no chance in hell of any 41-year-old woman being cast as Barbie (which is the only ageism I care about in this conversation – Ryan still got the job, after all), you can’t tell me one of the most enduring of modern Hollywood heartthrobs is such a reach to portray, again, a toy?

While Gosling has starred in numerous movies over the years, this is one of his most drastic transformations for a project to date, and quite frankly, he looks damn good. A picture of Ryan Gosling as Ken in the upcoming "Barbie" movie has been released, and his hair colour is a far cry from his days as Noah in "The Notebook." The photo shows Gosling in the quintessential '90s heartthrob getup: a frayed denim vest (sans shirt underneath), abs on full display, and most importantly, a perfectly shaggy, bleached-blonde hairstyle.
