Henry Golding and Cosmo Jarvis star alongside Johnson in the Jane Austen classic.
Doing a Jane Austen film is the dream, and there are only a few of them so I feel incredibly lucky,” Johnson told Vogue back in December. “The cast is amazing and our director, Carrie Cracknell, is fantastic. As a young adult, she fell into a passionate romance with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), but was persuaded by her family to let him go due to his rank in society. Persuasion marked the final novel penned by Austen, and was published six months after her death in 1817.

With her friends and family pushing her to be with William, Anne is forced to consider what she really wants outside of the social pressures surrounding her. After seven years, the two come back into each other’s orbit when Anne’s family rents their home to his sister and her husband. The story revolves around Anne Elliot (played by Dakota Johnson in the film), an isolated 27-year-old struggling to move on after she broke her engagement with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), after being persuaded by family friend Lady Russell (Nikki Amuka-Bird).

She was nearly ahead of schedule, but eight years prior, her parents decided the love of her life—the dashing Frederick Wentworth, played by Cosmo Jarvis—wasn’t up to snuff. The yearning! Bring on the pining! The second chances and what-could-have-beens!
Netflix just released the trailer for their adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion and it looks like everything a Jane Austen fan could want and more.
But the best part of Austen is making it your own and the creators seemed to have done that in the best way possible. And I don’t think Austen would have used the term “exes.” And while it’s hard to tell from the trailer alone, you can still feel the tension between them. The two are pretty much forced to spend time together and what at first is awkward becomes cordial and friendly. Cut to Captain Wentworth played by Cosmo Jarvis. This is the man Anne was forced to give up as a young girl because he was too poor and had no connections. Considering the family is bleeding money and he doesn’t care much for his children, he is anything but perfect.

However, late last night the streamer released the first full length trailer and was met with a pretty full-on backlash to the whole thing. Netflix's adaptation of the Jane Austen classic was touted as sticking close to the original novel with an added "modern, witty approach" to the story. It was right after the second season of Bridgerton had come to an end and we were exclusively interested in period drama.

Richard E. Grant plays Anne's narcissistic father in the movie. And the "exes" is rather unforgiveable. Persuasion is all longing & a bit melancholy & Anne's quiet strength & I'm seeing none of it in this trailer,' one pointed out. Unfortunately for them, quirky quasi-rom-coms on traditional Regency love stories seem to be on the rise as of late, if the Bridgerton boom is any indication. The commercialization of a story as widely celebrated as Austen's most mature body of work has, at first glance, produced a cast of characters unrecognizable from their origins. With Wentworth's return, she is ever more introspective and penitent, being forced to quietly confront years of repressed regret and resentment over a love lost to familial piety.

According to Jane Austen fans online, the trailer for Netflix's Dakota Johnson-led Persuasion adaptation badly missed the novel's unique tone.
This gives the novel a famously elegiac tone and a more wistful style than a lot of Austen's sharper writing, although the similarities between Netflix’s Persuasion trailer and 2020’s successful Emma adaptation have led commentators online to argue that the movie adaptation appears to be aping that earlier critical success without capturing the source novel’s maturity. For every moving love story like Sense and Sensibility, one of director Ang Lee's best movies, there is a more playful and light-hearted romp like her earlier gothic novel parody Northanger Abbey. However, the success of 2020’s Emma appears to have convinced the creatives at Netflix that all of Austen’s work falls into the quirky, frothy rom-com genre. Netflix’s upcoming period drama Persuasion recently released a trailer and the adaptation has a number of Jane Austen fans annoyed.

"Now we're worse than exes," Johnson despairs. "But he was a soldier without rank or fortune, and I was persuaded to give him up." "Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities," Netflix's official description reads.
While many can't contain their excitement for the cinematic adaptation of Austen's final novel, the newly released trailer has also annoyed Janes Austen ...
If Netflix want a funny regency novel for the Bridgerton treatment, why not go with Northanger Abbey? Or literally ANY Georgette Heyer who has about 7 million unadapted books? While it remains unclear to see how successful the newest Austen adaptation will be, judging by online reaction, Netflix’s Persuasion will need to pull through a lot to sway the opinions of Austen fans that the film hasn’t profoundly missed the mark with its adaptation of the novel. they’re literally unrecognizable.”
