Origin energy: Panthers' big guns fire in win over Knights (NRL.COM)

The Panthers' Origin contingent backed up in style as Nathan Cleary led his team to an emphatic 42-6 win over the Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium on ...

The only meeting between the teams last year resulted in a 30-16 win to the Panthers at Suncorp Stadium in round 18. The Knights beat the Raiders in both meetings last season - in Wagga in round nine and Brisbane in round 20. No-one. We want to put in performances that we can be proud of, but unfortunately, the reality of where we need to get to ... if you look at the opposition, we're envious of them. That's the organisation that we want to get to, and it's going to take time. Ponga failed his HIA and played no further part, leaving the Knights without their most dynamic attacking weapon. Viliame Kikau is an awesome sight in full flight if you're a spectator but not so much for defenders trying to stop him.

Brian To'o crossed on the opposing flank and Cleary added a penalty on the stroke of half-time to leave the Panthers with a 26-0 advantage. Cleary then caught Newcastle's stand-in fullback Kurt Mann out of position with a 40-20 which allowed winger Taylan May to burrow over on the next set. Even in the period their star man was on the field, the Knights were largely ineffective due to the brilliance of Cleary and halves partner Jarome Luai.

“Where’s the halves? “They came back from Origin after what would have been a disappointing night for them and they delivered for their club. it’s a big 40 minutes, they need to show something,” Anasta said. Where’s the fullback? “He’s always been a damaging back rower, six tries (this season) and his eighth try assist of the season, then you put in his defence on the back of that – the way that he’s evolved his defensive game. Corey Parker said after the game that the Knights were “absolutely spanked” at home once again and that there’s “serious concerns over what’s going on at Newcastle.” Michael Ennis predicted pre-game that whoever defends Kikau, who has been in “tremendous form” in the Knights clash “are going to be in for some bruises.” With the vision to get the ball out to the side.” They were outstanding… Corey Parker said that Cleary “had his fingerprints on absolutely everything,” and that all of the NSW representatives “haven’t missed a beat.” Cleary finished the game with a try, a try assist, a tackle bust, an offload and a linebreak assist, while Luai got two try assists, a linebreak, a linebreak assist and three tackle busts. Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai were on a mission and played a huge role in the big win, while Brian To’o notched up big metres and scored a double.

Cleary fires as Panthers trounce hapless Knights (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Nathan Cleary was back to his best in Newcastle on Sunday having come under fire after NSW's narrow loss in the State of Origin opener.

Ponga and centre Dane Gagai backed up for the Knights after featuring in Queensland’s game one triumph. The Knights are without Daniel Saifiti, Bradman Best, and Jayden Brailey. But Newcastle’s fuel tanks were empty midway through the second half. His absence gave the NRL’s most wanted man another chance in the hot seat. Halfback Cleary returned to clubland with a point to prove. The Panthers did it all without Ivan Cleary in the box, after he was forced to miss the game on medical advice.

When you're a team that's rebuilding and you've mentally prepared yourself for some lean years, as Souths did in the early to mid-2000s, the Knights themselves did after Wayne Bennett left, or the Bulldogs are currently doing, you appreciate the victories when they come, and just try to make the best of it. There isn't really a precise reason for their drop in form, but after two straight wins to open the year, they've dropped nine of 11, with their only victories coming against the lowly Bulldogs and Warriors.
