Anger is brewing about a Queensland government proposal to log native forest near the Glass House Mountains just two years before it becomes conservation ...
The Palaszczuk government committed to transferring 20,000 hectares of state native forest to conservation land before the end of 2024, but has not confirmed what area will be saved prior to the blanket cut-off. Ferny Forest, which makes up 13 per cent of the Beerwah State Forest, was recommended for conservation in the report. A report by Protected Area Solutions, commissioned by the Queensland Conservation Council (QCC), found 70,000 hectares of native woodland across south-east Queensland should be saved immediately, two years before it is due to transition to conservation land. The purpose of the plan, the spokesperson said, was to ensure decisions about the future of timber harvesting in Queensland would support a sustainable industry that also delivered conservation outcomes. "The Queensland government continues to engage with a range of stakeholders including recreational forest users, local conservation groups, traditional owners, and others as part of its harvest planning activities," the spokesperson said. - Ferny Forest, which makes up 13 per cent of the Beerwah State Forest, was recommended for conservation in the report.
