LIVE AFL: 'Welcome back, skip' — Freo ERUPTS for Fyfe goal in epic Hawks showdown.
“They go coast to coast for the first time in a long time.... At the moment they haven’t had too much of an impact, both Fyfe and Brodie. “It’s great to see so many fans turn out to our game. Instead, the dual Brownlow Medallist was sent straight into the opening centre bounce. But they just lacked the polish and maturity that Justin Longmuir’s side had. Importantly, they made the most of their opportunities. Even though we’re not getting the wins, we’re pretty happy.’ But to do it for four quarters is another challenge again.” All-Australian contender Blake Acres set the tone for his side. This has been very, very rare all afternoon for the Dockers,” Lyon said. Fyfe, despite suggesting he would spend more time up forward in his return game, interestingly started the game exclusively in the midfield. “They’re three outstanding conversions that we’d expect from players at this level.
Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe says his return was a successful one and he was following the instructions of young guns like Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw.
We had to grind it out and it will be one of those wins that you appreciate at the end of the year. They told me where to set up in stoppages and that was a nice feeling.” “I feel like we are getting consistency around the stoppages. Dockers 82, Hawks 74 with 12 mins to go. Dockers 88, Hawks 75 with nine mins to go. Dockers 88, Hawks 82 with six mins to go. Travis Colyer has stepped up for the Dockers to snap a goal and extend the margin. Dockers 94, Hawks 82 with five mins to go. The Dockers were puffing and panting post game as the Hawks asked them every possible question but didn’t have the quality to keep with them in the second half. The Hawks are within a goal of the Dockers after Luke Breust marked and goaled from deep in the forward line. “I told the boys to treat me like a first-gamer and tell me where to go,” Fyfe told Fox Footy. I said to Caleb [Serong] and Andy [Brayshaw] to treat me like a first-gamer and set me up and they did that. The two-time Brownlow Medallist had 21 possessions and a goal in his first game of 2022 while the Dockers improved to 10-3 [win-loss] on the season.
Brisbane need a win to hold onto their top-two spot, but nothing will come easy against a St Kilda team with lofty aspirations of their own.
Fremantle turned for home with a handy 14-point edge, but the margin was just six when Luke Breust booted his second goal of the match with six minutes remaining. Fyfe had the chance to produce a memorable highlight late in the second quarter when he collected the ball in the pocket, but his dribble kick was never on track and went through for a behind. The Dockers booted the opening two goals of the match, but Hawthorn worked their way into the contest and made the most of their chances in attack.
Fremantle finally have their captain back, 321 days after the inspirational two-time Brownlow Medallist last played for the club.
“We want to start him in the middle of the ground and get him back to what he does best. He spent 25 of the 30-minute first quarter on the ground. The Dockers weren’t afraid to put Nat Fyfe straight into midfield either, with the champion starting at the first centre bounce of their clash with Hawthorn at Optus Stadium.
NAT Fyfe was the drawcard but it was Andrew Brayshaw who ended up being the hero as Fremantle overcame a brave Hawthorn to post a 13-point win at Optus ...
After just eight disposals in the first half, Acres came to life in Freo's six-goal third term. The superstar had 21 disposals – 16 of those handballs – and kicked a goal as he split time between midfield and the forward line. The 26-year-old had 13 disposals, including five contested possessions and three clearances, to go with a goal in a quarter that proved key to the Dockers' win. Importantly, Fyfe had 10 score involvements – only Caleb Serong and Walters had more – in a sign of things to come for the Dockers star. Fyfe had the chance to produce a memorable highlight late in the second quarter when he collected the ball in the pocket, but his dribble kick was never on track and went through for a behind. Jaeger O'Meara finished with a team-high 30 disposals and nine clearances for the Hawks, while James Sicily (nine marks) was a rock in defence.
It was clearances from Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw at crucial times, leadership from Jaegar O'Meara that helped to keep the Hawks in the game, unbelievable ...
- On that note, I have to make a special mention of Michael Walters – 300 goals as a small forward is a special effort. A six-goal to two third quarter was the result, and while the goals kicked were probably not how they would have been drawn up on the coaches board, they represented a Fremantle that had learned from the way they had lost – this was a team that would adapt to the conditions and play to them rather than trying to play through them. - At half-time, I had a chat to my wife and mentioned that the Hawks were winning by 10 points. What was interesting was the way that the Hawks beat the Dockers in the first half. Of course, today was no exception and in fact, Freo were able to turn a two-goal deficit into a two-goal lead in just 30 minutes. For the first half, this kept the Hawks in the game – their pressure was so high that it forced Freo into handballing further and further backwards until it meant a kick was not the natural end point of the play, but rather a ‘get the ball out of here’ manoeuvre. This was a Freo team that had scored just four and six goals in their two wet weather matches so far this season, and while they will have more wet weather games ahead of them, today’s effort where they were hungry and up for the fight should hold them in good stead. And the Hawks were very efficient – converting from two-thirds of their shots at goal – while the Dockers were wasteful behind centre, and seemed unwilling to trust their half-forward line to even present a contest, let alone halve it. Though the tackle numbers weren’t high – Freo led 73-63 – the pressure and intensity certainly was, meaning that kicks were not precise and instead were jammed on the boot more than placed to a teammate’s advantage. He’s a brute whose game is built around winning the ball in the contest, taking on two or three opponents, and then getting a possession out to a teammate. For the first 11 rounds this season, most Freo supporters I know have added one sentence to all of their braggadocio – “and we don’t even have Nat Fyfe yet”. Well, now they’ll no longer be able to say that because he’s back out there. With Freo being at home, and probably wanting to make a statement before the bye, a drubbing was certainly on the cards.
