Scotland v Armenia – LIVE updates (Scottish Daily Record)

Joaquin Caparros' men stunned Ireland at the weekend with a 1-0 win in Yerevan and arrive in Glasgow as group leaders. That offers Steve Clarke an opportunity ...

"We know all the Scotland players because we have watched a lot of matches. I don’t think he will change it in defence. Last week didn’t go well against Ukraine, but there's the chance to make up for that - at least a bit - against Armenia at Hampden tonight. The heartbreaking end to the Qatar journey coupled with a lacklustre display against Ukraine has made it a massive night for the players and boss at Hampden. A swift change of seat in the press box required at Hampden after the rain started coming through the roof and directly on to the laptop. There was a lot of headscratching when the Nations League was first launched but as the picture became clearer it was obvious it was a huge opportunity for Scotland - and one they took as Steve Clarke's men booked a place at Euro 2020 after those nerve-shredding shoot-out wins over Israel and Serbia. A bright start from the Scots though who have enjoyed most of the possession and are looking to out Armenia under pressure at every opprtunity. Seems like a matter of when and not if Scotland make the breakthrough after a really strong start. But he's been heavilty invovled so far and it looks like Scotland are in the mood, but need to get that first goal. What a moment for the right back and that should allow Steve Calrke to breathe a little easier, jst as Armenia were starting to frustrate. There's the breakthrough for Scotland and it's a debut goal for Anthony Ralston! The full-back drifts into the back post to meet Armstroing's excellent delivery, and plants a clever header back across Yurchenko and ito the far corner.

Match report as Scotland cure World Cup hangover with routine UEFA Nations League win over Armenia for perfect start to Group B1 campaign; Anthony Ralston ...

We did brilliantly tonight to come back after a tough result and hopefully we can continue in the right way." The Celtic full-back said: "It felt amazing to get my first start and my first goal. "It was important to refresh it and also important for the boys who played last week and had to go again. Clarke said afterwards: "It was important to get back to winning ways, start the next winning run and hopefully that was tonight. "The wing-backs were excellent, with Ralston in particular now giving Clarke plenty to consider moving forward. That is the next goal and Clarke already has it in his sights. It's every kid's dream as a footballer is to play and score for your country. "Under pressure following the manner of that 3-1 home defeat to Ukraine, this was an emphatic response. It is a role that Andy has really grown into and sometimes he doesn't quite get the mentions that maybe he should do. John put the perfect ball in and I just needed it to hit my head," McKenna said afterwards. "But I thought the captain was exceptional. There had been an air of despondency around Scottish football since the chance to go to Qatar later in the year was taken away.

Ralston and McKenna ease Scotland to cathartic win over Armenia (The Guardian)

Two first-half goals allowed Scotland to a 2-0 victory in Glasgow against a defence-minded opposition.

“He was good,” Clarke said. “It was a very good performance against a very defensive team,” Clarke said. With Joaquin Caparros’s visitors redefining the term “packed defence” it took concerted advances from Scotland’s two wing-backs to start unhinging the most obdurate of rearguards.
