The NSW Blues are favourites once again but the star-studded Queensland Maroons are expected to make the 2022 State of Origin series a thrilling one.

Plus New South Wales have best player in the game in, Teddy! WHO WINS & WHY? New South Wales. Their cohesion in the spine is key. WHO WINS & WHY? I think the Blues will win in a tight one. The forwards must dominate if we’re going to win because we’re lacking the strike out the back of Turbo and Latrell. NSW will be too hard for QLD to control in the slippery conditions at Accor Stadium. Add to that the attacking threat of an in-form Cameron Munster.

Why game one is 'vital' for New South Wales (Wide World of Sports)

Welcome to Wide World of Sports' live coverage of the opening match of the 2022 State of Origin series.

"It's vital, because it's the only home game we get, and game one in the series is always vital," Gould told Radio 2GB's Ben Fordham. Gould's 1994 side, which contained now-coach Brad Fittler at centre, is the only team in history to lose the opening match at home, but win the series with victories in games two and three away from home. Former New South Wales coach Phil Gould says tonight's opening match is "vital", given its the only time the Blues will play at home this series.

State of Origin 2022 Game 1: New South Wales Blues v Queensland ... (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: The 2022 series gets under way in Sydney with the Maroons looking to cause an upset against the heavily favoured Blues.

“I thought Cam Murray coming back from an operation, I thought it would be better bringing him in a little bit later and I like the balance of Reagan starting and bringing in Junior Paulo a little later. One of those, Harry Grant, will start from the bench after suffering an illness in the lead-up to the game. It is even about the Blues diverging from recent style to react to Queensland’s team selections. There’s also no shortage of conjecture over Jack Wighton starting ahead of Stephen Crichton in the centres. Enjoy the match and the blog. Brad Fittler has just been asked about those late changes to the NSW pack. Slater’s challenge is to generate the same passion in his charges that he exhibited during the most storied of Origin careers. The absence of Latrell Mitchell and Tom Trbojevic has brought the Blues back a bit I reckon. “When we grew up there wasn’t a visible person in front of us teaching us. It’s clear, dry, and cool in Sydney this evening. “We have focused on what we can control and that has been our preparation. “This team has been important to me since I was a four-year-old boy,” Slater said.

The rivalry of grenades getting thrown from one side of the border to the other. “The preparation and the coverage has never been more intense than what it is now and the players in response are pulling back. “...I’d like to think that we’re going to play well.” “The last quote anybody can remember was when Paul Gallen was paid $20,000 by the NRL to liven it up so he came out and called them two heads which just set Queensland alight. “Even in the lead-up to the game, nobody says anything,” he said. It’s expected to be a windy and wild affair in front of an expected sell-out crowd at Sydney’s Accor Stadium for Game 1.

Billy the man: Slater back to haunt Blues in epic Origin upset (The Sydney Morning Herald)

The kid who produced the miracle chip-and-chase try is now back as a man to taunt the Blues as Queensland took a giant step to winning this year's series ...

And when a bouncing ball came his way, he sprinted, kicked off his non-dominant right foot, allowing Dane Gagai to score and Valentine Holmes to give the Maroons an unlikely 6-4 half-time lead, but only after Junior Paulo had a try chalked off for obstruction from Cameron Murray. He left out Josh Addo-Carr, bamboozling most of the state, and the NRL’s entire marketing department, who had dozens of flags made up of the winger flying outside Accor Stadium on game night. One of Slater’s best mates, Cameron Smith, was laughing in the commentary box. Slater’s star man, Cameron Munster, looks like Justin Bieber these days with his mop of bleached blond hair. He chose a regular five-eighth in Jack Wighton at centre, and chose on the bench a rookie centre in Stephen Crichton to cover a number of positions ... and put him on to play centre for the hampered Kotoni Staggs (shoulder). This was Origin as Slater knew it, and how every NSW fan wished they never knew it, as the Maroons won in Sydney for the first time since when Slater was a player in 2017 with a famous 16-10 victory after Isaah Yeo was dragged down inches from the line on the last play of the night.

HIA call on wobbly Blues star baffles greats (Wide World of Sports)

"Oh no! Isaah Yeo has stumbled, and he's the key man for NSW. He'll be off for a head assessment," Blues great Andrew Johns said on Nine's coverage.

"I thought if you stumbled, you're automatically off." "Oh no! "Isaah Yeo obviously went down in that first tackle of the match, there's been almost five minutes gone, he stayed on the field but he has been checked by the trainer and he has been cleared," former Blues skipper Paul Gallen said.

Munster's $1m statement as cult hero rookie delivers perfect 10 ... (Fox Sports)

It was debutant delight for the Maroons in their 16-10 win over the Blues in Origin I. Reuben Cotter and Patrick Carrigan shone with perfect 10 performances ...

Finished the first half with 28 tackles — the most of any player — with zero misses. Finished the game with 49 tackles — equal first with Damien Cook — with three misses. Took the tough carries, chewed up the metres and got quick play the balls. Papalii took the first run of the game and the one that knocked Isaah Yeo off his feet. His is speed on the stroke of half time saved a potential Blues try when he won the race to a Kotoni Staggs chip and batted it over the dead ball line. Threw a couple of mistimed passes but wasn’t afraid to take on the line. Was quiet in the first half but got more involved in the second. A true Origin effort on both sides of the ball. Finished with 113 running metres, three tackle busts and 16 tackles with one miss. Finished with 105 metres off 12 runs and 21 tackles with just one miss. His name won’t be on the back page of the papers in Queensland but he deserves plenty of praise. He didn’t return until the final five minutes.

The biggest night on the rugby league calendar is finally here. Follow live for all the latest news and analysis from Sydney.

That’s a huge blow for the Maroons as Jack Wighton rings the bell of Lindsay Collins in a big way. Oh boy, Selwyn Cobbo. Finds an inch of space on his wing, turns it into a mile, sends the perfect kick back inside and it’s Dane Gagai pouncing for the Maroons. The rookie has arrived. Meanwhile, Holmes soars for the bomb and takes it safely, that’s good for his confidence. Just a messy play the ball. Turns on the jets and he bats it dead. We’re going well, we should be confident,” says Cherry-Evans as he leaves the field.

Billy's plan comes up trumps as bench runs riot; star halves deliver ... (Fox Sports)

Billy Slater led Queensland to a 16-10 win over New South Wales in his coaching debut on Wednesday night. While the star halves pairing of Cameron Munster ...

He joined the action in the 15th minute and his leg speed changed the momentum of the game. Grant may not have started but he proved to be the most important of the two hookers. That doesn’t happen without a coach instilling the right team culture. The veteran halfback had a couple of clunky moments with the ball but settled in as the game went on. But he should also be immensely proud of himself. It was a similar story for starting hooker Ben Hunt, who was replaced by Harry Grant half way through the first half and didn’t return until there was less than 15 minutes to go. The Roosters prop ran hard, tackled hard and got quick play the balls. Cameron Munster has arguably been in career-best form this season so no surprises that he came up with a man of the match performance in game one. Cherry-Evans wasn’t afraid to take on the line either and scored one of the easiest tries he’ll ever get. Gagai still pulled his weight and scored Queensland’s first points but he also missed a game-high of seven tackles. Selwyn Cobbo stepped into the Origin arena just three days after his 20th birthday and with just 19 NRL games under his belt — but you wouldn’t know it. A mixed performance from the Maroons’ backs.

Injury disaster strikes for Maroons young gun (Wide World of Sports)

Xavier Coates' State of Origin campaign lasted just under half an hour after a gruesome outcome in a tackle...

State of Origin is always a colourful affair, beautifully captured by the photographers at the ground. New South Wales captain James Tedesco is tackled by a pair of Maroons in the early stages of Origin I. The Blues made the ceremonial walk through the the tunnel from the Centre of Excellence. The Maroons star writhed in pain on the turf of Accor Stadium after turning his right ankle. Jeremiah Nanai looked bright in his State of Origin debut before he was forced off the field early on in the second half. Dane Gagai is no stranger to a State of Origin try, and was Queensland's first tryscorer in game one.

'Play of the game': The THREE 'big' QLD moments behind stunning Origin epic.

“If Val doesn’t make that decision to come in from the wing, that’s a try every week. “I know Stephen Crichton wasn’t, he wasn’t expecting Cameron Munster to strip the ball. But it’s the little moments that count in State of Origin.” He initially beat Cherry-Evans and then Reuben Cotter before chipping a small kick. “From the other side of the field, that could be the play of the game. What a player.” You don’t do one and the game gets away from you.” That’s a superstar. That was enormous. This bloke (Cherry-Evans) jumped on a ball late in the game when there was a half chance that they were going to score a try. “They’re little moments but they’re big moments. “That (Munster’s strip) was a big moment.
