The ball finds Mount, just to the side of the German box. England make five changes to the starting XI selected for the Hungary defeat. 3 min: Rudiger flicks the corner on at the near post. We had to get some of the players through the first game and rest some, so they were fully sharp for tonight. Sterling is sent into space down the inside-left channel, and his shot-cum-cross is deflected out for a corner. 11 min: England are down to ten for now, as further checks are run on Phillips. Musiala has a dig from the edge of the box. 7 min: The ball’s worked back to Kane, who lets rip towards the top right. 9 min: Schlotterbeck comes striding out from the back in Beckenbauerian fashion, and clips a pass wide right for Muller. As he does it, he clatters into Phillips. Or perhaps Phillips clatters into him. The whistle goes to stop play. Not sure where the England defenders are, but they can be thankful to Rice, who sticks to the side of Klostermann, ensuring the pass to release Havertz is never on. This is great fun, in the basketball style. 30 min: Trippier stretches to flick a defensive header out of play, then accidentally lands on the nearby Hoffman’s heel.

Southgate's substitutions and Kane's 88th-minute penalty rescued underwhelming England performance.
While Phillips’ issue came through a collision with Nico Scholotterbeck and it can be easy to read too much into a single 90 minutes, the amount of problems England picked up feels at least partly related to the scheduling of these four Nations League games at the end of a gruelling season. That meant the back three was gone, even if it proved successful in that Euro 2020 last-16 tie, and a more open 4-2-3-1 system made for a more open game. This was a case of the England bench seeing problems and fixing them, eventually at least. A taste for experimentation may have led to England’s first 90-minute defeat for 22 games against Hungary at the weekend but Southgate continued to chop and change, mindful that opportunities to do so before Qatar are limited. At one point, it appeared as though they would lose consecutive games for the first time in almost four years and fail to score back-to-back for the first time in five. Southgate’s in-game management has been arguably the most scrutinised element of his time in charge, culpable in both the famous Croatia and Italy defeats, but the introduction of Jack Grealish spurred his side on to take a point they could hardly say they deserved.

The Manchester City right back got just enough on a header back to Pickford then, but he was out of position and under pressure from Germany wingback Raum. Schlotterbeck and Phillips just had a collision that looked pretty painful for the Leeds man as he took a knee to his right thigh. He shoots low and warms Pickford's hands, but that was too close to the England goalkeeper to cause him any trouble. Maguire got dragged into a tangle with Havertz and was fortunate the Chelsea forward did not get a touch. Now Bellingham and Kane combine to flash the ball across the face of goal — Sterling can't get there for one of his trademark tap-ins. He lines up a sweet strike from 25 yards but Rudiger gets bravely in the way. Grealish again to the fore and he looks to find Kane. The man of the moment can't make contact. Saka gets hold of the loose ball and sends a rasping strike just wide. 45th minute +8: Maguire coughs up possession to Gundogan. The problem with that is you tend not to see it for a while afterwards. On the face of it, this was a return to the dribble-happy fantasy footballer of his Aston Villa days, and all those elements were there. 76th minute: Incredible save from Neuer! Grealish makes his presence felt again, this time delivering a super ball to the back post left footed. Darting in off the left of Germany’s front three, the 19-year-old was all over a match where he caused the visitors persistent headaches.
