Everything I Know About Love: did the TV show live up to Dolly ... (The Week UK)

This 'love letter to female friendship' may make older viewers feel like 'an anthropologist on Mars'

Maggie, “a fictionalised proxy for author” Alderton, is a “booze-fuelled dreamer, only kept from floating away by the anchor of her best friend and flatmate, the oppressively grounded Birdy”, The Independent’s Hilton continued. But there are “also deep lows that are the real markers of this decade”. While a host of male characters may be the romantic interests that dominate the women’s conversations, “the love story at the heart of this story has nothing to do with them”, said The Telegraph’s Halls. “Some may roll their eyes at Maggie’s privilege and narcissism”, but this “love letter to female friendship” is as “charming” as Alderton’s memoir.

And 'Paddington' too. But all isn't as it seems for the London-set adaptation of Dolly Alderton's celebrated memoir.

London landmarks aside, much of the show was actually filmed in Manchester. A number of fictional venues have been created especially for the show, including the kebab shop disco from episode one. The opening disclaimer at the beginning of each episode of Everything I Know About Love states that “this work is inspired by real life events and real people. But where is BBC’s Everything I Know About Love filmed?

As the TV adaptation of Dolly Alderton's bestselling memoir debuts on the small screen, one writer reflects on the nostalgic power of the show's costumes.

“I remember when Kate Moss did a collaboration with Topshop, which at the time was huge and I had about five of those things. “I often would just go and hang out in the costume department – all the clothes were so authentic. After all, if there’s anything that defined the 2010s in popular culture (at least in the realm I paid most attention to) it’s fashion.

Ever felt hopelessly uncool? Everything I Know About Love proves ... (The Independent)

On Monday, the long-awaited Everything I Know About Love premiered on BBC 1 (with all episodes also now available on BBC iPlayer). Adapted from author Dolly ...

It’s impossible for anyone to be boring, by dint of the fact that we’re all humans on this earth with our own unique brains, personalities and souls. To my relief, Maggie tells Birdy that she is fun; and Maggie’s right. Being “fun” — and, with it, being “cool” — is so often categorised as wanting to get drunk all the time. I should add: I’m 28, and the characters in the show are 24. Maggie is the show’s protagonist, and it’s no secret that she’s based on Alderton. But despite the routine close-ups and regular voiceovers offering us insights into her internal monologue, I don’t relate to Maggie in the slightest. When teenage Maggie and Birdy are looking out at the London cityscape — and the adulthood it represents — Maggie sees excitement and possibilities, while Birdy sees “something completely terrifying”. So did I. I still do.

Everything I Know About Love's Amara shows how exhausting it can ... (Stylist Magazine)

For the first couple of episodes, Amara and Nell offer us smart quips and dialogue around dating, advice and all the other things witty girlfriends come out ...

While Everything I Know About Love is very much not the kind of television show I was expecting to dissect for its social and racial issues, it does underline a common experience through Amara. Dealing with friends that simply “don’t see colour” or are tone-deaf is more commonplace than many people realise. She attends her dance class and the teacher is shocked to learn that Amara – who is a complete natural – is not with a dance company. No matter how well-meaning they can be, there can often be a need to educate or play down experiences because some friends can’t quite grasp that this is the way the world is. I was told explicitly by someone high up in the industry that I would never make it as a contemporary dancer.” Or that when men chat shit to me on dating apps, it’s not just a bad batch. But Amara’s not quitting her job because she still has rent to pay, something Maggie just doesn’t understand. We come to learn about this not through Amara’s conversations with Maggie, but instead with a fellow Black female dancer that she watches perform in a London show. Instead, she turns the situation around to herself: “Do you think anyone will have a fetish for lanky white girls who talk too much and stop giving blowjobs after a month?” Amara wants to say more and looks visibly uncomfortable but the conversation moves swiftly on, as is the way with Maggie. But even so, her recognition of this fact doesn’t make her any less confusing and – this may be an unpopular opinion – annoying as a character. “Give up my dreams and sell out for an Asos wardrobe,” Maggie replies. If, like us, you’ve already blitzed your way through Dolly Alderton’s new series, Everything I Know About Love, you’ll be filled to the brim with a whole host of thoughts.

Where is BBC's Everything I know About Love filmed? (Manchester Evening News)

The programme is set in Camden and is predominantly shot in London. However, Manchester also provided some locations for the series' scenes.

And even though the ground was wet and cold, we were still just having so much fun." My favourite scene to film was The Primrose Hill [scene] - rolling down Primrose Hill. However, while many famous London landmarks are included, not all of the filming took place in the capital.

How Everything I Know About Love sets up Maggie and Birdy's future (digitalspy.com)

Dolly Alderton's tale of friendship and love in Everything I Know About Love has landed on the BBC – but how does Maggie and Birdy's tale unfold?

The poignant speech touches Maggie, who despite her New York adventure, has had Birdy consistently on her mind throughout. So much so, she decides to stay on a little longer, missing Birdy's final day in the house as she moves out. Breaking her phone, she's stranded by herself and, without the lifeline of her friends for the first time, Maggie quickly struggles. It culminates in a massive row where Birdy announces she's planning on moving out of the house and into one with her boyfriend. When she lands, she's met by her mum, who'd been tipped off by Nell that she might need someone. Keeping an eye on the posh and entitled cast is more than enough to keep her occupied, and she soon falls in love with the city.

Ah yes, the $80 TopShop faux leather jacket that at least one friend owned, perhaps two, and you definitely borrowed it at some point. Seriously, did you even live in that time if you didn't have a butt-grazing, tight-fitting sparkling mini worn only for special occasions? We begin with this humble fringe jacket worn by the show's lead, Maggie, who is largely based on Dolly Alderton herself. But Alderton and Everything I Know About Love's costume designer, Matthew Price managed to salvage this pile of relics—bubble dresses, thick belts and colour-blocked tees et al.—for this glorious onscreen triumph. There's dating mishaps, awkward friendship dynamics, and the ever lingering desire to find your calling. Dolly Alderton's new book-to-television series, Everything I Know About Love is a sartorial reminder of the millennial's roaring 20s era.
