Russia-Ukraine war: what we know on day 103 of the invasion (The Guardian)

Putin warns that Moscow will hit new targets if west supplies Ukraine with long-range missiles as Kyiv reels from first attack in more than a month.

Nato kicked off nearly a two-week US-led naval exercise on the Baltic Sea on Sunday with more than 7,000 sailors, airmen and marines from 16 nations, including Finland and Sweden whom aspire to join the military alliance. Ukrainian forces havecounterattacked and retaken half of the city of Sievierodonetskin the east of the country, officials said. Russiastruck Ukraine’s capital Kyiv with missilesearly on Sunday for the first time in more than a month. The comments were made in response to a pledge from the US went through with the delivery of Himars rocket artillery that the White House promised last week. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Serbia has been cancelled after countries around Serbia closed their airspace to his aircraft, according to local media reports. Britain is tosupply long-range rocket artillery to Ukraine, including a handful of tracked M270 multiple launch rocket systems, which can hit targets up to 80km (50 miles) away.

Ukraine war: the US and UK missile systems which will challenge ... (The Conversation US)

Pledges by the US and UK to supply longer-range artillery is really good news for Ukraine, but bad news for the invading Russians.

This makes the Himars a very formidable addition to their armoury. They were very pleased to get hold of 90 excellent M777 guns from the US, plus a few more from Canada which are already proving effective. The reason the Ukrainians were so vocal in their efforts to get these systems was to reach positions far further behind Russian lines than the guns they presently have. For any army – particularly the Russians whose army is not built for operations with any kind of extended supply lines – this is difficult. So crews are trained to move very quickly (“bug out”) from a firing position as soon as a “fire mission” is completed on a target. A friend of mine, Steve Weiss, who served as an infantryman in the second world war and endured far too much artillery, said that this scene from the television series Band of Brothers comes closest to capturing its terrifying effect.

Russia-Ukraine latest news: Mariupol shut down over potential ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Ukrainian authorities say the Russian occupation's administration in Mariupol has shut down the city for quarantine over a possible cholera outbreak.

In the Luhansk region there are many cities with a situation comparable to Mariupol: now the Russians are levelling Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.” But now the situation has worsened a little for us again," Luhansk regional governor Serhiy Gaidai told national television. A Russian diplomatic source told news agency Interfax there had been no choice but to cancel the visit. A potential health crisis in Mariupol is exacerbated by the fact that most of the city’s infrastructure has been obliterated by Russian air strikes. "We can't just break off diplomatic relations and stop talking to each other." - A Ukrainian counter-attack is “blunting” the “operational momentum” of Russian forces in the contested city of Severodonetsk, the UK Ministry of Defence said A few months later, the exhausted, under-supplied French troops eventually retreated and were crushed by the Russian army. It also demonstrated "he has total trust in his army" and served to heighten the contrast between his leadership style and that of his Russian opponent Vladimir Putin. Russia's Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities website appeared to have been hacked on Sunday, with an internet search for the site leading to a "Glory to Ukraine" sign in Ukrainian. The position of Ukrainian forces fighting in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk has "worsened a little", the regional governor said today. The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog has said the body is "developing the modalities" for an international mission of experts it hopes to send to Zaporizhzhia, the Russian-held nuclear power plant in south-east Ukraine. Putin has said that Ukraine could use the ports of Mykolayiv and Odesa for food exports, and insisted that Russia would not use the mine clearance situation to launch "some attacks from the sea".

If Russian forces were to take control of the city, it would be a symbolically significant win for the Kremlin after its troops have struggled in other parts of the country. Schinas thinks that many of these refugees may in the long run not return to their homeland. Earlier, he said that Ukraine had clawed back territory in recent days to control about half the city after Russia held about 70 percent last week. Let us continue to stand shoulder to shoulder as an alliance.” The world was slow to respond, he said. “The world has come together in support of the defense of Ukraine against a determined invader,” Milley said. In a televised interview at the weekend, Putin threatened to order wider attacks if the West sends long-range weapons, although he did not elaborate. Britain said Monday it will send Ukraine multiple-launch rocket systems that can strike targets up to 50 miles away, as Ukrainian forces seek to fend off Russian attacks in the country’s east. An estimated 20 million tons of wheat are stuck in Ukraine, unable to be shipped through Black Sea ports. “Little thought is given to practical ways to promote close ties to the E.U. in many areas and strengthen Ukraine,” he said. “The same goal unites us — a strong, independent and economically successful Ukraine,” he said in an interview with Kronen-Zeitung. “All our efforts are mainly focused on ending the Russian war of aggression. Speaking after a visit to front-line areas in Ukraine’s east on Sunday, Zelensky said things could become very difficult if Russian breaks through in the Donbas region.

At a bar in Kyiv, patrons watched the World Cup qualifier match between Wales and Ukraine, a contest delayed three months by the Russian invasion. Russian forces stepped up artillery attacks on Sievierodonetsk, said Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk. The attack has set Ukrainian forces back after a counteroffensive. "We still need to understand that the war is in an intense phase," she said. The barrages have exacted a heavy toll on the Ukrainian army: the Ukrainian government has said that as many as 100 soldiers are dying every day. He also offered a cryptic statement of support, saying: “We brought something to the military. The Ukrainian supply lines into the area, along roads that run through plains and are exposed to nearby Russian troops, are often attacked. Residents erected wooden barricades on the road leading into the town in the first week of the war but they proved no match for Russian tanks. Dmytro Orlov, whom Ukraine recognizes as the legitimate mayor of Enerhodar, wrote on Telegram that Russians are trying to tackle the budding insurgency by targeting regular civilians. In the past month, Ukrainian partisans claim, insurgents have attacked Russian trains and killed dozens of Russian soldiers, as well as supporting the Ukrainian military's counterattacks. Enerhodar had a population of 50,000 before the war and was home to many of the people who work at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest. In recent days, Ukrainian forces have launched a series of counterattacks in the regions. In a rarity, both Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed the blasts, which struck deep inside Russian-controlled territory.

AP Exclusive: Ukraine recovers bodies from steel-plant siege (ABC News)

Russia has begun turning over the bodies of Ukrainian fighters killed at the Azovstal steelworks, the fortress-like plant in the destroyed city of Mariupol.

Asked about the war raging on the European continent, Shay said, "It is a very sad situation.” Viacheslav Drofa said the remains of his elder brother, Dmitry Lisen, did not appear to be among those recovered so far. It said the two sides exchanged 320 bodies in all, each getting back 160 sets of remains. But relatives of soldiers killed at the plant discussed the process with The Associated Press. Zelenskyy said more than than 2,500 fighters who defended the plant are being held prisoner by the Russians, and Ukraine is working on getting them released It gave no details on where the bodies were recovered from. The last Azovstal holdouts finally relinquished the plant in May, marching out without weapons and carrying their wounded. The mother of a soldier killed in a Russian airstrike on the plant said the Azov Regiment telephoned her and said that her son’s body might be among those that were transferred to Kyiv. The mother did not want her or her son to be identified by name, saying she feared that discussing the recovery process might disrupt it. The brother of an Azov fighter missing and feared dead in the steelworks told the AP that at least two trucks of bodies from Azovstal were transferred to a military hospital in Kyiv for identification. The recovery of the fighters’ remains from the Azovstal ruins has not been announced by the Ukrainian government, and Russian officials have not commented. Meanwhile, Russian forces continued to fight for control of Sievierodonetsk, an eastern Ukrainian city that is key to Moscow’s goal of completing the capture of the industrial Donbas region. Dozens of fighters’ bodies recovered from the bombed-out mill’s now Russian-occupied ruins have been transferred to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, where DNA testing is underway to identify the remains, said Maksym Zhorin, a military commander and former leader of the Azov Regiment.

In the backdrop of these failures, Russian officials publicly state that Moscow is committed to its “ special military operation” and will see it through till its goals in Ukraine have been achieved. “Russia is now achieving tactical success in the Donbas. Russia's Combat Power in Decline in Ukraine, Counterattack ... (Newsweek)

Luhansk authorities claim Ukrainian troops have retaken parts of Sievierodonetsk over the past couple of days.

Russian forces also continue to make "slow but significant advances" along the country's eastern border with Ukraine. By the end of last week, Russian forces controlled 70 percent of the city, according to local authorities. But now the situation has worsened a little for us again," Haidai said, as quoted by Reuters. According to the BBC, citing Russian officials, Russian forces are attempting to bring about the "complete liberation" of the Donbas, an area populated by Russian-backed separatists. But as Russian forces focus on capturing the entire city of Sievierodonetsk and fighting the Ukrainian counteroffensive there, there's an opportunity for Ukrainian troops to make gains on other fronts still held by Russian troops, like in the Kharkiv region and the Kherson area, the ISW writes. The ISW confirmed that the Ukrainian counterattack has "pushed Russian troops back to the eastern outskirts of the city and out of southern settlements."
