Joe Root ensures panic and caution give way to sense of the unknown (The Guardian)

After three days of absurdist back and forth, the first Test ended with England calmly and efficiently knocking off the runs.

They tick off the runs required without any alarm, the target gently nearing with every over, and a sense not of learned panic and caution but rather of the unfamiliar creeps into the stands. England’s batting, as if to dutifully reintroduce itself with the duo, rolled out their old trick of creating holes inside the holes they were already in to undo most of the good work the first time around. A space of constriction at the loosest of times, the threat of a Test that is England’s to lose is the other end of the journey. As if to illustrate it explicitly, a trapped bee manically bounces off the lights, darting from rail to rail for any form of escape. It is this sense of borderline panic and caution that Lord’s tends to create exponentially the closer you get to the ground on days such as this. This year New Zealand fans are there too, in 20‑year‑old Black Cap shirts as a sign they come in peace, along with the rest of the cricketing miscellany.

Prolific Joe Root races to 10000 Test runs in record time (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Still only 31, he has a realistic shot at Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record for most runs in Tests.

Considering Root's current form and the fact that he has recently been freed from the burden of captaincy, it is entirely possible that he makes a strong push for Tendulkar's record in the years to come. However, the home numbers for Root pale when compared to those of the other three: he averages 52.93, while the other three average more than 60. Root is also the first among the current Fab Four to get to 10,000 runs. Leave aside the turbulence of his first 20 Tests, and his highest average was 57.11 after his 24th Test, in April 2015. Root's journey to the milestone has had its share of ups and downs, as is inevitable in aTest careerwhich has lasted almost 10 years. WhenJoe Rootclipped Tim Southee for a couple in the 77th over of England's chase at Lord's, not only did he reach his 26th Test hundred, he also became only the 14th player to score 10,000 runsin Test cricket.

Joe Root on Sunday became just the 14th batsman and only second from England to reach the landmark total of 10000 career Test runs.

"It had become a very unhealthy relationship to be honest, the captaincy and me. He was also the joint youngest player to score 10,000 Test runs, equalling former England captain Alastair Cook's record of 31 years 157 days. Joe Root on Sunday became just the second England batter to score 10,000 Test runs during a match-winning hundred against New Zealand at Lord's. The 31-year-old Yorkshireman may have left the leadership role, but his knack for scoring runs doesn't seem to have affected a bit. Root remains far and away England's best batter at present, and his hundred was the difference between the two sides at the 'Home of Cricket'. But it wasn't just that. England went 1-0 in the Test series, thanks to Root's sublime ton. His composed 115 not out steered England who had been faltering at 69 for four, to the 277-run target, as the hosts won by five wickets over the World Test champions with more than a day to spare.

Most Test runs: Why Joe Root can beat Sachin Tendulkar's record of ... (iNews)

At the age of 31 and now unburdened by the captaincy, the Yorkshireman may well be entering the peak of his career, writes Chris Stocks.

“I said ‘mate just concentrate on your batting now, you don’t have all the extra responsibility on your shoulders. Speaking before the first Test against New Zealand, England’s new captain spoke of the approach he was taking to easing Root back into the ranks. “It had become a very unhealthy relationship to be honest, the captaincy and me,” he said. The stress on him as captain within those environments would have been extreme and even through all the speculation over his future, he managed to keep churning out the runs. Because Joe has got so many low-risk scoring options, pretty much through 360 degrees, he will often get to 30 off 40 balls.” In 2021, Root scored 1,708 runs – the third most by anyone in a single calendar year.

Where does Joe Root rank among England's greatest batters? (ESPNcricinfo.com)

He's up there with the likes of Hutton, May, Gooch and Cook. Like his team-mates seem to think, might he be the greatest of them all?

This allowed more time to react to the uncertain bounce of the ball and more time to respond to its speed. The innings was a masterpiece, one of which any player, from any age, would have been proud. When stumps were drawn that evening, England needed just 61.Ben Foakeshad become to Root what Root had been to Stokes. When cricketers use the phrase "bat in partnerships" this is exactly what they mean. All the best players can sense this and most move in for the kill. The pitch at Lord's was tricky, offering swing and seam to the bowlers and suggestions of uneven bounce and pace. Previously the ball had to pitch on the stumps and be going on to hit them, which takes some bowling. The clarion call on uncovered pitches was for "soft hands", meaning a loose grip and a gentle method of letting the ball come to you before dropping it safely at your feet. On uncovered pitches and before the introduction of helmets, the tendency was to play back. These were wonderful batters during something of a golden age for English cricket, and the legend of each lives on in the hearts of those for whom cricket is so much more than just a game. None of them, however, were better thanJoe Root. The current players like to refer to Root as the best English batter of all time. In the summer of 1952,England played four Test matches against India, winning the first three comprehensively and watching the rain fall for much of the fourth. These past four days the United Kingdom has celebrated the 70-year reign of Her Majesty the Queen with gusto.
