Each decade will be brought to life through music, fashion, vehicles and dances. She has since ridden in it only two other times — for her Silver and Golden Jubilees. Members of the royal family, including the queen, are not expected to take part in the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. It is intended for the people of the country and Commonwealth to celebrate Queen Elizabeth with music and street performances to cap off the four-day event. "The Time of Our Lives" portion of the pageant is to display how pop culture has evolved since Queen Elizabeth took the throne. Queen Elizabeth’s 18th century Gold State Coach will be paraded through the streets of London during the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. Although the queen will not be along for the ride, the palace has said it will be projecting past images of the queen in the coach to the windows of the carriage. The finale of the festivities celebrating the Queen is the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. Unlike previous events, the final celebration is open to the public.

Buckingham Palace was transformed into a huge movie screen for tens of thousands of people who cheered the Queen, and saw a galaxy of stars performing.

On Saturday, five of her former racehorses were paraded, and 40 jockeys who have ridden for the queen formed a guard of honor before the national anthem was played. “Her majesty is well known for her sense of humor, so it should be no surprise that she decided to take part in tonight’s sketch,’’ the palace said. Despite the queen’s absence, spirits were high during an event that culminated with appearances by the monarch’s son and grandson. The sketch featured the queen having a cream tea with British national treasure Paddington Bear at Buckingham Palace. "Mankind has benefitted from unimaginable technological developments and scientific breakthroughs. The long-time mystery was solved Saturday when the British monarch made the second star turn of her career, appearing in a mini-movie to kick off a concert celebrating her 70 years on the throne.

She did not attend a thanksgiving service at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral on Friday because of mobility issues. Others were merely glad for the four-day weekend and a chance to indulge in one of the nation's favorite pastimes: drinking. At around the same time, the palace also announced that she would have to miss Friday's thanksgiving service at St. Paul's Cathedral after experiencing "some discomfort" following the day's events. And you bring us together to celebrate moments of pride, joy and happiness.” The queen will not ride in it today, however. Even the weather is suitably British, with rain and temperatures topping the mid-60s across the country. The queen, 96, did not attend the concert and has not made any public appearances since Thursday when she was seen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with other members of the royal family. On the third day of events to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th year on the throne, Charles told the crowd of thousands that she had “been with us in our difficult times. While jubilee fever might seem inescapable in the U.K., polling by YouGov suggests most Britons will actually be ignoring the pomp and ceremony. As expected, she also missed the Derby horse race at Epsom Downs, southwest of London, on Saturday. And she was also absent for the Platinum Party at the Palace that night. She also made an unexpected showing later that day to light a beacon outside the gates of nearby Windsor Castle, one of thousands lit that evening in her honor across the U.K. Only 14 percent said they definitely would.

But perhaps the lack of interest should come as no surprise to organisers. I won’t begrudge people a good time. I’m sick of it. “He said at the end how great it was that everyone comes together this weekend,” she said. For those suffering from jubilee fatigue, it will be a welcome end to the seemingly never-ending displays of pageantry and sycophantic declarations of affection for the monarchy. Elizabeth II has been on the throne for 70 years, as I am sure you have heard. She is 96 years old. “We see it with neighbours, right? Let’s hope we don’t do that. People who don’t know each other are out having fun.” There also seemed to be nobody in attendance at the screening of events in the centre of Perth. People are gathering for a Big Jubilee Lunch on Windsor’s Long Walk as part of the platinum jubilee celebrations.

Two British icons, at the same table, discussing a mutual love for marmalade — or should we say “ma’amalade” sandwiches. A message reading “Thank you Ma’am” lit up the sky above Buckingham Palace Saturday night as a star-studded music concert unfolded. Emotional crowd members told The Washington Post that the queen has been “a constant for 70 years in a very changing and frightening world." On the ground, a parade starred 1,400 troops, hundreds of horses and a swarm of royal super fans. The Times of London called him the “royal jester," while The Sun could only find one, very British word for his display: cheeky. In the skies over Buckingham Palace, drones formed the shapes of floating teacups and giant corgis.

Pomp and circumstance at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee (CBS News)

Meanwhile at Buckingham Palace, this is the way royal milestones – like, 70 years on the throne – are proclaimed now, reports correspondent Mark Phillips.

Phillips asked, "She's more than the Queen of the United Kingdom. She's been described as kind of Queen of the world. It's an affectionate tribute to a hereditary monarch who has hung around, done her job, and – somehow – embodied the national spirit. Among the appreciative crowds was Donna Werner, from New Fairfield, Connecticut. Phillips asked, her, "Coming from the U.S., a country that went to some special effort to get rid of this monarchy, what brought you back to it?" "As we've all been locked away for two years, to dance and to sing and to eat together, it's really important. "In many ways she is a sort of national timepiece," said Robert Hardman, whose latest book on the royals is "Queen of Our Times." There are different ways of looking at this Jubilee. It's a harkening back to an imagined romantic age of princes and princesses. "There's a sort of timelessness to the Queen," Hardman said. Now she's brought that same steeliness and expertise to her job as queen." But there is still a sort of timelessness to that aura." And not just for the thousands of patriotic Brits who turned out for these events. Again, Charles was there on her behalf, with the future Queen Camilla. And William, the next in line, with Kate. And (perhaps stealing the headlines) Harry and Meghan. The couple, now estranged from the family and in self-imposed exile in California, were allowed this cameo in the Jubilee show. This Jubilee has been a bit of a royal shell game.

Platinum jubilee: How Buckingham Palace balcony became key to ... (The Independent)

It is where the firm is at its 'most visible but also at its most strategic,' says one expert, as these six historic moments might suggest...

The country was two years into a period of considerable hardship and the Queen realised that if she had dozens of hangers-on, it could have gone very awry and raised a lot of questions about who was footing the bill. Yet the balcony moment arguably showed the Queen at her most astute when it came to reading the public mood. George VI – who had remained living at the palace despite it being bombed nine times – was right alongside him to revel in (and become explicitly associated with) the victory. With cigar in mouth and having apparently partaken a drink, the PM had already addressed Londoners from the Ministry of Health balcony earlier that day. Yet if the public display of affection was entirely off-the-cuff, it arguably couldn’t have been better scripted. Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasise and maintain their place at the heart of the nation.” “And it was ours because we were young.” He visited troops 450 times and, famously, changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the more anglicised Windsor. When HG Wells later called him “uninspiring and alien”, he took some offence. The appearance was the first of what is generally considered a “good war” for the king. From war victory celebrations to wedding kisses, the balcony has become one of the royal’s most effective bits of kit in both engaging Britons and entwining itself within the fabric of the nation. Yet perhaps six key moments show just how crucial the platform has become to continuing the royal story, while this year’s appearance may indicate the future of the monarchy. “The cheering was terrific [but] please God it may be soon over.”

Guardian photojournalists share their experiences of Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations including beach, street and park parties from Glasgow to ...

I’m fairly sure Glasgow is the only place that had a techno dance party in the middle of the day to celebrate the queen. The craning of the necks to get a better view, the clambering on to railings, walls and trees to get find a vantage point. I am a republican at heart and overall very indifferent to the idea of monarchy. It is one of those times when the presence of the camera-wielding media is expected and ignored. The power of football here (Celtic v Rangers) seems to still be so divisive that it feels slightly controversial to celebrate either way. Ironically, as I returned home to my local village, the weather eased and I found a proper street party in full flow. I am also fascinated by how many people use their smartphones as an extension of their eyes. Once again, people didn’t seem to care much about the jubilee – it was just an excuse to head to the beach for sunset. Later on, I headed to a beach party in Holywell Bay organised by the local surf lifesaving club. The river banks were lined with people waving. It was a magical spectacle. Driving around Cornwall on Saturday, you’d have thought the Queen’s jubilee had been cancelled.

It was an uplifting finale to a massive street pageant celebrating the queen’s life and highlighting Britain’s diversity.

The jubilee was "an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last 70 years, as we look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm", she said in a message on Wednesday. A spectacular light show illuminated the palace and the night sky above it on Saturday, including images of a corgi, a handbag and a teapot. A running theme has been the dramatic social, political and technological changes in Britain and the world since the Queen came to the throne — and her constant presence through it all. "While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family," she said. In a statement issued shortly after, the monarch said she had been "humbled and deeply touched" by the turnout for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations and "inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship that has been so evident in recent days".
