'Don't you want to be him!': 19yo star's epic clutch play sinks Hawks in 'crazy classic'

There was a big injury scare at the start of the third term when Hawks veteran Jack Gunston’s foot got stuck in a tackle. When the Pies needed a hero, 19-year-old Ollie Henry stood up. “They‘re young, they’re still learning and they’ve got total blind faith in their coach. Butler put through the set shot from the top of the goalsquare to make it five goals in a row and give his side the lead for the first time in the match, having trailed by as much as 30 points at one stage. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter and the Hawks having kicked four unanswered goals to close in on the Pies, Darcy Moore was penalised for contact below the knees on Sam Butler after a defensive effort in his defensive goalsquare to rush the ball through for a behind. A 30-point margin was clawed back by Hawthorn before a Sam Butler goal put them in the lead for the first time of the day and marked a fifth consecutive goal to Mitchell‘s men. That makes you susceptible to big highs and big lows and they’ve had massive lows - last week was one of them - but when they get rolling they’re pretty irrepressible.” And normally crazy stuff.” However the Pies regained the lead on the three quarter-time siren, with Ollie Henry kicking a set-shot goal to give the Pies a five-point advantage at the final change, despite the Hawks breaking even at contested possession and clearance in the term. After looking vulnerable at stages in the second term, it was the Hawks that got on top in the third term, booting four goals on the trot to pinch the lead. Ginnivan once again was at the centre of controversy after a free kick for a push in the back was paid to him by a non-officiating umpire. The Magpies blitzed the Hawks early to lead by as much as 24 points in the second term before the Hawks kicked seven of eight goals to take the lead early in the fourth term.

Hot Pies back in top eight after downing Hawks in Sunday classic (AFL)

Hot Pies back in top eight after downing Hawks in Sunday classic ... WINTER has arrived and it has delivered Collingwood back into the top eight following a ...

Unfortunately, McInnes didn’t finish the game after dislocating his shoulder in the second half. It was all Hawthorn in the wet, a vastly different looking side to the one that was touched up by the Gold Coast Suns in hot and slippery conditions in the Northern Territory last Saturday night. Mitch Lewis kicked his third from 55 metres minutes later, before Sam Butler converted a contentious free kick from a Darcy Moore slide to put the Hawks in front for the first time 16 minutes into the third quarter. But finally, after seven weeks, Ned Reeves re-emerged at the MCG on Sunday, for the first time since he departed the same patch of grass on Easter Monday with his shoulder hanging out. Mitch Lewis isn’t Charlie Curnow or Tom Lynch, but the emerging spearhead showed he is a key part of Hawthorn's future by producing another brilliant display, finishing with four goals to move to 27 from nine games – equal 9th in the Coleman Medal race alongside Charlie Cameron. The Collingwood goal sneak drew a dubious free kick before kicking from outside 50 to put the Magpies on the board in typical Jack Ginnivan fashion.

Oliver Henry needed two cracks at it but his late goal has helped Collingwood bolster their AFL finals hopes with a gripping four-point win over Hawthorn.

Butler's go-ahead goal for Hawthorn in the third quarter will be a major talking point after a non-controlling umpire paid a free kick for contact below the knees against Moore from almost 50 metres away. Reef McInnes was a late inclusion for Collingwood when Jamie Elliott withdrew through illness but the young forward was substituted out with a shoulder injury after a failed spoiling attempt on Dylan Moore. But Hawthorn kicked the opening four goals of the second half and snatched the ascendancy when Sam Butler was gifted a controversial free kick for contact below the knees, paid against Darcy Moore in the goal square.

The Hawks had 48 kicks and just 15 handballs in the third term, and amassed 42 contested possessions. Meanwhile, Daicos was his side’s best player across four quarters. But the game changed after half-time. But the non-officiating umpire blew his whistle and paid a free kick against Moore, giving Butler a certain goal, which put the Hawks in front of the first time for the afternoon. The hero for Collingwood, however, was Ollie Henry. He kicked his first goal after the three-quarter-time siren to put the Pies back in front and after the Hawks kicked two to start the final stanza, Jordan De Goey and then Henry kicked the final two goals to hold on for a four-point win. But Hawthorn came out of the sheds a different side in the second half, kicking four straight goals to take the lead for the first time midway through the third quarter.

Collingwood has pulled off another heart-stopping victory by defeating Hawthorn by four points in a tight contest at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

In the end, the Magpies held on by the skin of their teeth to win and go 7-5 on the season and sit inside the top eight. Just as the Magpies had snatched the lead back, the Hawks started off the final term in fine fashion, booting the first two goals to lead late into the game before the momentum swung back the opposite way. With the rain falling, Hawthorn managed to edge their noses in front late in the third term before Ollie Henry goaled on the siren to give Collingwood the lead at the final break.

Collingwood v Hawthorn - The Doc's Autopsy - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

For the Pies, since being handed an eight-goal dressing down by the Bulldogs, they've come out and have taken down Fremantle in WA and Carlton last week – both ...

I think he’s got a good case to answer there – Ginnivan kicked two in this game, but got closely checked for the most part of the game. Solid clearance work by Taylor Adams in this one, he led all Pies on the ground with seven clearances for the match, but I liked the link-up work of Jack Crisp more. Now we’ve heard a lot of talk about the game becoming over officiated, and this is a key contributing factor to the claim. His ability to position himself for the intercept has been a noticeable improvement this year and he had some very good moments in this respect. A lot of people are asking about him as an All-Australian, after this game, it’s certainly not out of the question. It was a massive performance and one that will reaffirm his favouritism for the Rising Star award – coming of age performance? What has impressed me with his game this year is that he’s finding additional layers of how to hurt the opposition. But this was the best game of his career so far. It’s been a massive turnaround from the young man, and I must stress that he’s only 19 and in his 19th career game. Having seen his game against the Bulldogs a few weeks ago, he looked shot of all confidence in even the simpler of shots. Hawthorn looked stronger for most of the second half, but the Pies dug deep and recorded another big win to propel themselves into the eight. But they are a hard team to get a gauge on, having been belted by Gold Coast last week and falling off the wagon against Essendon a few weeks earlier.
