Surviving Summer season 1 review - more mediocre teen fare (Ready Steady Cut)

Surviving Summer season 1 review - Australia delivers another solid younger-skewing teen sports drama, but it avoids making big waves.

There’s even a social media influencer on the come-up, but I suppose you can’t make a show about the youth these days without including one of those. well, another Australian teen series aimed at a younger-skewing audience. Coming pretty hot on the heels of Maverix, another Australian teen series aimed at a younger-skewing audience, Surviving Summer is…

Surviving Summer Review: The Same Old Coming-of-Age Tale (Leisurebyte)

Surviving Summer is a stale story with a new execution. Regardless, however, in the end, Surviving Summer is a mixed bag. Surviving Summer is about Summer, a teenage girl who is a rebel. Ari, the male lead, is sweet and his background and the way he overcomes his obstacles and trauma is hopeful and might be inspiring to some. The surf sequences and the competition make for good content that adds to the watchability of the show. It’s like a few other shows on the streaming platform that have the exact same story, maybe with a few changes here and there, and focus on a rebellious teen who just can’t get their lives right and then end up at a place that changes the trajectory of their lives.

Pop culture is cool, but have you ever tried analyzing it through a historical and cultural lens so that you can not only understand the content more deeply? Some of their more passive conversations can feel a tad stilted sometimes, but there are some really funny line deliveries throughout, and on a whole, I’d be glad to watch any of them in something again. The plot is thin at the end of the day. But Ari was badly injured last year and the relationship between the four best friends hasn’t been the same since none of them came to visit in the hospital.

'Surviving Summer' Ending, Explained: Does Ari Meet Summer ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

Sounds like a movie we have seen before? But surprisingly, the storyline manages to hold its own. Set against a surfing background, the show explores how Summer ...

Watching Poppy in the show was a pure delight, and she is one of the most inspiring characters in a show with a fluff theme and a realistic execution. Before Ari goes to his competition, he is looking for Summer as he wants her to see him, but finds out from his parents that she left for the airport an hour ago and also left a letter for them where she confesses that she was responsible for him going to the party and riding the waves. He goes to his parents and confesses to them that he has been having panic attacks and that Summer is the one who helped him through them. This is the ultimate act that shows he has changed and grown as a person when he recognizes the values that he actually considers important. In a certain game the group plays, which is some version of “Never Have I Ever,” it is revealed that Poppy has always liked Ari. In another scene, Poppy invites Ari home and takes the initiative to kiss him, and it looks like Ari responds, though he later decides that he would prefer to be friends with her. He also has a certain relationship with Poppy where they are good friends, but he is hurt that she did not visit him in the hospital, and Poppy is hurt because he did visit her when her mom died. He is definitely angry with his friends for not visiting him in the hospital, and that is the reason he does not visit Poppy when her mother passes away. When it comes to Bodhi, Ari is certainly glad when she and Marlon break up and pursue her, even getting her a gift, but is never quite able to confess to her due to some reason or the other. She cared enough to go to Bodhi’s house when she did not show up for the competition, and she also participated in the competition and won for the Shorehaven team. Be it the time she participated in the surfing competition for fun but only ended up ruining Bodhi’s chances with her carelessness, or the number of times her actions got Ari in trouble, or even when she takes out her anger on her mother at the group, saying she was only hanging out with them because there was literally no one else in the town and she did not enjoy it one bit, she learned from her mistakes. This is how most of Ari and Summer’s relationship goes, with Ari being the one too scared to deviate from the rules, and he appears to be someone who gives up at the first sign of trouble. While initially reluctant to stay there, she falls in love with the people and the place through a journey of self-discovery and responsibility.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Surviving Summer' On Netflix, Where Teens ... (Decider)

A skateboarding teen from Brooklyn manages to find herself on a surfing crew in a small coastal Australian town in this new family series.

Sleeper Star: Savannah La Rain is supposed to be this show’s warmth and heart as Bodhi, and she projects that from the first moments we see her. She already as a love-hate with the flinty Poppy, seems to connect with Marlon, and finds a rival from a competing surf crew. Our Take: Created by Josh Mapleston and Joanna Werner, Surviving Summer is like the other shows we mentioned above; it does a good job of setting up its main characters while not talking down to its core audience. There, Summer is a hit, but Ari is a wallflower, jealous that Bodhi is with Marlon. The Gist: As we see Ari Gibson (Kai Lewins) surf, we see his cousin, Summer Torres (Sky Katz) is in Brooklyn, skateboarding with her friends. Netflix has recently put out a string of good teen series, many of which are produced in Australia. One thing they have in common are a lot of action sequences, that show the country’s stunning scenery.

Surviving Summer isn't the first to feature an actual athlete from the sport a show or movie follows. Sky Katz stars as the titular character Summer Torres. Fans of That's So Raven may recognize the young actress from Raven's Home, the spin-off presently airing on Disney Channel. She portrays Tess, Raven's (Raven-Symone) daughter, and Nia's (Navia Robinson) best friend. Despite Summer's initial disdain for her situation, she seems to come to terms with her situation and make the best of it. We'll have to wait and see what happens when the series drops. Mapleston is also credited as a writer for the new series. Take a trip to Australia this summer without having to leave your home with a new Netflix series.
