Queen's absence strikes symbolic note as royals gather at jubilee ... (The Guardian)

Charles stands in for his mother at St Paul's Cathedral in ceremony that pays tribute to her seven-decade reign.

After the service, as the congregation filed down the steps of St Paul’s, they passed the spot marking another queen’s absence from her own service. Shortly after the service it was announced that the Queen would not attend the Epsom Derby on Saturday. Princess Anne is expected to go in her place. And we are all glad that there is still more to come. They arrived by car shortly after the long line of other assorted royals who earlier had disgorged from a coach to file into the cathedral. Instead the couple were seen returning to Frogmore Cottage, their Windsor home. The symbolism of a great state service of thanksgiving for an absent Queen was not lost beneath the imposing dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. All the more so as the country was paying tribute to her seven decades of public service as Britain’s now longest-reigning monarch.

Archbishop of York says monarch is 'still in the saddle and we are all glad there is still more to come'

Key workers, charity volunteers and members of the armed forces were invited in recognition of their contributions to public life. Others in attendance included cabinet ministers, the Labour leader, Keir Starmer, former prime ministers, and first ministers of the devolved governments. Drawing on the Queen’s well-documented love of horse racing, he told the congregation: “I don’t have any great tips for the Derby tomorrow, but since the scriptures describe life as a race set before us, let me observe that her long reign reflects the distance of Aintree more than the sprints of Epsom. Certainly, less dressage than most people imagine. The couple were greeted by huge cheers from the crowd outside as they walked, hand in hand, up the cathedral’s steps. But on Friday, members of her family were out in force. It was a service of thanksgiving for an absent Queen, a St Paul’s Cathedral celebration to mark the longest reign of any British monarch.

However, as the tension outside vanished, inside the palace, concerns turned to Diana's funeral. The British public seemed to be of a similar opinion. The British tabloid press were just as scathing: "Has the House of Windsor a heart?" "No-one who knew Diana will ever forget her. "At Balmoral, she hadn't taken it in. The Princess died a short time ago," he was told. At 6pm, the head of the Commonwealth spoke live to the nation, telling viewers that she would be speaking to them as both a Queen and a grandmother, "from the heart". Queen Elizabeth II — at the urging of those around her — cut short the family's stay at Balmoral and returned to the palace a day early. But in reality, according to Morton, the Queen had never hesitated in her decision to claim Diana's body and the story was false. As anger built on the streets of London, comparisons were drawn between the palace's indifference to Diana in her death and its treatment of her as a princess. Reports of what was unfolding in London soon made their way to the family in Scotland, where the Queen and Prince Charles were preoccupied with the vulnerable William and Harry. They loved her.

Queen Elizabeth was thanked for her years as head of state at a service to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, an event she missed due to her "mobility issues."

"While I am disappointed the queen is not here today, she deserves a day off," said Akachi Okoro, 45, who had traveled from Scotland. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has marked the renaming of Canberra's Aspen Island to honour Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee.

Australia's Governor-General David Hurley hosted a Zoom call with the Queen and the nation's 2022 Australian of the Year award recipients on 9 May as part of the commemorations. In a speech marking the Queen's 70 years on the throne on Thursday, the prime minister said Australians held her in respect and affection, even though the bond with Britain was not what it was when she assumed her title in February 1952. "Like Canberra itself, like this lake, this island, the Carillon was an act of imagination, a touchstone of both tradition and progress," Mr Albanese said on Saturday.
